Washing

AIBU to ask how you all do your washing?

I see people on social media saying that they've done 5 loads of washing since they got back from holiday that morning.

HOW?

I can do one load per day max due to airer space and that's with a tumble dryer too so how do they do it? Do they not read the labels and shove everything in the tumble dryer?

Tips welcome!

No way. Life is too short. We're a family of four with a lot of clothes. I do one wash every other day and rarely use the dryer.

Our laundry basket is always almost full, but no one ever runs out of anything and our bills are kept low.

AaBbC · 26/03/2023 00:09

I could do 5 loads a day if I really wanted to - but I don't lol

  • I have a tumble dryer (1 load)
  • over door airer ( 1 load)
  • a rotary washing line (2 loads)
  • a line from the back door the length of our garden attached to the garage (2 loads maybe 3)

When it's cold I just throw everything in the tumble dryer - except jeans lol

PinkButtercups · 26/03/2023 00:13

I have 2 airers and no tumble drier.

I can do 2-3 loads a day.

There are 5 of us. 2 adults, 1 toddler and 3m old twins.

My bigger airer dries clothes a lot quicker and holds a lot more clothes. The clothes hang better on it too it's one of those big 4 armed type ones. Not sure what it's called.

My washing machine is 9kg but I don't always do a 9kg load! If I do whites etc it's always a smaller wash. Also, I put the machine on an extra spin once the cycle has finished. That helps clothes/bedding etc dry a lot quicker. Where my airer is too the window is always on a latch there too.

I've got a fabulous wall dryer in one bathroom, takes a full load, concertinas out from the wall. Then I have a wooden clothes horse in the kitchen and one other in the spare bedroom. That's 3 loads, but takes 2 days to dry (I'm refusing to put my CH on or it would be quicker).

Lcb123 · 26/03/2023 09:08

I could do 2 loads a day, I have 3 laundry racks. Never has tumble dryer

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 26/03/2023 09:11

Did three loads yesterday as it was a great drying day; obsessed with drying clothes outside 😂
normally finish them off with 20 mins in dryer (one load as not everything will need it.

Lovingitallnow · 26/03/2023 09:12

Strategic holiday washing. So I'll sort everything. First wash on air dryer is sports/swimming stuff. Second wash on second air dryer is regular lights. Third wash is tumble dryer darks, fourth is tumble dryer lights and fifth is regular darks- goes out by the time the sports/swimming stuff is dry. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Dehumidifier helps

PurBal · 26/03/2023 09:14

We tend to do 2 loads in winter and 4 in summer. 6kg machine (I want a bigger one tbh). Ability to dry stuff is the biggest factor. We have 2 clothes airers, a ceiling airer (sure it’s got a name), a couple of over radiator airers, an airing cupboard and a clothes line that fits about 1.5 loads. Don’t use the tumble dryer (but don’t want to get rid of it in case there’s an emergency). Use a 2 hour wash. If I plan properly I put the first load in at night and use the delay function so the first load is ready when we get up. So say that’s about 7, next load is finished by 930, next load by 12, next load by 230. In the height of summer the loads have dried by the time the next one comes out. Even last week most stuff was dry in 2 hours outside due to wind and sun. The delay function has made a huge difference.

megletthesecond · 26/03/2023 09:15

I did five full loads yesterday (it had been a horrible busy rainy week). All dried on the washing line. I'm in Hampshire.
I use the tumble dryer a couple of times a year. I check the weather forecast and plan washing accordingly.

Emigratingimmigrant · 26/03/2023 09:18

I am quite shocked at how many loads some people do on here.
We were family of 4 and had 4 loads a week. White, dark, colour and towels or sheets and bits. All done one morning and hanged

Skyeheather · 26/03/2023 09:19

In the summer I can fit two loads on my washing line outside, if I was desperate I could wash a third load and hang it inside the house.

In winter I do one load every other day as I only have room in the house to hang one load at a time and it usually takes over a day to dry.

Franticbutterfly · 26/03/2023 09:33

I do lots on a weekend. I use a heated airer, and airer radiators and for all the stuff that can be tumble dried, the dryer.

I do quick washes on 60c which takes and hour, or 40c wash that takes 1hr 20m. I wash clothes on 90c for 1hr 30m.

PurBal · 26/03/2023 09:43

Based on a comment from a PP. I should have said a max of. And we don’t do laundry everyday.

takealettermsjones · 25/03/2023 21:34

I can only really do three loads in a day, but my laundry policy is very much survival of the fittest and I never read the labels. Everything gets washed at 30 and then air dried or tumble dried depending on how quickly I need it done. If it falls apart it never had the gumption to live here anyway.

Same here. I literally look at nice frilly white tops in the shop and think "yeah I'd like that, but it wouldn't survive the wash"

But also, 4/5 loads A DAY?! I need to write myself a note to never have more kids or men in my life! There's me and toddler DS. I do 1/2 washes a week. Fuck washing daily!

I always do a wash on holiday now. Going home with clean washing is my favourite bit, I used to hate that mountain of washing that came home.

Emigratingimmigrant · 26/03/2023 09:55

Ha, yes to shopping with "but the washing" thoughts.

AlwaysLatte · 26/03/2023 09:57

I sometimes do multiple loads. If bad weather I'll use the dryer for some things and hang the rest on the sheila maid in the laundry room. If I get a bad backlog and the weather's bad I'll put some on an airer in the spare room with the radiator on for an hour or so and it dries by the end of the day, usually.

AlwaysLatte · 26/03/2023 10:02

It depends a lot though - ours are teens and all the bedding is double or king sized, towels take two loads on their own a week. We have a big dog who goes swimming every day so there's his towels (we use a bag to wash them in, separately of course) and we get muddy on those walks so extras there. Uniform, kids hobbies clothes, lots of gym clothes and normal clothes - our teens are in adult sized clothing now.

megletthesecond · 26/03/2023 10:07

It's easy to do two loads every day with teenagers, gym kit, PE kits, work clothes etc. One you add in a change of towels and bedding once a week it's never ending.

BertieBotts · 26/03/2023 10:09

I put everything in the tumble dryer. There are about 5 things I don't put in it. It's a heat pump so runs cooler than old ones anyway and things seem to survive.

The tumble dryer changed my life honestly.

mumonherphone · 26/03/2023 10:10

I only do one load per day, about 4 days a week. We only have the room for one machine so have a washer/dryer combo machine. I could take the washing out, hang it on the airer and then load the machine again but most of the time I just switch the setting on to dry and get on with my day.

pncr · 26/03/2023 10:13

I do a lot when the kids are home from uni. Especially when they're on a reading week and come home with limited clothes. And I'm washing gym kit and drying it overnight.

Also all my beds are double or kingsize. And I sleep with a dog every night so I do my bed every single week.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 26/03/2023 10:14

We have a washer dryer that can wash and dry a load of laundry in two hours.

Goes in the wash on 30 or 40 and at 20 mins or 60 mins then on the line or in the drier. Repeat.
