i live down the road from a school and during the school rush parents park everywhere it normally worse in the afternoon at 3pm

I work from home and usually park in the visitor pay outside my house so my partner can park on the driveway he gets home 3.30-4pm

however recently people have been parking on my driveway last week I caught someone pulling in knocked on their window and they argued with me saying they need to pick up their child eventually they did move but moved to where they were just half way blocking my drive way and halfway blocking my neighbor so no one could access it!

I didn’t bother confront them again but in future I’m just thinking to block them in… is that too petty

I have reported it to the school but all they’ve said is they’ve already asked parents not to block residents in so I’m not sure what else to do.

(if I did block anyone in it would only be for 30 minutes to cause a bit of stress and a lesson learned)

Block and then go on holiday for a couple of weeks

@Tdcp

Yet you expect everyone else to put up with consequences of the way you have ordered your life?

Ie, traffic, pollution, accidents and less space for kids to walk or cycle or play out.

Lol okay.

Killingmytime · 23/03/2023 13:47

block them in all day.

The visitors space isn't there for random parents at a local school though. They don't have a right to park there.

Visitors spaces are public spaces!

Not necessarily. Visitors spaces can be for residents and their visitors only. Depending on where the OP lives, the spaces could be controlled via deeds (spaces owned by individual houses but shared via the deeds) or controlled by permits.

Iluvfriends · 23/03/2023 13:49

I think I would have a word first. No second chances, if it happened again i would block them in.

Primary school 5 mins walk away from me and lots of parents that stay round about me jump in the car every day to go pick their kids up.
Passing the school is a nightmare from 45 mins before schools out, allparked upboth sides of the road leaving room for one car to pass at a time. Parked on corners and fully up on pavements, all 4 wheels. All so they can park as close to the school as possible.

Selfish entitled lazy people that don't give a damn about anyone else.

There have been some ridiculous comments on here.
Do some MNs really think that we can all work, live and find schools within walking distance.
I gave up my london job as an architect because I couldn’t find childcare, my office stated at 9am and school started at 8:30. We moved because we couldn’t afford anything in London. My travel by train alone was nearly an hour, before the tube and before I got to my local station. So I looked for a ‘local’ job. No architects practices near me, if someone suggests I should just change my profession after 7years of studying and 5 of those in full time University then they are being insensitive.

A friend whose a doctor specialising in heart ops had the same issue so became a gp, what a waste.

So no
We can’t all live the lives some can, because our circumstances are not the same.

That is why we need more before and after school childcare provision. So we can all walk to the schools then walk to the train to work.

iaapap · 23/03/2023 13:51

I would put a sign up before getting into confrontations with this type of person. A proper sign that’s clearly visible saying something like Please do not block or park on my driveway

it shouldn’t be necessary but it may be better than a confrontation

the type of person who will just park on your drive is an asshole - not a reasonable person who has done something accidentally

that said, this is an obvious problem and the school or council ought to realise that with several hundred kids needing picking up every day, there is a need for parking arrangements/facilities.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 23/03/2023 13:52

Have any posters justified the actions of parking on other people’s drives yet? I love it when they crop up.

100% block them in. Loads of parents do this at my kids school it's awful

It's exactly the same at my kids school too, the school are always informing the parents how they get loads of complaints, parents park over peoples drives, or on the double lines outside the school too because it seems like they actually cant be bothered to walk into school. People so easily say " so where can I park to pick up my child/ren" but their is plenty of us who get to school and park in an appropriate place not on double lines or over peoples drives or park 5 mins away by the park and walk a little bit to school which is good for the kids too. It frustrates me so much that these people think they are entitled to park where ever they want when alot of us park a little walk away from the school or actually find a proper parking space.
It frustrates me alot so can't imagine how it must feel for the neighbours of the school it must be awful because parents just don't listen and neighbours and teachers just get shouted at and verbally abused when asking people to move and tell them they shouldn't be parking on double lines/ over peoples drives, it's just awful.

I used to live near a school, and once on a mid week day off, came home at pick up time. Whilst in the slow traffic queue, I was gobsmacked to see a car (I didn't know) a little way ahead turn into my drive way. I pulled up, blocking her car in just as she was getting out. She shouted at me 'you can't park there, you're blocking my drive!'

I assured her I wasn't, and she just blinked at me, then said 'you're blocking me in'. I said 'yes it appears so'. She blinked at me some more Grin

Eventually the penny dropped that I wasn't another cheeky fucker parent, and that she'd just pretended to live in my house!

Oh I wish I was there to see that 😂 I hope she was mortified!

lieselotte · 23/03/2023 13:53

I really don't get why these parents can't park a 5/10min walk from the school, spreading the parking burden over a wider area, and get their kids a bit of exercise at the same time

where I live most of them only live about 10 minutes' walk away anyway. To be fair a lot of people do walk.

Oh there's always someone who says it's not hurting you so why do you care!

The same ones who tell accidental landlords to undersell their properties vastly to tenants to give them a chance to get into the property ladder, probably. 😆

PollyPut · 23/03/2023 13:59

Send the school photos with the reg parked on your drievway. Ask the school to put note in their newsletter to ask the owner of reg AB12 CDE not to block any residents driveways.

They won't do it again

ItsCalledAConversation · 23/03/2023 14:01

No need to block them in, just put up a “no parking” chain with a sign.

How is that my problem?

You pollute, take up and make the spaces where my family lives, more dangerous.

You expect people like us to put up with that so you can live where you want and do the job you want?

Surely as an architect you're aware of how well planned environments and a good sense of "place" contribute to both the wellbeing of individuals and society at large?

Plenty of towns and cities have massively restricted urban car use- they still have heart surgeons and architects. In fact, those places often have better heath outcomes and healthier economies than we do.

And the ones who’d give away 99% of their hypothetical wealth to a relative in need.

Like I said.
In my post
I am not promoting car use
I am promoting wrap around childcare so people can work.
It was in the last paragraph.

I know you've said in first post you've spoken to the school but have you been in saying their warnings aren't enough? At DSs school, often teachers patrol outside and PCSOs too to look at parking and deter repeat offenders. Might be worth suggesting it.

Apparently drive owners should not block CFs in because the CF might have an appointment to attend. 🙄

I think that poster inadvertently outed themself as a CF by posting that. 😛

@Catspyjamas17

What about them?

It's not anybody else's problem but their own.

We're parents, presumably competent adults.

We each have the ability to make decisions on how to live our lives.

If we make decisions which require daily driving and parking in urban areas, that's our own fault. We do not have the right to impose ourselves and our cars, on others like this. Cars pollute, they take up space, damage infrastructure such as pavements, kill and injure thousands.

Why are people setting their lives up like this? I can understand people driving on the school run in rural areas or if disabilities are a concern but most of, should be taking some responsibility and not setting up our lives up like that.

Who the hell do people think they are?

So should I give up my job so I don't have to drive? How do you expect me to pay my bills when I'm doing a minimum wage job in the local shop?

soggydigestives · 23/03/2023 14:14

Yes I'd absolutely block them in entitled sods! Then I'd block the drive with recycling boxes and a chain!

cherish123 · 23/03/2023 14:14

I cannot believe someone would actually do this. I'd block them in. Alternatively, park or put cones over your drive way.

Visitors spaces are public spaces!

Having worked in this area for 30 years, my experience is that on most housing estates the visitors spaces are owned by the residents of the estate and are not public spaces. Certainly that is the case in Scotland.
