Sainsburys think I’m a thief - AIBU?

Something really odd happened to me the other day and I want to see what others think of it. I’ve been shopping at sainsburys for over 3 years now using scan & go (extremely convenient!) Been selected for a random check maybe 3 or 4 times in all this time, all clear, no issues at all.
Recently I’ve noticed that every time I’m shopping the security guard seems to be following me. For instance last week I was looking for my DD’s formula on the shelf and when I turned around I noticed he walked right past me. I was the only person in that isle. Yesterday I was looking in the meat section and surprise surprise, he was there again. Now, having finished my shopping I went over to the self checkout till to pay and I suddenly get a message on my device saying “hold on, we just need to do a trolley check” - I thought okay, never mind, it happens. I suddenly notice the security guard talking to the guy who’s about to scan my shopping, they were having a random chat about something laughing. The guy comes over and says “oh today we need to scan 40 items” .. I thought whaaat? They usually scan 10max, where did 40 come from? (Unless I heard 40 but in reality he said 14, not sure now). Anyway, he starts scanning my shopping and then goes “oh shit sorry I think I’ve scanned the Maltesers twice, you’re gonna have to do a full trolley re scan now”. So I proceeded to a separate till where they scanned all my shopping again, the woman didn’t say anything at all, just apologised, I paid and that was it. When I got home I realised that my shopping ended up being £18 more expensive than what it said on the hand-held device, making me look like a thief? I did buy a lot of the same items twice so perhaps it didn’t register properly.
AIBU to think this whole experience was a bit strange?

If it's any consolation I c*ck up a lot of my posts with spelling and grammar myself - a combination of dyslexia, fat fingers, and a battle to the death with autocarrot.

I sympathise @OreganoOregano146 there's nothing worse than being in a full shop and being incorrectly accused of theft. It's mortifying.

I had it in my local Asda. Unbeknownst to me, when you buy clothes in the sale, our local store has a glitch which means sale items always set the alarms off. The security and staff know this.

However, as I was leaving one evening, it was packed. The alarm went off. I stood still and this huge fella comes over, grabs my trolley and drags it backwards. There was simply no need to need for him to behave that way, I made no attempt to leave the store and even if I had, it wasn't a door that led to the street, it's inside a complex.

Anyway, he then growls at me that I am "being detained" for the "purpose of a search due to suspected theft".

I have worked in retail over the years and knew 100% that what he had said was entirely made up and they have to call police to detain a suspected thief. So I said this and pointed out I wasn't a thief anyway.

This seemed to annoy him. "You're a smart Alec little cow aren't you" he responded. At that point, I told him he needed to call a supervisor over. He declined and shouted "thieves don't get to call supervisors." He clearly wanted to embarrass me and people were all looking. I tried to remain calm and not show my upset as I knew he was the type who would enjoy that.

I showed him I had a receipt, and he said it meant nothing as clearly I had attempted to steal something.

Luckily for me, a supervisor did walk over to see what was going on. She said to me "did you buy anything from the clothing sale" and I said yes why, she asked to see it and my receipt, had a quick glance through the rest and then said I could go.

I was livid, I had been spoken to like shit, embarrassed and called names by a male. I wanted an apology and his name and company but he told me to piss off.

I posted on a local group to warn others not to buy anything from the sale and the sheer amount of others treated like me was shocking. I was advised by two women though not to take it further via Asda as they had subsequently been given a ban from every Asda store despite not having stolen anything.

I won't buy from there now. It was the second poor incident with Asda and that was enough for me.

I would however hope you do walk back into your local store and point out their theft

If the facts had been made clear in the initial post, we would be less accusatory.

I've been around here long enough to know that you could have a written endorsement from God himself and still you'd be guilty according to the MN jury 😁

I popped into our local Tesco today. Overhead a staff member saying someone has just walked out with £43 worth of shopping on the quick pay. You would think there would be an alarm or something to alert staff.

And then I woke up...

starfishmummy · 11/10/2023 14:57

The sainsburys I use has just installed those one way entrance barriers and I'm suspecting that exit ones are about to follow.

How do you get out if you haven't bought anything? Do they oat you down or do a strip search??

Ptoh an aldi has just opened near me so I might go there more often. And incidentally my bags were kot checked on entry as a pp said they are.
