Scared of sumatriptan

stopbeeping · 20/03/2023 13:55

I've had a migraine all weekend I only had it three times in the last 3 years I think and I've vomited from the pain in my eyes and back of head

Have been vomiting all day and I've now started getting sick bile

The script is being prepared now for sumatriptan but I've read horror stories now I'm scared
But I'm in excruciating pain

I am struggling to use the screen but my husband can loook at responses on here

Thank you

It was great when I had to take it, like a soothing warm liquid being poured over my brain & taking the pain away. Fingers crossed for you.

SellFridges · 20/03/2023 13:57

I usually take one a week on average ti deal with my migraines. I’ve never been aware of a horror story. It can sometimes make me sleepy but usually I’m back to normal within a few hours.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 20/03/2023 13:58

Sumitriptan is a really effective treatment for migraines. It can also be bought over the counter so that should give you some reassurance re it’s “strength”. Perfectly safe to take.

Nevermind31 · 20/03/2023 13:58

Changed my life when I was prescribed it. Means that I usually need half an hour and I’m good.

Aftjbtibg · 20/03/2023 14:00

I’m not sure what horror stories there are but triptans have saved me on many occasions; I take a different one to sumatriptan as I had some mild side effects which were still better than the migraine but none with a different type

cestlavielife · 20/03/2023 14:00

You can try it
Or continue to suffer

At least you will know if it works or not for you

Dd does not get on with triprans but many people do you only know if you try

So1invictus · 20/03/2023 14:01

Sumatriptan changed my life too. Literally . I used to be in bed vomiting for 48 hours. Now if I get a migraine and get a pill early enough, my day goes back to normal.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 20/03/2023 14:01

What are you scared of? I take a different triptan but DCs take sumatriptan, worse that happens is it doesn’t work and you carry on puking and wanting to die. If it does work you may get sleepy for a little bit, tbh the hangover from the migraine is worse.

Good luck

DrManhattan · 20/03/2023 14:06

Never heard bad stories about it. I'm a fan

I suffer from Cluster Headache Syndrome so i have the injectable version of it as the tablets take too long to work ..

I can say with confidence that had i not bee prescribed this almost 20 years ago now then i would have been dead from suicide by now.

Im not sure what horror stories you have heared but they are untrue - it is a medical miracle and instant relief from unimaginable pain for me.

Take one now - you will be migraine free within the hour :)

ImJustADaddy · 20/03/2023 14:22

I do remember the neurologist saying i shouldnt have more than 4 injections a day because it can tighten the blood vessels in your heart .. (thats the way in which it works, by reducing the swelling in blood vessels in your head)
But one small dose from a tablet is no where near in the range to be worried about this .. As said above, you can buy the tablets over the counter

HawthornLantern · 20/03/2023 14:25

I don't know about the stories you have heard either, but sumatriptan was a lifesaver for me. I use a different one now - but again - it gave me my life back. The relief when the claws start to recede is incredible.

Handsnotwands · 20/03/2023 14:29

i take LOADS of supatriptan, it's amazing and has changed my life.

i get a bit of a tight feeling across my chest and my finger tips tingle a bit and things i touch feel warm but other than that they work like magic

ShirleyPhallus · 20/03/2023 14:33

Can i ask what you’re scared of?

Both my mum and I suffer from migraines and have been prescribed sumatriptan. I’d rather live without my asthmas medication than without sumatriptan. It works, brilliantly, for both of us.

LakieLady · 20/03/2023 15:41

Sumatriptan was a lifesaver for me. I was getting 2-3 attacks a week that would have me heaving violently every few minutes for 24-48 hours and with the most god-awful pain. I was off work so much that I was on a capability procedure because of absence. Nothing else had ever worked.

My migraines mainly started during the night, so once I took the sumatriptan I could go back to sleep and be able to go to work the next day. I wouldn't be firing on all cylinders, but at least I was there.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 20/03/2023 15:47

None of the other meds you've tried will stop a migraine attack, the meto is for nausea and propranolol is a daily preventative, both great in their own ways but won't abort an attack!

OP, I mean this gently but do you normally suffer from anxiety? You sound very anxious about this, I would take crack if it would get me out of an attack

Horror stories? I'm not aware of them. Sumatriptan has saved me on many occasions - you'll be so glad when you've used it.

susiesuelou · 20/03/2023 15:57

Sumatriptan is an absolute life saver for me, I have had some horrific migraines and this is the only thing that works. I take a tablet at the first sign of a migraine and get into bed with the room as dark as possible. Wake up a couple hours later a new woman. I've never heard any horror stories about this drug, so not sure what that's about. Hope you feel better soon OP.
