Found a worm in jar of M&S olives AFTER my daughter had some

This afternoon my daughter opened a jar of M&S black olives and ate some with her lunch. I was going to use the remainder for pizzas tonight and when I was emptying out the jar I noticed a white worm that looks like a maggot in the jar!! I will contact M&S about it tomorrow but in the meantime I just wanted to let anyone who buys these know to watch out. I’m hoping my daughter doesn’t get sick from the food AIBU? I’m pretty disgusted tbh.

Where’s the worm?

Allthecatsandcosyblankets · 18/03/2023 21:31

I doubt it would make her sick, however that would make me boke 😷🤢

Adelsette · 18/03/2023 21:32

Om the spoon in the plate where I emptied the olives into. It’s white

A whole worm, or half a worm?

UserEleventyBillionandOne · 18/03/2023 21:34

Oh it’s fine, just a little worm pickled in salt brine, it won’t make her sick.

Adelsette · 18/03/2023 21:34

It looks whole

Looks like a little moth larvae.

Careerdilemma · 18/03/2023 21:36

I couldn't get worked up about this. You're bound to get the odd worm in anything that grows. It's not going to make anyone ill even if they ate it.

Pestispeeved · 18/03/2023 21:37

Not doubt it was on/in the olives when picked. It has been brined and heat treated, DM always used to tell us that things like this were just added protein for free. Unless you bathe everything in pesticides it happens occasionally. I was never impressed by DM's reasoning but it did avert dramas.

Megapint · 18/03/2023 21:47

While it's a bit gross I can't see it would make anyone sick. It was prob tucked up chilling in the olive when it was pickled. My kids would probably have dared each other to eat it and they were gross so one of them probably would have.

Hankunamatata · 18/03/2023 21:47

Good source protein?

TigerDroveAgain · 18/03/2023 21:49

Why are you contacting them?

NorthernDrizzle · 18/03/2023 21:50

Valuable protein
Maggots live in olives and so not exceptional

Think of it like a prawn or shellfish.

user1473878824 · 18/03/2023 21:51

I once found a dead fly in my M&S salad. After I’d eaten it. ¯\(ツ)/¯ these things happen.

BillyMack · 18/03/2023 21:52

Oh shit. A natural product in a natural product. Perhaps the papers will hold the front page for your compo sad faces.

Fuckityfuckfuck123 · 18/03/2023 21:52

That'll be within their limits of expectation OP.
Anything that grows has things that crawl and live on it.
I couldn't get worked up about this, especially if you eat meat.

It's had treatments to keep it shelf stable so it's perfectly safe.

ÉireannachÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ · 18/03/2023 21:55

At least it was a M&S maggot not an Aldi one.

NorthernDrizzle · 18/03/2023 21:56

You would be paying extra if it was Mezcal

This is not just a pickled maggot.
It's an M&S pickled maggot.

That's what my grandad would have said 🤣

This.
How are people so far removed from food growing?
It’s a bloody fruit worm, and it indicates the crops weren’t excessively sprayed with nasty chemicals. It’s a good thing. It’s not harmful in any way.

Calling M&S, FFS. Tragic city dwellers.

Sockloon · 18/03/2023 22:13

Insects are a vital part of the ecosystem that enables us to grow fruit and vegetables, you found one in a piece of fruit. So what do you expect? 🤔

Are you seriously so far detached from how food is made in nature and all that comes with it?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 18/03/2023 22:06

This is not just a pickled maggot.
It's an M&S pickled maggot.

😂😂😂 I read your post with an ultra sultry voice in my head and that background music they used to have in their adverts.

Olives.
Sliced, black Hojiblanca olives.
Soaked in brine, with dashings of pickled, crunchy maggots.
This is not just food.
This is M&S food.

Theluggage15 · 18/03/2023 22:33

You need to educate yourself about how things grow.
