To think it's mostly men who are scary drivers

My husband is The Driver. Oh, I can drive, but he will take possession of the keys for any journey he is on. He thinks he's above reproach. A flawless, excellent, even exemplary driver.

He is not. He is a fucking scary driver. Chopping and changing lanes on the motorway to dodge around other cars as if it's some kind of racing game. Going right up their arses as if they can't slam their feet on the brakes. Not indicating and thinking that he's perfectly safe, and that nobody else on the road will be so prickish as to not signal their intent to other drivers. Speeding, looking at his phone, undertaking...

And he has the audacity to be annoyed at me when I can't take it anymore and tell him to slow the fuck down, stop driving like he's in an action movie and prioritise the lives of the people in the car!

My dad is also a fucking scary driver. My sisters husband. My brother in law. My cousin. My friend. All of the scary drivers I've ever been in a car with have been men. The driver who smashed into my stationary car in traffic was a speeding man looking at his phone.

AIBU to think that maybe most men are not frightening reckless drivers but most frightening reckless drivers are men.

YANBU. Yeah, insurers know this perfectly well, the law just made them ignore it when setting premiums.

Equality isn't a one-way street.

TheaBrandt · 19/03/2023 13:52

Definitely yes. The odd exception that proves the rule a friend drives like an aggressive man even teens have noticed ! Don’t think she’s unsafe but drives racily has great cars and calls other drivers minor swear words “you utter tit” etc not to them but muttered. Dd finds it quite funny that a nearly 50 something mum is a boy racer!

riotlady · 19/03/2023 14:25

I think skill level is pretty equal across the genders, but aggressive drivers are 99% men that I’ve seen. Especially for dangerous overtaking

NerrSnerr · 19/03/2023 14:37

I can't imagine being married to someone who thinks they're the boss.

I would ask what would happen if the OP refuses to be driven by him because of his awful driving but I assume she's too scared of the bully.

lieselotte · 19/03/2023 16:02

OP it doesn't sound like your DH should be on the road. From your description, I wouldn't get in a car with him unless I was the one driving.

I think men are more likely to drive too fast and too aggressively.

But I think women are more likely to be inattentive, eg turning round to talk to the kids in the back. But their accidents are usually low speed and don't lead to injury.

There's a reason insurance used to be cheaper for women before the EU decided it was sexist. It was sexist, but it was justifiable in my view!

Surplus2requirements · 19/03/2023 16:23

When I was learning to drive my Dad told me the only way you can tell if you're a good driver is by how relaxed your passengers are.

That's always stuck with me.

speedygreedy · 19/03/2023 16:25

This page has some driving stats by gender (this is from 2019).

“Men are currently in possession of 72% of all penalty points in the UK”

Rememberal · 19/03/2023 16:32

I dunno. The most aggressive drivers I know are all male but I can't recall ever really feeling unsafe in the car because they're actually... good at handling the car if that makes sense?

If she drives she will be criticised non-stop, and he will probably still swear/rant at other drivers.

Whyisitsososohard · 19/03/2023 16:41

Yep I agree. U have also never experienced road rage from women I have from men. The handful of times this has occurred it's because they have been driving aggressively and too close etc.

I've no argument that aggressive drivers tend to be men and they cause/are involved in more RTCs but the points stats are slightly tempered by the fact men drive approx twice the mileage that women do so all things being equal you would expect them to have twice the number of points.

Just to clear up a few questions.

If I drive, he does comment and gasp and tell me which turn to take and which exit, when to indicate to come off the motorway, when to overtake etc.... it's like being in a driving lesson with an instructor who has no more skill than I do. I have never hit anything with my car. He has. I have never come off the road. He has. I have never had a terrifying near miss. He has. Multiple.

I have told him multiple times that if he is going to drive, he is going to do it safely. All that goes flittering out of his brain the second he joins a road higher than 40mph.

I am not scared of him and he is not The Boss or a bully. He just thinks he's king of the road and is bewildered at everyone's terror of his driving:

Men are more aggressive in every single way, they have more fights, murder more people, DV etc and yes, they are more aggressive drivers. Women are equally bad drivers, but do not display the same levels of aggression as men.

KnottyKnitting · 19/03/2023 17:22

I have to agree and they are usually driving either a BMW, and Audi or a Mercedes!

GoChasingWaterfalls · 19/03/2023 17:29

The statistics are pretty conclusive on this one:

www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/new-report-reveals-that-male-drivers-are-three-times-more-likely-to-be-in-r/

My husband isn't an aggressive driver, but he brakes soooo much later than me. I'll be slamming my right foot into that footwell and reaching for the JC handle long before he has reacted. It is sometimes quite scary.

Inject · 19/03/2023 17:33

It's certain people from certain backgrounds - who probably feel they have to prove something in their little lives.

It does make sense - there are certain people I've been with and I do feel like they drive too fast, but I also think they are pretty much in control of the car and have good skills. However, that won't help them if they get done for speeding.

It really isn't - men of all backgrounds drive too fast and aggressively from Mr White Van Man to Mr I Am More Important Than You Because I Drive An Audi/SUV.

The last time DH and I went out for a longer journey I told him to slow down sooner before roundabouts. It had been sleeting, it was a bit icy and I told him to consider his stopping distances. He thought I was being silly but he did do as I asked.

LlynTegid · 19/03/2023 17:37

The majority yes. Though not all of the 25% of people who should have the driving licences revoked.

Hollyhead · 19/03/2023 17:39

@Oysterbabe and you allow your kids to be driven by him?! I’m sorry but you are part of the problem. Shameful.

Again I'd like to point out that as men drive twice as many miles as women then a level playing field of any statistic of male/female competence/safety starts at 63% men and 33% women.

I do agree aggressive drivers do tend to be men but some results aren't quite as conclusive as they seem.

Marmite27 · 19/03/2023 21:47

My dad is the only driver I feel safe with. He’s a very good driver. My mum is too cautious and makes mistakes, my Dbro has never driven me, so I can’t comment.

DH’s family o the other hand, all supremely shit drivers. DH, SiL, BiLx2 and their wives. It’s like they’re constantly playing chicken. I won’t let any of them drive me. BiL 2 especially doesn’t pay attention to traffic lights. The only time I’ve been in a car with him as a driver I screeched ‘it’s on fucking Red’ at not one, not two, but 3 different sets of lights. How they’ve collectively not lulled themselves or someone else is a mystery to me.

DH is slowly getting better, and does acknowledge that I’m the better driver of the two of us now.

waterlego · 20/03/2023 07:58

Why do you drive like a dick @crocadilly?
