Woke up with a tickly throat, I've never had covid but my dad is positive so I tested. positive. I'm due at work soon and it's important. But I work with someone who is currently 20 weeks pregnant.
It would be wrong to still go wouldn't it? Or will it be ok if I wear a mask?

A tightly fitting ffp2 will protect the person wearing it. It may provide some protection to others but only for around 20 minutes until it becomes saturated with water vapour from the mouth. It then needs to be changed to be effective, instead of a sponge concentrating virus . People are very, very poor at crossinfection protection and unless it is your job and you have got into a routine of proper proceedures I can guarantee what you think you are doing to help probably isn't.

For those who would change what they do if working with someone vulnerable why? Do you know the medical history of everyone you work with and pass by during the day? Do you know who is on high dose steroids or immunocompromised? Do you know who has a relative on dialysis? Do you know who has just become pregnant when they don't know themselves?

If you are worrying about others like the pregnant woman in the workplace you should treat everyone as if they were vulnerable because you have no idea of peoples medical and social history.

Are the people saying they have to go in whilst having c19 wearing an N95 mask to limit the damage and warning others?

Apologies - didn't see previous post.

It can also be argued that its selfish to expect people to lose pay and/or have definite risk (financial hardship) which would also affect others to reduce a possible risk of covid.

Quite possibly @Megifer, yes. And of course it depends on the nature of your work too. If you work outside and/or on your own then clearly it's fine to keep working; in a small office alongside someone you know for a fact to be pregnant, I think the balance of risk shifts somewhat.

@BashirWithTheGoodBeard, totally agree. I was only answering the point that a PP said it wasn't selfish to put you and your family before others. And, well, it is, that is the very definition of the word. I didn't say it was wrong to do it, I said it was wrong not to call it selfish.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 17/03/2023 15:26

Sure, should've clarified I didn't mean you there necessarily, not wanting to shoot the messenger etc. It's the exact same selfishness, just expressed in different ways.
