Does anyone else find these terms irritating?

Other unrelated terms/phrases/words I find really annoying:

”The community”
”My journey”
”Mental health”
”Empowering/empower/empowered”

I’ve heard all of these this morning.

“The cost of living crisis” drives me insane to hear repeated again and again, why can’t people use their own words?

Correlation · 15/03/2023 12:05

Oh yes!

Like back in 2008/9 people kept saying “the recession”

You have an issue with the term “mental health”? Are you broken? That’s like being offended by the term “broken leg” or “waiting list”. It’s just what it’s called, it’s the official and only word for that. What else would you have people say instead: “thought medical condition” or “mind status”?

In fact, none of the terms you’ve used are in any way stand-out or offensive or icky or irritating. You must really struggle to communicate if you can’t cope with so many very normal words and phrases.

That’s because we were in a recession!! Like how people say “the pandemic” when referring to the pandemic or how they say “the war” when referring to when we were at war. It’s just using words for what words mean. Do you just find verbal communication irritating?!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 15/03/2023 12:09

"Essential trips" used to wind me up something chronic.

ScramblePud · 15/03/2023 12:10

I get really annoyed when people use colours to describe the colour of something. Like when a car is blue and they say it’s blue.

… … … 🙄

Correlation · 15/03/2023 12:10

@Chickenly well people could say how they feel rather than using the term “mental health”.

Because alot if people dont like to talk about their mental health. This term makes it easier for them I'm baffled you take offence to it

@Chickenly well people could say how they feel rather than using the term “mental health”.

How would that even work? “My brother took his own life after years struggling with being sad” or “the NHS provision for feelings is woefully underfunded”.

Is this a joke? You can’t really be this out of touch and precious.

Ok…so what are the alternatives?

Sqqueeeeeeee · 15/03/2023 12:15

This is either not at all going the way OP hoped or it’s going exactly the way that OP had hoped.

WinterMusings · 15/03/2023 12:16

Weird.

Correlation · 15/03/2023 12:16

@Chickenly there’s nothing wrong with the first sentence except of course if this is true I’m really sorry.

In the second sentence you could say psychological/psychiatric services…

OP posts:
Correlation · 15/03/2023 12:17

@Sqqueeeeeeee yeah I am genuinely shocked but given how popular the phrases/words are that I’ve mentioned it’s no wonder. Nevermind everyone!

But that wouldn’t be accurate. The word is “mental health” - psychological and psychiatric services aren’t the same things. Words mean what they mean.

tigger1001 · 15/03/2023 12:18

Yeah, sorry I think you are being unreasonable and unrealistic. It's just words describing things.

I struggle to see why anyone would take exception to "mental health" for example. It's describing a particular area of health and well-being.

None of your examples would give me a seconds pause to be honest.

You’re genuinely shocked that most people aren’t offended by basic words in daily usage and don’t support the cutting of those useful terms from our vocabulary just because you have an unexplained, unjustified and irrational hatred for those terms? That actually shocks you?

Correlation · 15/03/2023 12:20

@Sqqueeeeeeee bloody hell that’s a bit of a stretch! I only said I find them irritating. Jesus Christ.

Yeah, I hate cleaning too.

Maray1967 · 15/03/2023 12:24

‘Mental health’ is surely only irritating as a term when it’s misused? As it regularly is i.e. ‘I’ve got mental health’, when it should be ‘ I’ve got poor mental health’.

I’m baffling by the other terms people find irritating eg recession. What else should we say?
