Why don't the police care?

I have a very, very unpleasant neighbour. If I told you all about his unpleasantness I'd be here all day.

However, one of the biggest issues is his drink driving and the fact he is driving around in an uninsured, untaxed vehicle with no MOT.

I've reported him to the police and the DVLA but nothing has happened. He's still driving around pissed and still has no insurance, tax etc. It's only a matter of time before he has an accident - although looking a the state of his car he already has. He drives his wife and kids around in his car...why isn't his wife bothered?

How is it that people like this get away with it?

I get the frustration, I really do. I think persistence is key. Report it every single time it happens.

Crazykatie · 23/03/2023 11:51

Even keeping a vehicle on a public road without tax is illegal they could seize the car for that alone
There are thousand of cars being used untaxed probably many on this site do just that!.

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 23/03/2023 11:53

Keep reporting. As mentioned they need to catch him in the act but they can only do that if they have someone in the area and available at the time. Police numbers are low due to cuts so it's not like they're sat in the station waiting for something to do. They also have no way of knowing where he's going which also makes it difficult.

I recently reported a driver who was either drunk or having a medical episode or who knows what (assumed drunk as they also had a passenger). As I was driving behind them for some time they did managed to get a local unit to where we were with me giving location updates. I was quire impressed given it was the middle of nowhere

filingpapers · 23/03/2023 11:54

If he has no MOT or road tax his insurance will be invalid anyway so no need to check if he has any or not.

That's down to the DVLA and can be reported online. I regularly see cars that have been clamped by the DVLA including at the supermarket.

TearsforBeers · 23/03/2023 11:55

I completely understand how the police are under resourced and that the drink driving issue is tricky as they need to actually catch him driving drunk.

The insurance/tax issue is more straightforward through surely?

I’m in my 50’s never had any ‘bad’ dealings with the police professionally in cjs and personally and normally first to defend them.
However
McPherson report
Living in south london and witnessing first hand so many heavy handed/ unfair stop and search
’Wake of Sarah Everard’ revelations about WhatsApp groups, “canteen culture lol the rapist” Charring Cross
Cressida Dick

I can’t defend them anymore. And yes- masons/ informants/ corruption/ incompetence would be my assumption now.

It was amazing how they genuinely did police by consent. They’ve blown it now.

Tell your neighbour to write something mean on twitter....the police will be round like a shot

They don’t care either

Try your MP.
It’s very worrying.

TenTwentyAtCheltenhamSandwich · 23/03/2023 12:01

One of my neighbours drinks & drives. I did once ask him if he should be driving if he’d had a drink. He said he was only going round the corner 🤔

That made me laugh as much as it also depressed me.

Well it could be that the DVLA haven't been in your area recently. They seem to do them every few months in our area, but once again it comes down to the vehicle being seen.
When they do our area there's usually about 10 cars in the supermarket car park that get clamped at a time.

Good shout.
I might do that.
DH is friends with our local councillor too......might get him to have a word

There was a post on here recently about a guy driving his camper van with out tax, mot and prob insurance and the majority on here said ‘leave him alone’, people are so two faced on here… your neighbour is prob committing benefit fraud as well, but that’s another thing on here people think you shouldn’t report. I think that most people on this site are doing exactly the same regarding both these unlawful things so that is why they think it’s ok.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 23/03/2023 12:07

And, come to think of it aren’t there some elected Police Commissioners. Try to contact yours if you have one.

Why don’t you copy cc the letter to the local councillor and or mp - pointing out that you have reported it several times. Or inform the police you wil be ccing it.

Coldilox · 23/03/2023 12:24

EternalSunshine19 · 23/03/2023 11:30

The police don't care. They're too busy raping women.

While I fully understand the concerns raised by the Casey report, as both a police officer and a victim of rape I find this really hurtful and also very triggering.

Yes of course massive reform needs to happen. Some of us are living this shit daily. But it doesn’t give you the right to call me a sex offender.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/03/2023 12:27

Is he taking the kids in the car drunk?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/03/2023 12:27

Is he taking the kids in the car drunk?

Possibly. The times I've reported him for being visibly drunk he was alone in the car....popped out for more drink apparently!

However, he is a heavy drinker and drinks every night so will probably be still over the limit in the morning. TBH she does most of the ferrying about for the kids though.

He's definitely driving them around in an uninsured car which has no MOT

smashinggrapes · 23/03/2023 12:47

Tell their school. Someone was doing this at our school and the headteacher had the police waiting "doing spot checks" on the terrible parking that happens around most schools.

They were there for the drink driving dad in his shitty car really though.
