What the fuck is wrong with me

sleepymcsleepface · 19/03/2023 17:57

I’m unsure if there’s something wrong with me or not.

I’ve been horrifically exhausted recently. It probably started roughly a few months ago and has been getting worse ever since. I used to be fine with 8 hours of sleep a night (I would feel a bit tired but not exhausted) but now I’m getting even more sleep than that and I permanently feel so so tired. My typical schedule now is to come home from work or uni and nap for at least 3 hours. Then I wake up and get ready and go to bed and sleep through. I cannot go a day without napping or sleeping or else I can barely keep my eyes open and I just feel so drained and tired

i don’t understand why I’m so tired recently. I’m not stressed or anxious or depressed. Im not sleep deprived or over-slept, I’m not dieting or eating badly, I’m not otherwise unwell and I recently had a full blood test which was fine. I’ve had some other bizarre symptoms but this is the worst. I permanently feel like I’ve been hit by a car and I’m so tired. I even got the train home from uni and was so exhausted from doing that and walking 10 minutes to the house from the station that I was falling asleep as I was barely in the door.

anyone else ever had this? I recently met up with my friends and was so tired I could barely stay awake over lunch. I slept on the train home then again when I got home then I woke up and went to bed for the night because I was so exhausted. I’m really struggling with this and I can’t explain why but I have a horrible feeling something isn’t right with my body but I don’t know what/why. It’s just a gut instinct

Definitely need more in depth bloods.
Diet overhaul.
How old are you? Do you smoke? Are you under 25 BMI? Do you do any exercise?

MamaBearThius · 19/03/2023 19:05

Vitamin D here too!! I cried at my doctor for how tired and useless I was feeling, she arranged a blood test including vitamin D and I was found to be insufficient. Been on the supplements (prescribed 1000x RDA) for 3 weeks or so now and feel a lot more like myself

Ericabro · 19/03/2023 19:05

I agree with the earlier poster this sounds so like sleep aponea do you snore?

StripeyDeckchair · 19/03/2023 19:05

This was what I was like prior to being diagnosed with an underactive thyroid
It was awful, I'd wake up tired & be tired all day.

BreatheAndFocus · 19/03/2023 19:06

Did the GP test your Vitamin D? Did you have your folate (?) and B vitamins tested? Deficiencies of those can cause major tiredness and weakness.

Also, did you actually see your blood results? I was told my iron level was “fine” but it was actually borderline low and having a supplement helped a lot.

Finally, how are your bowels? Malabsorption can cause extreme tiredness because you’re not absorbing what you should from food.

SometimesMaybe · 19/03/2023 19:08

Under active thyroid or vit b12 deficiency?

Delectable · 19/03/2023 19:18

Vit D and iron. NHS level for normal is not optimal for the average person.

EverythingsPeachy · 19/03/2023 19:19

Look up hemochromatosis. One of the key symptoms is the constant fatigue. Symptoms become an issue from mid 30s onwards. My. OH suffered for years his gp was next to useless. Changed to a new gp first thing they suggested was the genetic test to be done which was unfortunately positive. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Mangogogogo · 19/03/2023 19:23

Honestly ‘long covid’ did this to me. I’m about half way to feeling better now. I wasn’t even ill when I actually HAD covid!

ive always been one to just crack on but I literally couldn’t keep my eyes open. I had to stop driving for a while 😣

Doggydarling · 19/03/2023 19:27

Have you had covid or any other viral infection? I had glandular fever aged 12 and 40 years later I still suffer from fatigue, was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia all as a result of that infection a lifetime ago. Opiates are the only thing deal with the pain (still bloody severe today though) and pacing for the fatigue, I attended a pain management programme 14 years ago where they thought us to pace ourselves and started us using digital alarms, to begin with it was 10 minutes activity, 20 minutes rest but we learnt to adjust it to suit ourselves. I hope you feel better soon.

QueenBee1234 · 19/03/2023 19:32

Sounds like me, I have under active thyroid and 8 hours sleep didn't touch the sides (young kids so very rarely got close to 8 hours anyway!)
People joke I could sleep on a washing line and I have ended up stranded in a town miles away from home because I fell asleep on the last bus!
I find the best thing for me (apart from finally getting medication after ten years of testing and not being deemed beyond normal levels, and eventually testing off the scale) is to power through things.
I have to work 8+ hours a day or we will be homeless, so I do it.
I have to go out at weekends, kids activities, shopping, general daily life so I do it.
It helps me to remember that whether I do anything or nothing I will still be exhausted so I might as well do the 'something' and have a reason to be knackered!!
Definitely get back to your GP and pester for more testing....you need to know what you are dealing with to manage it.

JamSandle · 19/03/2023 19:34

I'm always tired. Had all the blood tests. Apparently nothing wrong with me. But awful fatigue.

mistermagpie · 19/03/2023 19:35

What are the other bizarre symptoms?

I ask because I had some bizarre symptoms that nobody could explain, the usual blood tests etc came back normal but I felt so tired and weak and I just knew something was wrong.

Long story and about three years of back and forth and pushing for answers and I've recently been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition. The symptoms of which are varied and can be a bit odd.

My diagnosis was made via a blood test but you have to be actually testing for it, so nothing showed up on a standard blood test from my GP.

I'm saying all this to say three things - one, don't ignore the bizarre symptoms, two, just because your bloods came back normal it doesn't mean there isn't something going on, and three, trust yourself- if you think it's not right then it's not, you know your body best.

Dymaxion · 19/03/2023 20:10

Could you be pregnant ? my first trimester and a bit more, with my first was very much like this fatigue wise.
How much do you weigh ? I am asking you this as someone who is very fat so please don't be offended, sleep apnea can make you feel incredibly tired. At the other end of the spectrum, if you are underweight, that too can make you feel tired. What is your diet like ?
Had you been ill prior to this happening ?
What are the 'bizzare' symptoms you mentioned ?

CatsGinAndTwiglets · 19/03/2023 20:27

So many possibilities. Low thyroid, vit d, vit b12, iron and ferritin all likely and the nhs ranges are a pile of shite to avoid having to treat people- look up the optimal ranges and ask for a
print out of your results!! Peri menopause also causes issues way earlier than you might think. And the impact of stress when you’re working, dealing with kids and a home and ageing parents and rising bills etc etc isn’t to be underestimated. It’s not easy.

bluetongue · 19/03/2023 20:32

TeenLifeMum · 19/03/2023 18:55

Did they check your ferritin? My iron was okay but ferritin was 6 and I was really struggling with exhaustion.

Same. Mine wasn’t that low but bad enough to cause me bad fatigue. My arms and legs felt like they were made of concrete, a number of people told me I looked unwell and my hair was falling out. The supplements weren’t fun to take but I felt so much better once my ferritin levels were normal.

It was caused by my very heavy periods. I started taking tranexamic acid and it was life changing.

anon2022anon · 19/03/2023 20:32

I've had this a few years ago, and again earlier this year for about 2 months. The doctor suggested chronic fatigue, the first time was put down to post viral fatigue after glandular fever, and I actually think this was the same again.
Symptoms were:
Exhausted tired, falling asleep whenever I sat down
Absolute weariness. My arms and legs were like dead weights, and the thought of getting up the stairs made me cry.
Brain fog- forgetting words, trailing off during sentences, unable to remember basic instructions or whether I'd done something
Almost slurring my words/ drooling at times, as if I'd been asleep and woken up
Physical pain in places like my neck and shoulders, the rest of my body felt like I'd done a workout.

I seem to be on the mend again now. I paced myself as far back as I could for a couple of weeks, and tried not to do anything on days off.
B12- I have injections anyway, but I'm waiting test results to see if I need a loading dose

Supplements- who knows what has helped, but I'm currently taking a liquid iron, coq10, vitamin D, magnesium, b vitamins, and a multi vitamin daily. On a couple of other threads the coq10 was highly recommend for brain fog.

surprisesurprised · 19/03/2023 21:23

I went through a patch of fatigue and depression - for me this was due to lack of exercise. Now that I exercise a few times a week I don't feel it, feel so much better!

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/03/2023 21:28

I have ME. It could be the start of ME .

Tess227 · 19/03/2023 21:33

Hi
please ask to have your B12 levels checked, not always checked routinely & is a cause of extreme fatigue, numbness & pins and needles to extremities, could be pernicious anaemia
hope you find answers

Soakitup37 · 19/03/2023 21:58

Sounds like me pre diagnosed with underactive thyroid. Your bloods can come back “normal” even when you’re on the floor exhausted.

sleepymcsleepface · 19/03/2023 21:58

Sorry im just replying now. I had to go for another sleep (ironic I suppose)

my vit D levels and folate etc were all fine. I did wonder if it would be low but it wasn’t even on the lower end of normal (I can’t remember off the top of my head but it was absolutely fine)

the other symptoms are weight gain even though I’ve not changed anything in my diet and I don’t eat loads of junk. I can’t tell where the weight is (eg I’ve not suddenly developed a bigger tummy etc) I don’t look any different but I’ve gained a stone somewhere on my body and I don’t even know where. My weight is still a good BMI (under 25) but obviously if I keep gainting weight then it won’t be. I’ve always enjoyed exercising so I still do that a lot despite it being hard when I’m so tired

im also always cold. I had the house heating on at 30 today to try and heat up and was still shivering, meanwhile my family were melting with it. The only time I feel warm is sometimes during the night I wake up swimming in my own sweat and I’m absolutely boiling hot. We sleep with the thermostat at a normal temperature and I’m always cold going to bed, it’s just sometimes I wake up and im like a lobster in a boiling pot. I assumed it was maybe hormones or something causing it.

I’ve also developed horrendous skin problems (seborreic dermatitis) like I’m covered in a layer of it. Nothing is getting rid of that either. Not sure if that’s related or a red heading. Around 15% of my body is covered in it and you can’t actually see my skin beneath it in some parts it’s so big

There’s been other weird symptoms but these are probably the main ones, not sure if they’re even related or just horrible coincidences

Sorry should have said b12 and thyroid were all fine too. I’m also 1000% not pregnant (thankfully!!) x

Yup hypothyroidism ticks all these boxes. Mine as coupled with pcos.
look it up it’ll feel like the light bulb going off in your head.

insist you get checked for both and ask for your t3 to checked in addition (it’s not routinely)

ghostyslovesheets · 19/03/2023 22:04

Watching with interest - I am already on b12 injections, thyroid med and HRT

In the past year I've lost 2 stone, can't eat much, and I am just wiped out tired - like bone tired all the time. Used to run, weight train etc - can't manage at all some weeks now

Had every test under the sun - cameras up and down, scans, bloods - nothing found at all

It's effecting all aspects of my life and I'm so fed up - if you get an answer let me know (latest Dr suggests include 'old age' (I'm 52!) and long Covid!
