MIL called me and DH yuppies?

I feel like it's supposed to be derogatory based on what I read online. I am 30 so I think this term is not used often nowadays.

And the thing is I don't feel like a yuppie! We earn above national average but around median for London (DH earns 65k, I earn 45k), we have a mortgage on a z3 flat.

Ha ha havent heard that word in years!

YukoandHiro · 20/03/2023 09:35

You're DINKYS now

Nc252525673 · 20/03/2023 09:35

Do you wear power suits and talk loudly into massive brick like mobile phones?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 20/03/2023 09:35

Haven't heard that term for years, is she living in the 1980s? I wouldn't take any notice she's just looking a bit silly imo. But I think she's boasting to be honest. Why does she know what you earn?

Comedycook · 20/03/2023 09:36

It's just a dated term for young professional.

I'd not take it too seriously

Talipesmum · 20/03/2023 09:36

That’s kind of a hilarious outdated semi insult! Be truthful - do you both have Mobile Phones, and do you ever wear Smart City Clothes? Are you dressed a bit 80’s? Do you have very fancy digital watches?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/03/2023 09:37

Think Angelica's mum in Rugrats :)

Seeline · 20/03/2023 09:37

Young upwardly mobile person

Sounds like you're doing well.
30 is still young as far as I'm concerned (mid 50s)

Tempone · 20/03/2023 09:37

Op do you have a filofax?

LlynTegid · 20/03/2023 09:38

That is so last century, as is DINKYs which is more applicable to you.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 20/03/2023 09:38

And you laughed when she said it right?

If not why not? I think that's hilarious.

Buy an oversized inflatable mobile and take it with you when you visit next 😂

Comedycook · 20/03/2023 09:38

£110k household income is high. I don't think it's average for London...most people are on less.

WimpoleHat · 20/03/2023 09:39

It’s an old fashioned term - as others have said, haven’t heard it for years! It’s not an insult as such - means you have a good job and you’re doing well.

She doesn't know precisely tbh. I mentioned once we no longer qualify for child benefit if we had a child cos DH earn around the 65k threshold..

Yuppies - young unmarried professionals? It’s hardly insulting is it? Sounds descriptive to me!

SeasonFinale · 20/03/2023 09:40

It's not derogatory.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 20/03/2023 09:40

Young Urban Professional - that takes me back 😂

You need big hair and shoulder pads

louderthan · 20/03/2023 09:40

Do either of you wear red braces?

Needmorelego · 20/03/2023 09:40

I don't think it was ever an insult as such. Haven't heard it in donkeys years. I would have laughed.

Ishefuckingkiddingme · 20/03/2023 09:41

I wouldn’t find this insulting at all. If I had to decide between insult and compliment - I’d go compliment but it’s fairly neutral in my opinion.

louderthan · 20/03/2023 09:41

I think it's hilarious. Please what is a DINKY though?

WimpoleHat · 20/03/2023 09:41

Yuppies - young unmarried professionals?

Young, upwardly mobile professionals. But agree it’s not an insult as such; it used to conjure up images of City types (as other have said, with the first mobile phones!)

Needmorelego · 20/03/2023 09:42

@louderthan DINKY is "Duel Income No Kids Yet"

WimpoleHat · 20/03/2023 09:42

Please what is a DINKY though?

Dual income, no kids.

louderthan · 20/03/2023 09:42

Ahhh, double income no kids yet
