To ask how your LO chicken pox started

DD has had a lot of exposure recently to chicken pox so we've been waiting to see if it appears. I know no one can really tell me if it will be Cp or not but just wondering how your LO's started. DD has had a temp all day but no sign of a cold or showing any other symptoms of another virus, just the temp, feeling tired and off her food. Wondering if this is going to be the start of it or if it will just be yet another bug!

One spot on the stomach was the first sign here. Not unwell till following day. Hope DD is ok or if she has it, it’s not a bad dose.

Dutch1e · 13/03/2023 18:31

In both cases I got a phone call that each of my kids' playmates had come down with chickenpox.

My eldest had a very slightly raised temp for one evening and no other symptoms. I wouldn't even have thought she'd had them except she was exposed again several times later and showed no symptoms.

My youngest also had a slightly elevated temp for a day then maybe a dozen spots with no itchiness.

So it's only anecdotal, but it can be very mild. My fingers are crossed that your DD also sails through with no trouble!

SparkleSpangle · 13/03/2023 18:34

One spot on her hairline followed by one on her cheek. Then all over her torso by bath time.

Peccary · 13/03/2023 18:35

Complained of a headache and the next day had a couple of spots on her back, progressed very quickly from there to all over her body. She actually never complained of being itchy and wasn't I'll at all so you can have a smooth ride with it

barbiedinosaur · 13/03/2023 18:36

Thanks all. Hoping it won't be but I won't know until the morning. Forgot to say the only other symptom she has complained of is a bad headache. She doesn't actually seem too unwell she's just not herself at all. I just hate the waiting!

The spots normally appear on the trunk of the body first if my memory serves me correctly .

MrsMartinRohde · 13/03/2023 18:42

Two or three little spots on his chest, noticed early evening. By bedtime it was unmistakably chicken pox. Next day he was covered

Libmama · 13/03/2023 18:44

My DS4 has just had it. We wouldn’t have known it was coming he wasn’t ill at all before the spots came out. Sunday and Monday he only had a handful of spots and was fine apart from not eating much. Tuesday he woke up covered and was slightly poorly, laid on the sofa most of the day, didn’t want to eat but no temp. Wednesday and Thursday a few more spots each day but each day much better in himself. Completely back to himself and no more spots by Friday. He’s all scabbed today and is going back to pre school tomorrow!!

DrunkenKoala · 13/03/2023 18:44

First day was just a spot or two and feeling fine in themselves. Both went onto be quite poorly - high temps, lethargic and off their food. With DD it was 9 days between first spot appearing and last spot scabbing over.

Lancrelady80 · 13/03/2023 19:36

Weds night/Thurs am...woken up 3am to ds vomiting.
Thurs...off his food, slept all day.
Fri...off his food but more himself. Unfortunately, back covered in chicken pox spots by time I got home.

I remember having chicken pox as a young child and mine followed a v similar pattern.

PercyPigInAWig · 13/03/2023 19:40

Not what you asked for OP but I had DC vaccinated against chicken pox to hopefully avoid them getting ill with it.
If they've escaped it this time you might want to look into it.

Merryoldgoat · 13/03/2023 19:41

Pretty much like that. Tired after school. Headache and low grade fever, a couple of spots in the morning.

Maybebabyno2 · 13/03/2023 19:41

No temp or anything at first, little spot on his groin (well under if you understand what I mean) which I totally missed. Phone call from cm that morning to go get him by the evening he had quite a few. Next morning absolutely covered!

Watto1 · 13/03/2023 19:42

One spot on his chest. I thought it was just a zit and sent him off to nurseryBlush. No mistaking it when I got him ready for bed that night. Chest and back absolutely plastered. He was fine in himself though.

DD on the other hand had been very grumpy all day and then 3 spots appeared on her forehead in the evening. At this point I was 99% certain it was chicken pox but it was confirmed in the morning. Covered from head to toe.

barbiedinosaur · 13/03/2023 19:56

Looks like it's a sickness bug. She's just woken up and been sick all over her new bunk bed (with her DB on the bottom bunk so he got covered too Confused). Wish me luck, my worst fear is sickness bugs!!

My two had it late 2021 and the NHS advises the symptoms can appear 1 to 3 weeks after you have actually caught it. This was about right for my two, DS1 had spots appear and about 10 days later spots appeared on DS2. They were both under the weather for a few days but the oral antihistamine solution worked wonders and they never really itched/scratched - a world away from my childhood memories of cold calamine lotion!
Sounds like it could be brewing - you'll know for sure one way or other soon!

Don't relax just yet. That's what we thought ds had!

Poor DH had to deal with it, the smell turned my stomach so badly I nearly added to the mess.

barbiedinosaur · 13/03/2023 20:08

@Lancrelady80 my DH has just had to do the same! I'm fine looking after the little ones when they are ill but I can't do the clean up of big messes like that, I'd end up just adding to it!

My DS had exactly the same symptoms.

Came home from school with a headache, was sick. Fell asleep on sofa. Didn't eat. Woke through the night with a temp. 4am 'Mum my necks itchy' - oh. 3/4 spots on his neck.

My other DS in comparison showed no of a of illness and the spots just appeared. He had a temp between 24-48 hours after the first spot.

Hope she's okay x

redblonde · 13/03/2023 20:24

My daughter's first symptom was febrile convulsions - most terrifying morning ever! Hospital could find no reason for them until after the second fit they discovered a spot on her thigh. Good luck.

Cati482 · 13/03/2023 20:25

My two have both just recovered from chicken pox. My eldest started with a spot just behind her ear, was also complaining of aches and had a raised temperature. By morning, she had spots all over her back and chest, then her arms, legs and face about a day later.
My youngest started with one in the middle of her forehead, no other symptoms and only ever got spots on her upper chest and back.
If your little one does go on to develop chicken pox, try some Poxclin mousse, it was much kinder on their skin than calamine lotion. 😊

Not sure if anyone is still on this thread but just to update, after checking Dd constantly for spots it's turned out to be my DS that has woken up with them this morning Hmm. He literally showed no signs of being poorly or anything but has got a slight temp this morning and about 8 spots so far. Any tips on the best way to manage them?

DS (then 3) had a little red mark on his neck one evening that was still there the next morning, no other signs. We thought nothing of it and sent him to preschool. Got a phone call an hour later to say he was covered in spots and could I pick him up. He was riddled with them but they didn't bother him at all.

Exactly two weeks later, DD (then 8) came home from Brownies and I noticed a tiny red spot on her leg. We were more suspicious the second time, obviously! She woke up the next morning absolutely covered, and they drove her nuts.

Get some Poxclin.

We were on holiday. She was two and didn’t eat her tea the evening before the spots came out , that was definitely a portent of doom as she never refused food!
