To start shooting crows on my roof...

Meggymoo777 · 25/03/2023 09:29

Okay, losing my god damn mind... The avenue into my house is flanked either side with groves of trees. The trees are not mine, it's a shared avenue. The trees are home to a huge number of crows, rooks, pigeons... not quite sure but they're all big and dark. It's like something out of a Hitchcock movie in the evenings when they come home to roost.

My problem is the mornings. During the week it doesn't bother me but I love to sleep in at the weekend. I've been awake since 6.45am with them dancing about on my roof. They're such big birds that they make such a racket between jumping, their claws scratching and the squawking. From here to the end of Summer this will happen every morning.

Outside of shooting the bastards (which I can't and obviously wouldn't do) is there ANYTHING at all I can do? I've been slamming the bedroom window but they just come back 15mins later. I'm actually really upset this morning as it's been a tough week and all I wanted was a little extra sleep.

Earplugs?

CanIAskAnotherStupidQuestion · 25/03/2023 09:31

Get a pet hawk

buckleten · 25/03/2023 09:32

A fake owl or hawk on your roof might deter them a bit

Raineth · 25/03/2023 09:33

Soundproofing and earplugs? Move bedroom to anlower floor?

Sorry no better suggestions, sounds shit ☹️

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/03/2023 09:33

One of those things that looks like a bird of prey but is actually a kite attached to a bendy pole. (Our local car show room uses one to keep the seagulls away from the forecourt).

Custardbanana · 25/03/2023 09:34

Hire falconry pest control.

watcherintherye · 25/03/2023 09:35

Bird spikes on your roof? This is a thing, and doesn’t harm the birds, as it just deters them from landing.

There members of the Corvid family. So treat them well and they will reward you, actually very intelligent.

They need some where to live and to be had nest we have destroyed all the places they call home, so you need to get on 😂

Beware if you treat them bad though, they will recognise you and will act accordingly I have seen it on my farm many occasions.

Interest read for you here, they have the ability to recognise individual human faced and remember how they are treated

So ear plugs 😂

Ravens Hold Grudges Against People Who Cheat Them

The canny corvids remember people who give them unfair deals, scientists have discovered.

Hellocatshome · 25/03/2023 09:36

My DGran used to hoot them with a water pistol. Didnt hurt them but pissed them off, eventually they stopped coming back.

Hellocatshome · 25/03/2023 09:36

Shoot obviously

Greentree1 · 25/03/2023 09:40

We used to suffer with pigeons crashing about on the roof, but kites have now moved in so the pigeons don't like to be in the open, peace at last. A mock kite might have the desired effect.

Meggymoo777 · 25/03/2023 09:40

Thank you all so much for your rational responses... I'm my blind rage this morning the only things I thought of were the spikes (which I figured was too much as have a large roof and could hurt them) and one of those banger things farmers use which would wake me anyway.

Can't sleep downstairs unless I sleep on the sofa every night, I'm always afraid to wear ear plugs in case I don't hear my son or someone breaking in.

A bird of prey statue or similar is a great suggestion. Don't know how I'll get it on my 2nd storey roof but I'll figure it out. The one with the bendy pile sounds great @MrsMoastyToasty, thank you x

Is there actually such a thing as Falcony Pest Control @Custardbanana???

Shoot obviously

You cannot do this, you would have to apply for a General Licence which would now most likely be a GL42 and only under certain circumstances otherwise it's a legal offence.

Haha! The Twits right? Maybe I will just glue all the branches so when they come home to roost they're just stuck there 🙈😅

er….put a scarecrow on your roof?

I'm glad someone else can attest to how bloody annoying it is and it's not just me losing my mind!!! I'm gonna start looking into the Kite on a bendy pole thing and get one up asap x

I was correcting my post above where I said my Gran used to hoot them with a water pistol. Pretty sure you don't need a licence for that.

There very intelligent, scarecrows and kits will only work for a few days. Better just sell up and move house OP.

Neighbour did this to get rid of the bastard seagulls around here. Pretty much 10 minutes after he put it up on the roof, the seagulls were back up there sat next to it, looking pretty unimpressed with his effort.

It didn't get rid of the other birds either.
