Is obesity the responsibility of the NHS?

I've read a few posts lately where posters say the NHS isn't doing enough to combat obesity. As far as I am aware people are taught from pre-school age upwards about healthy eating and the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. This continues through secondary school. I don't know about in further education but I don't remember any from my own FE days. We have access to NHS information online about healthy lifestyles, and the information is repeated in pregnancy and post-natal days by midwives and health visitors (that was my experience but I appreciate it might not be the same for others). We are given the information and it's up to us as individuals what we do with that information. The idea is we use it to prevent getting obese in the first place.

If people do get obese, through whatever factors, and there are many that contribute to this, is it up to the NHS to fix this or should the onus be on individuals? What happened in countries without an NHS style system?

Cancers are mainly preventable but the NHS provides treatment for those but then we can't fix cancers by ourselves, or heart disease, or strokes, but obesity is something we can treat ourselves. I'm not saying it's easy but it is possible. Of course obesity is linked to those diseases/conditions so it's not straightforward.

Is too little responsibility put on those who are obese?

I don't think it's straightforward and I think it's impossible to give treatment for some partially or completely self-inflicted conditions but not others. It's an ethical nightmare. What do other countries do?

Fabulous idea OP

Maybe we should shut down all the gum clinics and the abortion clinics?
as most stis and unwanted pregnancies are preventable aswell?….no? …oh 🤔

jokes aside

im classed as obese and trying to do something about it but my hormonal issues do make it a lot harder than people without it , without question not just the physical metabolic issues but it creates extreme lethargy so I can’t often function in the same way as other people so I’m less active
I did once go to the dr and asked for testing as thyroid issues run high in my dads side and I’ve every symptom going,
the dr refused and gave me a leaflet for slimming world,
I never went back,
imagine how much progress I may have made had that disgrace actually done his job
the medical negligence of obese patients is a huge issue nobody seems ready to talk about.

Ah nova nordisk had their fun in the country and popped off.

Yeah sure I’ll be telling an gynae and proving through weight loss records I lost 12lb in one week and hit with a fibroid, their domain to sort. Sorry not when I was fat with zero symptoms. Will have some fun with my weigh in books when they want to tell me obesity means everything to them.

How dare they fucking moan about obesity on one day and then tell the over 50s to deliver TAKEAWAYS on another

Yes this shows exactly what the Tories think of the general public, many people who have left the workforce have done so because his party allowed them to access their pension pot at 55.... what on earth did they expect?

Mel Stride wouldn't deliver Pizzas and given the state of the roads, likely as not an over 50 would end up in AE after hitting a pothole

I should think most adults are surely aware of what is and isn't healthy food, but they choose to what they want rather than what they should. Same goes for smoking/drinking too much, it would be very rare for an adult to have no idea of the implications.
