To start shooting crows on my roof...

Okay, losing my god damn mind... The avenue into my house is flanked either side with groves of trees. The trees are not mine, it's a shared avenue. The trees are home to a huge number of crows, rooks, pigeons... not quite sure but they're all big and dark. It's like something out of a Hitchcock movie in the evenings when they come home to roost.

My problem is the mornings. During the week it doesn't bother me but I love to sleep in at the weekend. I've been awake since 6.45am with them dancing about on my roof. They're such big birds that they make such a racket between jumping, their claws scratching and the squawking. From here to the end of Summer this will happen every morning.

Outside of shooting the bastards (which I can't and obviously wouldn't do) is there ANYTHING at all I can do? I've been slamming the bedroom window but they just come back 15mins later. I'm actually really upset this morning as it's been a tough week and all I wanted was a little extra sleep.

Yes, now have something that spins around on the roof and it seems to have stopped as many going up there. I guess it's only useful when there is a breeze.

Is funny watching it when we have high winds, it certainly spins around then. Just waiting for the place to take off!! 😁

Are they actually crows ? More likely to be Jackdaws.
But anyway. Getting annoyed makes sleep less likely. When my dd was waking multiple times a night (she took years to sleep through), my irritation at being woken was the main thing that stopped me getting back to sleep.
So rather than spending time being annoyed by birds being birds, maybe spend time trying to reframe it and liking the birds and the noise of them. I have Jackdaws on my roof in the mornings, above teenage dds room. She loves them so they don’t bother her.
All Corvids are incredibly intelligent and interesting, maybe read a book about them ? Start to think of yourself as lucky to have these beautiful birds in your trees. If they are Jackdaws or Rooks, they make a lot of noise talking to each other at roosting time, and they are in their breeding season now so they are noisier generally. They mate for life and talk to their mates and extended family.
Otherwise earplugs are probably the best option. You could perhaps put a feeder in your garden so that they congregate there rather than on your roof ?

@HelpMeGetThrough you wouldn't have a link to something similar would you?

My son has just come across an ultrasonic bird repellant apparently... he's gonna send me a link. Poor child is listening to me crash about cleaning like an antichrist

the only things I thought of were the spikes (which I figured was too much as have a large roof and could hurt them)

From what I’ve read, they don’t hurt the birds, as they never come into contact with the spikes. They just avoid them. Could you just have them on the roof area over your bedroom?

I get what you're saying m, I really do but I'm so mad right now that I can't even consider that. Maybe when I calm down I'll look at your suggestion in a more positive frame of mind.

I actually love birds, have all manner in my garden and have bought feeders and even a bird spotting book and binoculars. Unfortunately whatever the big black ones are (think they could be a mix of different kinds) are a pain... they steal all the food and scare away the little ones. But I put up with that, that's just birds being birds. Love hearing them come home in the evenings as well. The only issue is the weekend mornings. Now my son is older it's so nice to be able to finally get some rest at the weekends.

Maybe this might work actually, my son says he doesn't hear them at the back of the house so maybe just my bedroom but would work

Crows, jackdaws and rooks are not going to take much notice of a fake bird of prey. Where I live, they actively seek out buzzards and kites, just to wind them up 😄

Earplugs are the answer here....

Meggymoo777 · 25/03/2023 10:12

Thank you so much @HelpMeGetThrough... that might do the trick

They're such smart little dickheads @PureGrit. (Haven't used as many expletives in so long!)

I'm a bit concerned about ear plugs for reasons mentioned above.

My son just sent me this, anyone think this might work? https://www.amazon.co.uk/ElectroDH-Repeller-Portable-frequency-Imperceptible/dp/B00R0SE916/ref=ascdff_B00R0SE916?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=265252967722&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1729109570273440903&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=20483&hvtargid=pla-439805477201&psc=1&th=1&psc=1&dplnkId=13b6ef21-7a47-4488-aae4-7c04180b4b1e&nodl=1

Wild animal aren't there for your convenience. Move house. Birds on the weekend. FFS.

This ^
Makes me sad to threads like this. I have loads of bird feeders in my garden.
Such intelligence - the Crows I mean obvs.

borntobequiet · 25/03/2023 10:22

I get this with jackdaws, they also come down the chimney (very old house).
It’s annoying but they’re such intelligent an entertaining birds, I just live with it.

Rats are also wild animals... if they were to infest my house should I just move out and leave them to it as well??? What a stupid response

We have the same but with seagulls. It honestly sounds like there is a human jumping above my head some mornings, they are so big here. Perils of living in a picturesque seaside town where they have become a menace due to all the easy pickings from tourists' leftover fish and chips.

It bothered me at first but I have adapted and manage to block it out ok, late spring early summer is worst when they are breeding/having young. I do have to close the window after dawn each morning.

I love the idea of these roof devices but we are top of a tall apartment block (hence the seagulls fave vantage point) so I wouldn't dare try to access the roof.

I tell myself it's worth it for the view!

My cats have never caught crows, wood pigeons yes, other birds yes.

Guess a crow is too much for cats.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/03/2023 10:39

My neighbour has for wood pigeons nesting in their eaves. 5am like clockwork they start and they are so fucking loud. Then they stop at 6am and presumably have a nice little nap after waking out house up for the day.

I feel your pain.

Yes they mob the buzzards and Red Kites here to steal anything they catch.

Bloody cats will do nothing, they just kill the little sweet birds.

I don't enjoy their company one bit!
