AIBU to block in school mums parking on my driveway?

i live down the road from a school and during the school rush parents park everywhere it normally worse in the afternoon at 3pm

I work from home and usually park in the visitor pay outside my house so my partner can park on the driveway he gets home 3.30-4pm

however recently people have been parking on my driveway last week I caught someone pulling in knocked on their window and they argued with me saying they need to pick up their child eventually they did move but moved to where they were just half way blocking my drive way and halfway blocking my neighbor so no one could access it!

I didn’t bother confront them again but in future I’m just thinking to block them in… is that too petty

I have reported it to the school but all they’ve said is they’ve already asked parents not to block residents in so I’m not sure what else to do.

(if I did block anyone in it would only be for 30 minutes to cause a bit of stress and a lesson learned)

Because a lot of people don’t have a choice

fitzwilliamdarcy · 24/03/2023 16:56

50% of car journeys are under 2 miles, 25% under 1 mile. I know on MN every single person’s car use is absolutely unavoidable but in the real world far too many people are using cars just because they prefer to.

I do accept that Japan has much better public transport than we do but I still think we’re an inherently much more selfish nation.

I'd quite like to see a system like they have in some areas of Japan, where in order to purchase a car you have to prove you have somewhere off-road to park it - either on your own drive or in a designated spot in a car park if you don't have a drive.

That's OK in principle, but I live in an terrace with no parking. I need my car to get to work. What do I do? Give up my job because I can't afford a driveway? I can't afford to move (and don't want to anyway) so that system wouldn't work for many people.

Hence the "designated spot in a car park".

to breathe in fumes and put up with dangerous traffic you mean?

No, we don't

@adriftinadenofvipers

So, you're going to waste time and fuel to annoy a random person on the internet?

Right.

Yes...

A good days work for your campaigning!

Going to go sit in the car, stick my music on and leave the engine running, it gets me out of the house.

I NEED a car, but I don't need to use it today, but you my friend, have entered me into to 'The Petty olympics' on your behalf... I might even book a few long haul flights too (whilst eating hamburgers and wearing fast fashion too)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/03/2023 17:02

QuertyGirl · 24/03/2023 16:53

Why did you rent/buy a house with no parking??

I genuinely don't understand that one!

We couldn't afford it. We had to stay in this area but anywhere with a driveway was out of our budget.

Surely you realise not everyone can afford the idea property - I genuinely don't understand why I have to explain that to you 🙄

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/03/2023 17:04

Lockheart · 24/03/2023 16:56

Hence the "designated spot in a car park".

In which case our stupid council need to build some car parks rather than closing them! There's nothing like that unless you go into town and even then there's not enough parking.

QuertyGirl · 24/03/2023 17:05

@Udafqisalice

Hey, waste your money if you want.

Call it the dafty tax Grin

QuertyGirl · 24/03/2023 17:07

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

So it doesn't even have a back yard?

Anyway, your personal circumstances are none of my business.

What we need is pressure from above to change these situations;

Public transport, cycle lanes, fewer working hours and more working from home:

We're working and driving ourselves to death, for what?!

MrNook · 24/03/2023 17:11

but what if the parent has an appointment somewhere and they can't get to it?

What if the OP has an appointment somewhere that she can't get to because some selfish person has blocked her in on her OWN driveway?

adriftinadenofvipers · 24/03/2023 17:13

Udafqisalice · 24/03/2023 16:51

QuertyGirl, you honestly make me want to just sit in my car with the engine running for no reason...

I might even upgrade to an SUV

Same here!!!

We could arrange a Querty half hour - MN users all over doing the same 😉- bit of a waste of fuel though and not good for the battery...

@QuertyGirl"They could just, not drive it until the tyre is reinflated?" - now that is actual genius at work.

I doubt very much a tyre damaged in that way could be "reinflated". It would probably need to be replaced. So what an excellent idea - the car owner could leave it sitting in the OP's drive until payday so they could afford a new one....

I have a back and front garden, neither of which I can park on if that's what you're getting at.

To be honest, I don't particularly want to cycle to work. Neither route I can take is safe but I don't want to get to work all hot and sweaty thanks, and neither do I want to work from home full time. It's taken me nearly 3 years to adjust to having my office in my living room but as much as I love DH and the cat, I need to see other people.

@adriftinadenofvipers @Udafqisalice

You do know that one of the worst places to be for car fumes, is in an idling car?

It's your lungs, your money and your good relations with your neighbours yer pissin up the wall, but crack on!

Definitely the dafty tax

QuertyGirl · 24/03/2023 17:31

Car brain is definitely real.

Honestly, some of you could reasonably bring a personal injury case against car manufacturers for what they've done to you mentally.

What does that even mean? 2 miles takes half an hour to walk on a good day, for a fit person. Does everyone have spare hours for return journeys all the time? I might have to do a runaround with my car, all in all driving 3-4 miles, with a car it'll take 30-40 minutes and on foot almost two hours.

What if it's raining? Cars are a marvelous invention and it's stupid not to use them.

mental issues coming from you and your comments 😂😂

someone who is spreading information about damaging tyres and potentially causing fatalities.

have you glued yourself to the M25 yet?

Methinks there's only one dafty here - clue, starts with Q... 😆

Didn't you clock the 😉??? Would love to piddle you off though...

Cerealkillerontheloose · 24/03/2023 17:41

At our old school this lady had her mum living with her and she suddenly got sick. They’d tried to call an ambulance but it’s had got stuck somewhere and they said if she could to get her in the car. When they went outside they were found to be blocked in.

the dads got together to try and lift the car physically. I tried to get the woman to come back to her car quick and she literally didn’t give a shit. The husband nearly had a punch up and it was horrific. The school said they’d be having serious words if anyone did that again

so yes. Block them in!!!

Contact the community wardens and ask them to show a presence at the time schools close due to this on going issue. My boys primary school got the wardens involved, where people will illegally park / drive is mind boggling, who serious thinks its OK to park in someone else's drive? Speak about entitled 🙄

Mumof3girlygirls · 24/03/2023 17:46

I wouldn't even have thought twice about it I would have done it already!!! Cheek of some 😡

Scotslass171 · 24/03/2023 17:46

Can't you put in a fence and gate across driveway and keep it locked and only you and your partner have the keys?

redskylight · 24/03/2023 17:46

youshouldnthaveasked · 24/03/2023 16:35

I mean, I can think of thousands of other reasons to use a car that are not work commuting and dentist visits twice a year.

Owning a car is not entitled, whether one wfh or not. My Dad has retired, should he give up his car?

during work hours ? Unless OP's job requires her to drive, she will be sat at home working while she is wfh and not going anywhere in the car. And as her partner gets home at 3.30pm, there is a car available after work.

Unless all the threads on MN where people wfh make a point of saying that they genuinely use the time for working, and normally work hours than they would in the office are actually total rubbish and people spend their wfh hours going here there and everywhere?

Bogeyes · 24/03/2023 17:49

Block them in without a second thought. Then when they knock open the door with a glass of wine in your hand...too bad...I've had a drink.

thetimehascomesaidthewalrus · 24/03/2023 17:54

Hell yeah
