To think today’s article about Auriol Grey paint a very different picture

I was sad to see articles today about the woman jailed for the death of a cyclist. At the time of the offence she was living in a home for the disabled. If this is the case my experience is places like that aren’t easily available.
Shes partially blind, has balance problems and cognitive difficulties after a birth injury to the brain. She’s had related brain surgery.
If this is the case, as her family’s appeal stated, then there does seem a disconnect with the judge saying no difficulties that impacted her actions. Accessing supported living yet being deemed able-bodied and cognitively normal by a court.
Obviously the incident was horrendous for the Ward family, and the cyclist need not deserve to die. It’s a sad case. However the handling of the case is starting to sound uncomfortable. What have others thought of the articles today?

Have you no human compassion at all?

Yes, lots of it. Reserved for David Ward who’s grieving his wife of decades, their children and grandchildren and the driver whose mental health has been destroyed, whose marriage has been ruined and whose kids have had their security taken away.

True compassion extends in more that one direction.

You'd be screaming "hang him high" at Derek Bentleys execution, wouldn't you? Shame you weren't around in 1953.

Shocking ableism here.

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2023 18:37

I was around in 1953. Capital punishment is abhorrent and I’d never support it. Grey’s got three years in prison. The families of the cyclist and the driver have got life sentences.

Tietheapron · 28/03/2023 18:37

That is completely crossing a line, @coldmarchmorn . @Blossomtoes is hardly in favour of the death penalty Hmm and Auriol Grey is responsible for this woman’s death in a way Bentley wasn’t for the police officers.

Carlotta367 · 28/03/2023 18:39

coldmarchmorn · 28/03/2023 18:26

It is not at all lovely, its absolutely hideous.

@coldmarchmorn so are you 🤷🏻‍♀️

coldmarchmorn · 28/03/2023 18:27

So do I. But if it was, I wouldn't turn into a monster out for blood.

Then you're cold blooded and that's not normal

The line was not crossed by me. The line was crossed by those who take no account of a persons multiple disabilities and are vicious in condemning her.

You don't know if AG has the capability to be responsible, every indication is that she is not, and I see direct parallels to the likes of Derek Bentley, who was treated the same way.

The difference is that its the 21st century and pp have no excuse for not knowing better and behaving better

I'm not the coldblooded one here. I'm not the one advocating for brain damaged, ill, cognitively affected , partially blind, disabled women to be locked up. Look in a mirror.

Tietheapron · 28/03/2023 18:42

So everyone who disagrees with you, including the judge and jury members, crossed a line did they?

Weird connection considering most people not supporting grey are saying it's wrong to kill people, you know like AG did

More than I ever did, anyway.

These threads make me sick.

That poster was name calling others and accusing the judge of bias yesterday, then refusing to give any justification for anything she was saying. You can claim a moral high ground all you want, doesn't actually make it so.

I'd just ignore her. Especially you, @Carlotta367, since you know the Ward family and so it'll be worse for you to give this total stranger any enerft. It's easy to project anything you like when you don't have any connection and you see the whole horrible thing as just something to feel superior over.

ReneBumsWombats · 28/03/2023 18:47

Enerft? Energy. Fuck you, autocorrect.

And you've got a great imagination.

The fact is you don't know any more than we do. We have gone on the findings of the case, the likely assumption that her defense might have just raised her vulnerability and the fact they had 2 years between trials to prep that as a defense and it didn't work.

ladybluesky · 28/03/2023 18:53

@Redebs bikes do belong on the pavement where it's a shared pavement, which the judge concluded this one was

Nobody in this thread, including you, can say with confidence that AG had the capacity to be responsible.

The court, however, had the benefit of relevant evidence and clearly she was deemed to have sufficient capacity.

The courts are obviously not infallible, hence appeals exist, and whether the sentence is appropriate will be reviewed.

You seem to be taking the view that nobody with any degree of brain injury can possibly have sufficient capacity to commit a crime which is, in itself, extremely ableist (even if born from sympathy).

What is (near) undeniable is that AG violently assaulted CR, in an act of aggression
that let to CR’s death.

If AG lacks capacity and needs to be somewhere other than prison, fine, but pending the appeal, I have more faith in the court’s assessment of her capacity than I do in the assessment of some random person on the internet that’s never met the woman or seen a shred of medical evidence.

The article also states that the pavement doesn’t meet the specified width for a shared pedestrian/ cycle path.

Guidance states 3m for shared paths mainly to ensure that two larger motorised mobility scooters/wheelchairs can pass each other with ease. The path was 2.4m. That is wider than most pavements and sufficient for a cyclist to pass a pedestrian, both of whom could see each other.

Freddie1964 · 28/03/2023 20:00

The pavement was not 2.4m at the point where they passed. The lamppost reduces it considerably. Also there is no buffer either side at all. 3m is a minimum. The pavement is simply too narrow to be used as a shared cycleway.

The lamppost does barely makes a difference.

Freddie1964 · 28/03/2023 20:08

The cyclist was startled and lost control of an unstable bicycle on a narrow path. She passed far too close to the pedestrian. She should not have been cycling at all but certainly should have stopped out of consideration and safety of the pedestrian. I really don't see what the pedestrian did wrong to be honest. Maybe shouting a simple "Stop" or ""Watch out" would have been better.

Freddie1964 · 28/03/2023 20:11

It does make quite a difference actually. It is also a hazard to the cyclist which is why she was cycling on the wrong side of the pavement. She didn't want to go near the lamp post.

If this was merely a case of the cyclist being startled (and it looks rather more like she was pushed), it was by AG violently swinging her arm at her.

Even if that was true, and unless you have access to a clairvoyant you seem to be making stuff up, it still would not justify AG assaulting CR.
