To Think That Oxfam Should Cancel Themselves

Oxfam have published a New Language Guide (if you google that phrase, there are various news sites and indeed Oxfam's own site) pouring approbation on terms such as 'Mother' , 'biological sex', 'field trip' and even apologising for the fact that the guide is written in English-a colonial language.

There are many more examples-some laughable and some quite frightening.

As Oxfam exists , primarily. to help other nations-many of them non-white-couldn't this be see as a patronising, 'Great White Saviour Organisation' and the next logical step, therefore, is to cancel itself.

Have you tried not using this "New Language Guide"? I'd just ignore it myself.

Sounds like the source of many a laugh at the idiocy!

They are a classic example of a charity that has lost its focus on its core aims.

The time and money spent on developing that guide should have been spent on their core mission.

They made a deliberate policy decision a number of years ago to change their core mission from only practical projects helping those in need to incorporating advocating politically for those in need through political lobbying. Whilst there might be a role for this in large charitable organisations Oxfam are an absolute classic example where it can go wrong. There culture is now full of its own self importance, self interest, power and hierarchical bullying and abuse wrapped up with entitlement and financial greed and mismanagement. Unfortunately they still live on a past repretation of actually doing some good and people still support them. They have millions in public funding.
Amensty International aren't far behind them and going the same way.

That's a bit jumbled. Is being a mother about being female or about giving birth?

If you're confused ask an adult.

These huge charities waste so much time and resources on this nonsense. Amnesty International is no better.

Amnesty has become an appalling cesspit of antisemitism and misogyny in recent years. It's really sad
In its early years it was a true force for good.

I stopped donating to them after the disgusting Haiti revelations . I don’t know how they felt able to use the phrase Empowering Women above their shop fronts after that.

A friend spent some time at their Oxford headquarters and told me she was shocked at the culture of excess and profligacy there. This booklet just continues to endorse my opinion of them.

YANBU, OP. Oxfam seems to me to be rotten.

This bit in the language guide in particular made me raise my eyebrow:

'we avoid

prostitute, prostitution, use of prostitutes, use of sex workers'

^^
