Sold an item on Marketplace, but wrong. Should I tell the buyer?

I sold a ladder on Facebook market place. Cost £100, sold for £60. It's not as tall as I thought it was. Should I contact the buyer and offer a discount?

You do need to contact them and tell them the height error. They may need it to be a certain height & would be annoyed to arrive to collect it to be told it’s shorter.
It doesn’t necessarily need discounting, see what they say.

Hankunamatata · 25/03/2023 11:15

Just message them and tell them you got the measurements wrong. Are they still interested.

lanthanum · 25/03/2023 11:16

If they haven't collected, contact them, explain, ask if they still want it. Re-advertise it if not.
If they have collected, then "sold as seen" - but if they contact you saying it's shorter than you said, then obviously you apologise and come to some agreement - money off or collect it and give them the money back.

Reddickyouless · 25/03/2023 11:18

Sorry but I'm laughing 😃, yes, it may be worth mentioning that they've bought something they may not want

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/03/2023 11:19

Yes, I would.

failedbluecup · 25/03/2023 11:32

Sorry to not be clear.... they've already bought it!

They’ve already collected it? Then leave it.

Jibo · 25/03/2023 12:47

How much was your measurement out by? I wouldn't contact them but I'd offer a refund if they complain.

30cm I think. Ladder is 90cm tall when folded and has four sections. However when in use it's 3.16.

This. No need to offer a discount at all.

AppallinglyReheated · 25/03/2023 17:08

If they've collected it and handed over money on collection or inspected it before taking it away even if they paid in advance... do nothing.

It's their job to check that what they're buying is correct, they've had the opportunity to do that and if they failed to bring a measuring tape, thats on them.

It is different if you misdescribe something that the buyer has no chance to check prior to collection/delivery, which is why we have distance selling rules that are different to in person.

Sassyfox · 25/03/2023 17:38

I would definitely message them and explain that you got it wrong and if they’d like to return it you’ll refund their money.

I wouldn’t offer a discount.

Chances are they won’t care now they’ve got it.

I’m confused as to how you realised this after they had collected the item.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 25/03/2023 17:41

A 90cm ladder? I don't think so. That's very small

Daisybee6 · 25/03/2023 17:45

I would just leave it and if he comes back to you in a couple of days to say its not right, just apologise and offer to refund him if he returns it

It's a folding ladder. It's 90cm when folded.

Ok so the ladder is 90cm when folded. It's got four parts..... so you would assume 90x4 but the middle runs must be shorter?

OP posts:
GoodChat · 25/03/2023 18:39

Of course it's not 4x the folded height. Just message them with the correct measurements.

Why do you think I'm dumb?

It's only the horizontal bar that's made it longer

I agree with this.

Mañanarama · 26/03/2023 00:43

So you advertised it as 360cm but it’s only 316cm? Unless you’ve sold it to a roofer or window cleaner, they’re unlikely to need to go higher than 3 metres or even notice. I’d do nothing, but act surprised and apologetic if they contact you and offer to collect it or part refund them a tenner if they’re unhappy.

Or, delete your advert and hope they didn’t screenshot it!

GoodChat · 26/03/2023 06:58

@failedbluecup I haven't suggested that you're 'dumb'... but you did sell a ladder with the wrong measurements...

Have you contacted them?

Still not clear.

Do they have the ladder in their possession?

If ever an illustration was needed that the ability to manage the simplest of issues is disappearing this is it

Why do you need to ask the internet about a non problem where the solution is perfectly cbvious. It would have taken you 30 seconds to type a sorry mate I made a mistake message yet you drag this out over hours and dont even explain it cleqrly
