Sainsburys think I’m a thief - AIBU?

Something really odd happened to me the other day and I want to see what others think of it. I’ve been shopping at sainsburys for over 3 years now using scan & go (extremely convenient!) Been selected for a random check maybe 3 or 4 times in all this time, all clear, no issues at all.
Recently I’ve noticed that every time I’m shopping the security guard seems to be following me. For instance last week I was looking for my DD’s formula on the shelf and when I turned around I noticed he walked right past me. I was the only person in that isle. Yesterday I was looking in the meat section and surprise surprise, he was there again. Now, having finished my shopping I went over to the self checkout till to pay and I suddenly get a message on my device saying “hold on, we just need to do a trolley check” - I thought okay, never mind, it happens. I suddenly notice the security guard talking to the guy who’s about to scan my shopping, they were having a random chat about something laughing. The guy comes over and says “oh today we need to scan 40 items” .. I thought whaaat? They usually scan 10max, where did 40 come from? (Unless I heard 40 but in reality he said 14, not sure now). Anyway, he starts scanning my shopping and then goes “oh shit sorry I think I’ve scanned the Maltesers twice, you’re gonna have to do a full trolley re scan now”. So I proceeded to a separate till where they scanned all my shopping again, the woman didn’t say anything at all, just apologised, I paid and that was it. When I got home I realised that my shopping ended up being £18 more expensive than what it said on the hand-held device, making me look like a thief? I did buy a lot of the same items twice so perhaps it didn’t register properly.
AIBU to think this whole experience was a bit strange?

So if you hadn't have been stopped you would have walked out with £18 worth of stuff for free? Sounds like it was a good idea they stopped you!

lol

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/03/2023 09:52

Why would a security guy be scanning your items?

Albiboba · 15/03/2023 09:53

So you were going to pay £18 less than your shop actually costs?

It sounds like they sort of have a point.
You should really be checking to make sure the items have actually gone through. It seems highly unlikely it would be an error that many times.

MichelleScarn · 15/03/2023 09:53

When you looked at your receipt and the items you brought home, what was correct because either they've over scanned and you've paid £18 more than you should or you underscanned and you would have paid £18 less than you should?

Flamingogirl08 · 15/03/2023 09:54

I'm so confused. So you had actually taken £18 worth of stuff that you were not going to pay for. So security were completely correct?

Why are you posting? 🤣

OneTC · 15/03/2023 09:54

Trying to steal 18 quid worth of stuff is what made you look like a thief OP 😅

OP had under-scanned.

"I'm a thief, Sainsbury's think I'm a thief, the security guy did his job well and I got caught"

ScottishLavender · 15/03/2023 09:55

Maybe use the staffed tills for a while to avoid accidental £18 undercharges? 🙄

Streamside · 15/03/2023 09:55

I suppose the real issue here is that your shopping through the till cost £18 more and that must be because you hadn't scanned quite a few things. It's a business and that's how they work so why take it personally or think it strange. Their anti theft measures have worked for them.

AppleKatie · 15/03/2023 09:55

Lol

Kranke · 15/03/2023 09:56

It’s normal for security to focus on formula and meat aisles as the are the most common stolen items.

Getting caught for stealing made me look like a thief!! AIBU for thinking sainsburys are out of order??

Lol, did you get your receipt?
Is there any item scanned twice?

Sorry op but this story of yours is very strange and something doesn't add up.

£18 is quite a lot to miss out??

This made me laugh out loud!

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2023 09:59

When dh and I first started using scan and go we were chatting and missed 2 bottles of 30p bleach. I felt awful but that was a mistake.

£18 is not a mistake.

OreganoOregano146 · 15/03/2023 10:02

Apologies, I should have pointed out that I had a lot of those “nectar app offers” which meant that I was paying a fraction of the price for milk, asparagus, kitchen towels etc. I made use of those offers the other day and having checked the receipt when I got home, they were not applied at the till in the end hence the huge £18 difference.
Having re read my thread it makes zero sense, no wonder you’re all pouncing on me🤣

Unless that £18 is one item, I think you need to pay significantly more attention when using the self scan. Either that or check the receipt carefully and make sure it wasn't the cashiers mistake.

sydneysunset · 15/03/2023 10:05

Something similar happened to me when my eldest dc was a baby. I was in a small local Sainsburys & I put a few items in my dc’s pram (on top of his blanket) to avoid carrying them. The security guard came across and asked to look in the pram after I’d paid. I hadn’t stolen anything, but thereafter he seemed to watch me like a hawk whenever I entered that store. I felt so outraged and insulted that I started shopping elsewhere. Perhaps young mothers are a demographic known to shoplift?

But surely if you scan a certain product no matter how many of them you have, you have to scan each of it and you can see on the monitor if it's add up?

I'm not sure how this system works in Sainsbury, but for ie in Tesco it won't let you continue if you don't scan your product and just shove it on the bagging area.

I've always wondered, how does someone know if a poster is new? Is it then more likely the poster isn't genuine?

Pearlyqueen21 · 15/03/2023 10:07

If they rescanned the whole trolley, you should have got them to scan your Nectar card. That’s why you didn’t get the discounts - it was no longer in your handset 🤷🏼‍♀️ Lesson learned!

If you feel uncomfortable with their security measures, just stop using Scan & Go. It’s the price you pay for the convenience. It honestly isn’t personal!

Well this is a new variation on the regular "security guard was following me around" threads.
