Washing

AIBU to ask how you all do your washing?

I see people on social media saying that they've done 5 loads of washing since they got back from holiday that morning.

HOW?

I can do one load per day max due to airer space and that's with a tumble dryer too so how do they do it? Do they not read the labels and shove everything in the tumble dryer?

Tips welcome!

In winter I can do 2-3 loads by drying on hangers, radiators and doing one tumble dry load of underwear and towels
in summer I have enough room to dry outside 3-4 loads

IglesiasPiggl · 25/03/2023 20:56

It also depends on the capacity of their machine
If it's only 5kg then it doesn't take much to fill one load.

chipswitheveryting · 25/03/2023 20:56

I can do three or four loads, I just hang on the washing line outside, radiators and airing rack. Sometimes on dining table chairs while we wait for other items to be drier.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 25/03/2023 20:56

Maybe they do tiny loads?

Probably a lot of drier use too.

I don’t have a drier and I’d be hard pushed to do five loads in one day even in the height of summer.

WooWooWinnie · 25/03/2023 20:57

We can do 3 loads a day easily but separating in to tumble dryer-able and not. So we do a wash that all goes in the drier, then another wash that is fully hung up. And then we can do another wash that can go in the drier/be hung up it any remaining space.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/03/2023 20:58

I mean this kindly, but for the love of god buy another laundry airer. Of course you can only dry one load if you have space for only one!

my life changed quite considerably when I got a few clothes horses, now I have 5 and it’s absolutely brilliant.

I'd love to buy more airers but live in a small 2 up 2 down house and just don't have the room.
I use the airer, hangers on doors, upstairs bannister and radiators and still couldn't do more than one load per day, a small second load if it was dryer only I guess.
Was hoping for some magic tip to dry clothes faster!

Dehumidifier and heated rack then

But honestly, if you have any spare space at all even in a wardrobe or cupboard or something then an extra airer would really be great!

pncr · 25/03/2023 21:31

I have a washing machine that does a 30 min quick wash.

I also use a 1hr wash.

I have a Sheila maid pulley and a big airer from IKEA and two wilko over door airers.

takealettermsjones · 25/03/2023 21:34

I can only really do three loads in a day, but my laundry policy is very much survival of the fittest and I never read the labels. Everything gets washed at 30 and then air dried or tumble dried depending on how quickly I need it done. If it falls apart it never had the gumption to live here anyway.

Curiosity101 · 25/03/2023 21:43

We have this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8500368

It holds almost 4 loads. We also aim to do at least 1 load of laundry a day whilst at home and always do laundry on holiday if we're away for more than a few days. So normally works fine.

We do tend to use the dryer for small clothes though. So baby/toddler, underwear etc normally gets dried straight away rather than hung to dry.

That's the ikea rack I have

Ripleysgameface · 25/03/2023 22:00

I've done 4 x 12kg loads (1 yesterday, 3 today. No tumble dryer but I do have a laundry room with dehumidifier. It'll all be dry and put away by tomorrow.

I have 2 x large airer and a clothes rail so plenty of room for everything.

The sheets and towels I often wash then take to the laundrette to dry, I do have one practically on my doorstep so it's easier.

Bloodyhellisthisit · 25/03/2023 22:22

If you have enough head height in the hall directly above your staircase then one of these will be a gamechanger

https://www.castinstyle.co.uk/product.php/285/traditional-kitchen-maid-pulley-clothes-airer?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt_qgBhDFARIsABcDjOfUYps1_9W6mZ0OuiW-RoKk9gmZPTgqhnD5SJrv0LposMyc8A9TNm4aAmesEALw_wcB

they are best over stairs as the air circulates and gets things dry. I can do two loads using alongside a tower airer, and you can put things on hangers through the cast iron ends (space for 8-10 hangers), as well as hanging sheets and towels etc from the slats themselves. Make sure it is put up really securely into the joists.

I also run a dehumidifier in the hall to help speed up the process (no tumble drier). Stuff I hung out yesterday was dry this afternoon (so then I had to do another two loads 🙄)

Tower airers (eg below) are amazing (and take up minimal storage when not in use)

I can easily do 5 loads in a day!

I separate everything.

There are 4 adults here. I change bedding 1-2 times a week. We have pet bedding. Go through tons of towels. Gym x 3 of us. Work uniform, Uni uniform, casual clothes.

Everything is lined dried.

All cold washed except linen, whites and pet stuff.

I have two airers and a drying rack in the bathroom. One airer is this type: Minky Extra Wing Indoor Airer with 24 m Drying Space, Metal, Silver amzn.eu/d/1DPIhRt and the other is this Minky 3 Tier Plus Clothes Airer amzn.eu/d/9y32ORf The first one easily takes 2 loads on its own
I love it a lot (yes i need to get out more). I also have 2 washing machines. We wound up with a second one when tenants moved out of the rental property we own, and the new tenants had their own white goods, so they didn't need the ones we supplied with the property. DH, very enterprising, plumbed it in next to our existing machine. With 2 dc and a dog, having 2 washing machines has been life changing. We also have two dishwashers for the same reason.

Anyway, I have enough drying space to dry 3-4 loads as a result, without resorting to the tumble dryer. During the week, I run the washing machines overnight, hang out in the morning, and usually fold it all the next morning. On a weekend, if it's built up, I do two sets of quick washes (so 4 washes) and get it all hung out Saturday morning. So it's quite quick, really.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/03/2023 22:51

Are you overloading your dryer? Do smaller batches and add a clean dry towel to each load you put in the dryer. It helps them to dry faster.

This is me too 😆
It goes in the dryer whether it likes it or not!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/03/2023 23:09

How long does it take you to dry a load in the tumble dryer? If using drier I can comfortable wash and dry two loads in a day, and have a third big load on the airer.

I've started doing an extra spin on most washes - definitely found that it helps them dry faster.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 25/03/2023 23:16

I use hangers to dry t shirts, shirts and jumpers, skirt hangers dry jeans and trousers too, socks and underwear on the circular hanging thing that you get in hardware shops or markets, all on the shower curtain rail and the ceiling dryer thing, airer and the radiator dryer things for towels etc.

I do have a de humidifier which I wouldn’t have believed it drys clothes quicker but it does.

turning stuff and changing the location off your drying does help too

Purplestorm83 · 25/03/2023 23:17

Omg that over door airer is amazing! Thanks for sharing
