Is this normal re chicken pox?

DS (4) has chicken pox, it's the first time either of my Dc have had it so I don't know what is normal and what isn't. He didn't seem too bad for the first 24 hours just a bit grumpy and had a temp but not too many spots. Since then they have spread everywhere. They are on his eye lids, inside his ears and now in his mouth, is that normal? He hasn't eaten for 48 hours so I'm guessing the ones in his mouth are irritating him, just wanted to check they aren't dangerous to have in the mouth.

It's completely normal but is really miserable to have them so horribly.

Luckily the mouth ones form into ulcers quite quickly.

Turnipworkharder · 17/03/2023 17:55

Yes , unfortunately normal for some poor children.
Try soft food or lots of ice cream.
Hope he recovers soon.

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:03

Thanks both, good to know it's nothing to worry about. I feel so sorry for him, the ones on his eyelids are only just coming up but when they get bigger they are going to probably be really uncomfortable, plus inside his ear so he's got them in all the worst places bless him

Don’t worry about not eating but keep pushing fluids. Ice lollies are good.

Jellycats4life · 17/03/2023 18:06

Unfortunately yes. I remember my daughter had a pretty mild case but my son was absolutely smothered from scalp to toes and very unwell. It’s a horrible illness.

tealandteal · 17/03/2023 18:09

My DS (5) had them in half term and he had them in eyes, throat, ears. He had a temperature, and off his food as well. I bought some drinks in cartons to encourage him to drink enough.

DS (8 months) had it took weeks later and had it much milder, not sure if this was because I am still bf.

Blossomtoes · 17/03/2023 18:19

I got it when I was 26. You really do not want to know some of the places I got them.

Frogdoglog · 17/03/2023 18:22

It’s horrible, not planning any more kids but if I did I’d seriously consider paying for a vaccine. My dd was the same absolutely covered from head to toe, she lay on the cold living room floor and cried for 2 days straight, then her eczema flared up she ended up with horrible infection that spread into the chicken pox.

Rainbow1901 · 17/03/2023 18:25

Some kids have it rough, spots everywhere and other kids just one or two. But a bath with sodium bicarbonate helps takes the itching out. Just let them eat or drink what they want and they'll soon be feeling a bit brighter.

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:26

@Frogdoglog oh no that sounds awful, your poor Dd! I'm just hoping DD doesn't catch it from her brother and if she does that she has a mild case of it!

Please get his eye ones checked. My 8 month old got it SO bad and gp wouldn't listen. She ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics as they were severe and doctors said it could have blinded her!!

lljkk · 17/03/2023 18:29

sadly I think your DD will get it for sure.
It varies. DC1-2 barely noticed, DC3 was grumpy & DC4 was miserable.

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:29

@CrackingCrackling oh no that's terrible! They have only just come up on his eyes this evening so they are pretty small at the moment but I will keep an eye over night and get him seen if they get bigger

Be careful of any of the spots getting really red around them and the redness spreading. If in doubt, get a biro and draw round the redness and take photos to compare. My Dd got Strep A and Staph (B?) on top of chickenpox.

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:31

Sorry to keep asking stupid questions but do these look normal. Haven't seen any pics online with them being so red around the actual spots...

Completely normal.

advice222 · 17/03/2023 18:34

They look completely normal, he’s got a bad case bless him! My son had them on his eyeballs!

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:34

@Blossomtoes thank you. I'm have no idea what to expect as they haven't had it before

OP posts:
barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:35

@advice222 oh my goodness, I didn't even realise you could get them on eyeballs!

Soubriquet · 17/03/2023 18:38

It’s normal but I would keep a close eye. If you feel worried at any time, please see a doctor.

I had to take my ds to the doctor with his chicken pox as they got infected. The receptionist placed in another room whilst we waited for the doctor (isolation) and then I got given some antibiotics

MsPolly · 17/03/2023 18:38

Yes it does look like a bad case poor kid! Also in case no one has already said no ibruprofen it makes it so much worse. Plenty of poxicilin or virasoothe

Tinysoxxx · 17/03/2023 19:14

My DD’s redness covered a large area. She also was v drowsy and floppy. And she several hundred spots so the redness took over her entire side. Try and keep the itchiness down so the spots aren’t stretched and keep his fingernails clean.
I put oats in some tights then attached them to the bath taps so Dds could bathe in oaty water. I don’t know if that’s recommended anymore. Mine were much younger and little Dd was a baby and crawling which didn’t help as spots got infected.
Keep photos of any redness you are worried about (the phone should time stamp it).

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:35

Yes! But he was most bothered about the ones on his willy and bumhole as he was in nappies at the time 😱My eldest caught them and had barely any so it was a shock to me too when youngest had them so bad. I hope your poor little boy feels better soon! Do they still do camomile lotion? That helped.

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 19:41

@advice222 yea my little one has lots on his Willy and all around that area and he wears a nappy at night so he's very uncomfortable at the moment. He just keeps crying and telling me he's itchy bless him.

@Tinysoxxx so many people have told me about the oat baths so I gave him one tonight and he did say it felt nice on his spots so hopefully it will help bring the irritation down

just wanted to echo the eye thing, if he gets any on his actual eyeball then seek medical help urgently. Keep a watch on the eyelid spots too. We found poxicilin good
