Amazon scam

chaosmaker · 13/03/2023 18:46

I received a gift voucher from the hated Amazon for xmas from a friend's mother. I went to buy items from that site and the total came to 2p below the value of the voucher. On going to checkout, the site asked me to put in MY card details despite them already having been paid more than the amount I wanted to spend.

Why is this legal?

AIBU to be angry about them wanting my card details when I wouldn't otherwise use that site?

Are you postage wasn't added taking the total over the value of the voucher?

UsherBobble · 13/03/2023 19:08

Are you sure that you selected that you wanted the balance to be deducted from the voucher? Was it a gift card? They usually give you this option

PacificallyRequested · 13/03/2023 19:14

Did you have an account with Amazon already? Or were you setting one up just to use the voucher? I think you need to provide card details to register an account.
In any case, it's hardly a scam.

Sockloon · 13/03/2023 19:18

I use Amazon nearly everyday, the hated Amazon what are you talking about?

Also how is this a scam?

Amazon customer service has always been fantastic for me, even giving me refunds two years down the line when a product has become faulty and the seller won't respond.

donttellmehesalive · 13/03/2023 19:20

You don't need card details if you're using a voucher, I've done it plenty of times.

Lockheart · 13/03/2023 19:20

I'm curious exactly what you think the scam is.

JuneBridie · 13/03/2023 19:21

yabu to call this thread “Amazon scam”, it isn’t, but there are many scammers using Amazon as a way to fleece people fraudulently way more worthy of the title. If you don’t like Amazon, don’t use it. Regift or sell the gift card if it bothers you that much.

WinterMusings · 13/03/2023 19:23

You can't go around accusing companies of scams Willy nilly

SchoolTripDrama · 13/03/2023 19:25

Wow this is some paranoia

HaveTheDayOff · 13/03/2023 19:26

What was the scam? Did they bill you twice or fail to take the funds from the gift card?

TimeForMeToF1y · 13/03/2023 19:27

You haven't explained what the scam is

Funny that I am an avid buyer on amazon, have been for many many years what are these so called scammers?
I have never met any and any time I have any issues amazon have been very helpful. As other PP have said Amazon customer service are the best I have ever come across, they always find in the buyers favour. There are some real odd balls on MN.

Amazon aren’t the scammers, I’m talking about fraudulent emails and phone calls claiming to be from Amazon 😑

Iluvteandbiscuits · 13/03/2023 19:30

So what's the scam? did you contact amazon? did they not deliver your tinfoil hat?

umpaumpajumps · 13/03/2023 19:32

My apologies then, always thought amazon is amazing for shopping. Their ethic's may be not so much, but it is what it is.

Sparklingmoonshine · 13/03/2023 19:35

I agree with the other comments - are you sure the gift voucher included vat/ postage etc ….?
if you really hate them- why did you not give the voucher to a friend/family member who does like them ?
I’ve used Amazon since the beginning & have found them to be one of the most dependable companies- customer service always helpful.
If the gift voucher covered the total cost you can opt not to have your card details on there. Hardly a scam !!!

Riapia · 13/03/2023 19:43

When someone asks for your bank account details over the internet it’s obviously a scam.

wordler · 13/03/2023 20:16

Had you already added the voucher number? Did the total checkout include postage?

Doesn't sound like a scam - you don't have to add your card details if you spend within the voucher.

Albiboba · 13/03/2023 20:24

You sound like the sort of person who hasn’t really had much exposure to ordering online.

NumberTheory · 13/03/2023 20:24

You should take a closer look at what's happening when you check out. In my experience, it is not standard practice for Amazon to require your card details if your purchase total is covered by a gift card balance.

It seems more likely there is some additional cost you aren't aware of. Did you inadvertently sign up for a subscription instead of purchasing as a one off? Are there shipping costs you haven't accounted for? Or additional fees because it's coming from overseas? Or is the gift card total actually less than you thought?

With sites you don't use often, especially big ones that do a lot of different things, it can be easy to overlook something that a more seasoned user might think obvious.

Reminds me of a dimbulb colleague who wanted to know her credit score but was horrified the site had asked for her bank details. How she expected the company to guess her credit rating without her providing any information remains a mystery.

LouLou198 · 13/03/2023 20:34

You need to register a card to open an Amazon account so you can order. What is the scam?

chaosmaker · 14/03/2023 01:10

I registered the gift card, had an amazon account years ago so have expired bank cards on it. The items ordered are enough to have free postage (I'm not stupid). The use gift balance is already ticked but it won't go through unless I register a bank card with them. As stated in my post the total is 2p less than the value of the balance which it seems I should have put in at the end rather than doing what the card said which was to register it to my account.
How do you even contact customer services? The only thing I could see was a link to their twitter help which got no reply.

On the amazon app go to Home Screen,
click on the bottom icon which looks like the top of a Lego man (2nd icon from left)
click on ‘your account’ at the top.
scroll down to customer services.
Click on contact us.

might be different if using the website. Hopefully someone else may know how to navigate the website.

Still not seeing what the scam is.
