Is this normal re chicken pox?

DS (4) has chicken pox, it's the first time either of my Dc have had it so I don't know what is normal and what isn't. He didn't seem too bad for the first 24 hours just a bit grumpy and had a temp but not too many spots. Since then they have spread everywhere. They are on his eye lids, inside his ears and now in his mouth, is that normal? He hasn't eaten for 48 hours so I'm guessing the ones in his mouth are irritating him, just wanted to check they aren't dangerous to have in the mouth.

Unfortunately normal Sad My DDs have both just had it - DD1 had it really mildly and only had about 40 spots in total. DD2 probably had 40 on her head alone. She was only 9 months old. She had them on her eyelids, in her ears, in her mouth, and really badly in her nappy areas. The bit at the top of her bottom was so bad that there was no skin between blisters. It was brutal. We nappy changed on the hour every two hours (except overnight) with a full wash, pat dry and sudocrem regimen every time to make sure nothing got infected.

The GOOD news is that she's absolutely fine, now, a few weeks on. She has one scar in her hair where she knocked a scab off prematurely, but otherwise you really wouldn't know she'd had it.

I hope your DS feels better soon!

My three kids were absolutely pickled in them. My middle one I watched as the redness spread down her face and body with the spots popping up as it did. She had almost no gaps between them and had them all inside her genital area. It was awful. My eldest had them all down her throat. She was in so much pain

Sorry to hear all your little ones have struggled so much with them. It's so horrible isn't it, I wish I could just make them disappear for him. In hindsight I wish I would have just got the vaccine for both DC now but I didn't even find out about it until they had been exposed to it so it probably wouldn't have helped anyway

Poor little boy. Are you giving him antihistamine?

barbiedinosaur · 17/03/2023 20:05

@TheClash2023 not yet but only because I've been to two supermarket pharmacies today and can only find ones that are suitable from 6+. Is there one they can take from 4?

Very normal. My 3 year old is recovering from the pox right now. He had them mainly over his back and all around his genital area bless him. Just a few on his face and also had some in his mouth.
The mouth ones were probably the most problematic as he would often complain of being in pain whenever he ate something bless him.
Hope your little one gets better soon.

Piriton do one for children

TheClash2023 · 17/03/2023 20:13

Sorry posted too soon. They can take the syrup from 12 months

Try an oaty bath. Porridge oats in a sock and pop it in the bath. It's helped to soothe the itching.

ThisIsNotMyUser · 17/03/2023 20:16

DD has it at the moment too. We've been doing piriton every 4hrs with calpol and poxclin foam and it seems to be helping. Hope it clears up quickly.

Crimsonripple · 17/03/2023 20:17

Piriton, calpol, chamomile lotion and poxcilin are helping us through this at the moment. Also started the oat baths. Also keep him occupied as that takes his mind off the itching.

my dd’s was far worse than your pic when she was 6 months. Be reassured he’ll be ok but it is bloody awful. I’d definitely look into vaccination if I’d have known how horrible it can be.
