Plant-based chicken-style breaded fillet. The main two ingredients are water and oil!

I don't understand the boom in plant-based ultra-processed foods...........do people actually buy these as a healthy option? And if you are vegetarian why would you want something that looked like meat?

Can a meat eater please tell me why supermarkets don't package meat in its original state? ie a leg of a bloody and skinned cow?

If children were served dead chicken carcasses, they wouldn't find them so appetising. I can't get past the fact some children don't get the concept of a chicken nugget being a dead chicken.

Because a cow leg is fecking massive and wouldn';t fit in a basket?

Children are served chickens carcasses...what do you think a roast chicken is?

shyalice · 04/04/2023 17:35

I never understood the point of jelly babies. Why bother making all that effort to make a sweet look like a baby when you can just eat the real thing?

Why bother with a basket at all? Real women hunt and gather their own food.

Supermarkets...pfft.

No crackling on em either.

Where I grew up you'd see the whole carcasses of the cows hanging up behind the butcery counter. Chicken legs and feet for sale, as well as sheep and pigs heads.
People would sometimes home slaugher as well if it was a special occasion or in the case of chickens, a Sunday.
In fact go to any French market and you'll see chickens with their heads still attached.

I do think some vegans think that if only we saw the origin of our meat we'd be put off, but no.

ReadtheReviews · 04/04/2023 18:47

Sooooo boring op. Really dense to think vegetarians and vegans are that way because they dont like meat. Some are, but I bet it's the minority. I really liked the taste of meat but once I realised where it came from, the taste wasnt worth the guilt.

MMoon23 · 04/04/2023 18:54

Because it isn’t actually meat??
no one has died for me to eat it

no one eats it thinking it’s healthy, it’s just because they want it and because of the above reasons.

Oblomov23 · 04/04/2023 19:02

I've looked at the ingredients and it looks really grim, heavily processed and made of not much. Many of my friends are vegan and I have become a better vegan cook. But not this.

Kennykenkencat · 04/04/2023 20:09

I really don’t enjoy meat. When it’s cooking it reminds me of a combination of the smells of an old peoples home I visited when I was little and when I saw my first dead body and that certain aroma

I always check when I go into a place that is serving veggie burgers that they are the ones that are vegetable based and not the fake meat type. I prefer chilli or cottage pie made with lots of chilli beans, beans, lentils and veg and not the fake meat fried up to resemble mince.

Yes you make a vegan chicken casserole dish out of these.

Maybe children should waken up to the fact they're eating sweet Larry the lamb. I predict some tears 😅

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/04/2023 22:19

I don't think there's any illusion that these are healthy. I think it's more for the non-meat option. Sadly, a lot of meat alternative products are quite unhealthy.

I dunno. As a toddler I was sometimes seen picking up my toy farmyard animals (chickens, sheep, cows), and saying things like, "Chicken! Yum yum ☺️"

Why don't your children know this already?

I'm afraid that your theory that children will want to stop eating meat once they know it comes from an animal just isn't true. I mean... some obviously do become vegetarians, but most don't. Most people on MN already have children, the vast majority of whom are no doubt well aware what meat is, so you 'predicting tears' is a bit irrelevant.

“I dunno. As a toddler I was sometimes seen picking up my toy farmyard animals (chickens, sheep, cows), and saying things like, "Chicken! Yum yum ☺️" - bizarre. 😂 Can’t say I ever wandered around a farm or zoo exclaiming yum, yum!

Yes, utterly bizarre for a small child playing with little plastic toys in their bedroom to make connections between those toys and the various ways they relate to real life. Exactly like an adult wandering around a zoo yelling "YUMMY YUMMY MONKEYS IN MY TUMMY".

I do think some vegans think that if only we saw the origin of our meat we'd be put off, but no.

My life was similar.
My grandad kept a pig and slaughtered it himself. Hanging it upside down to catch the blood from its slit stomach to make black pudding.

I saw it, I heard it squeel. I still hear it.
The same with the chickens and cockerels when he used to wring their necks.
I became a non meat eater.

We re all different.

Some people who see it, experience it, even just learn about it do stop eating it.

If you think eating meat is wrong... it's weird to participate in a cultural norm of having a meat-mimic food on your plate. Totally illogical. There's lots of tasty vegan foods that don't have any pretence of being meat like. Eat those instead.

I’ll give your advice the consideration it deserves.

Which is none, if you didn’t pick up on it.

MIL used to insist on putting a meat-like or at least a 'meat replacement' item on my plate when she hosted me, when I was vegetarian. I could never get my head around why. Why did she need to do that. No one else who catered for me ever did it.

It's weird. I was polite to MIL, but I couldn't understand at all.

No, you aren’t right. You have an opinion which you are entitled to, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right one. It may even be the right one for you; but you can’t extrapolate that to society as a whole. Surely you understand that?

People are vegans/vegetarians for a variety of reasons. My reason is purely because I can get the same taste without harming animals. I’m happy to cook and handle meat for my family who all eat meat. I do eat TVP/setian etc as well as things like tofu; jackfruit and so on. I also eat pulses and other protein sources.

Sometimes, I just want to eat the same as my meat eating family, but I don’t want to consume animal flesh.

I’m far from the “angry vegan” type though, despite being vegetarian for 20 years. There is a whole spectrum of meat eating.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/04/2023 09:59

@lljkk , I don't think you are right either. I'm pretty grateful if someone has gone to the trouble of preparing me a meal suitable for vegetarians, and if it is a meat and two veg type of meal, then they probably didn't think it was substantial enough without the fake meat.

I dislike eating out because often the veggie dish is missing the protein element and seems like veg and two veg or pastry and two veg.

I don't mind if other people eat meat as long as I don't have to.

I do think this is true to an extent. Yes most children know what meat is but to see the process first hand would be different. I work in the food/beverage industry and have met several people who worked in the meat industry in the past and the majority became veggie. They also mentioned that workers don't last long in the meat industry.

Thelnebriati · 06/04/2023 11:29

Thats called 'confirmation bias'. You spoke to several people, they all had confirmation bias, you used their anecdotal evidence to reinforce your bias.
If this knock on effect was real, the children of farmers would most often turn vegan and leave farming.
