2 year old sitting on an adult sized stool

Gettissuesgotissues · 13/03/2023 13:21

Would you consider this safe? Husband thinks it's fine, I think it's dangerous at the dinner table, which is over a very hard floor.

YABU - It's fine

YANBU - it's dangerous

I know 2 2yo and both sit on an adult dining chair to eat

Coffeeandchocs · 13/03/2023 13:25

I think 2 is the perfect age to start doing this. Our two year old now sits on an adult chair at the dining table when we eat and loves it.
If you approach every situation your toddler is in with worrying about danger, you’ll never let them down a slide, learn how to climb and go down stairs etc. Most physical, gross motor skills a toddler learns will have an element of risk to them, you have to let them learn.

hopeishere · 13/03/2023 13:28

Do you mean like a bar stool?

Sirzy · 13/03/2023 13:29

A chair is fine but not a stool

Albiboba · 13/03/2023 13:30

What do you mean by an ‘adult stool’? Like a high stool or just chair height?

I think plenty of 2 year olds sit on a normal chair, maybe with something to lift them up a bit if they are smaller.

I don’t know that many 2 year olds who are happy in a highchair to be honest.

Namechanger355 · 13/03/2023 13:30

Not stool

chair is more than fine - good habit to learn

why not just swap stool for a chair?

The OP has said 'stool' which would therefore have no back on it and potentially could be higher than a chair.

I wouldn't, 2 year olds are wriggly and there's too much potential to fall backwards

NewmummyJ · 13/03/2023 13:31

Depends on the child and the level of supervision they are getting whilst doing it.

Geranium1984 · 13/03/2023 13:32

Depends how high the stool is.
Our 2yo sits (or kneels) on an adult dining chair.
I probably wouldn't trust him on a high breakfast bar type stool as he gets up and down like a yoyo.

Axahooxa · 13/03/2023 13:34

Not safe. Highchair is better- you can then use for activities too, so they can reach the table properly.

Even if it’s a stool, a two year old is perfectly capable of sitting on a stool!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2023 13:35

High stool like a bat stool so you'd have to plonk them on, no.

Low but backless, possibly but depends in the kid

Normal dining chair? Yes if they're high enough to reach

Gettissuesgotissues · 13/03/2023 13:37

I'm fine with him in a chair with a back, this stool is high (although not barstool height), with no back, and he's not constantly supervising him. I worry he will fall backwards.

Depends on the child.

I’ve said previously I see no problem with the child sitting on the stool, now you’ve said without supervision my view on that changes.
Maybe compromise; you’d be ok with him using the stool to sit as long as someone is with him.

TheOverlord · 13/03/2023 13:43

This many people are worried about a two year old spontaneously falling backwards? This hasn’t been a concern with my 3yo for a long time…and it’s only a concern with DD because she’s seven months old. Do 2yos usually just fall backwards for no reason? I think a stool is perfectly safe.

NurseCranesRolodex · 13/03/2023 13:43

Chair with back is safe but stool on slidey floor probably too high for child to negotiate and no purchase if they lean back.

FlounderingFruitcake · 13/03/2023 13:44

If it has no back and isn’t closely supervised then I agree with you.

My 2YO eats at our kitchen island regularly but our stools have sides and backs so it’s essentially a highchair without a strap!

felixfeline · 13/03/2023 13:44

I have a 2 year old and would not allow this

TheOrigRights · 13/03/2023 14:01

How 2? Just or nearly 3?

Actually, I don't think my answer will change. I think if they can't plant their feet on the floor or on a foot rest/bar, then they to be on a chair with a back.

I wouldn't be comfortable on a stool where my feet were just dangling. I think a child that age CAN sit on a stool, but I wouldn't choose it.

I think it's more that they might get distracted or animated/excited and forget - lean back and not be able to rectify themselves quickly enough. It's not worth the risk over a hard floor.

loverofpants · 13/03/2023 14:19

Depends on the child surely? My DD is nearly 2.5 and I wouldn't put her on a stool as she's too wriggly and can't sit still. I rarely put her on a chair she still has the highchair. Other toddlers her age I know are much better/safer at this.

Yes or kick/push feet forward against the table and topple backwards

We used the trip trapp chairs which were a nice compromise between high chair which mine found too constricting and an adult chair which wasn't the right height

They don't fall backwards for no reason. They fall backwards because they have little regard for safety and are wriggling/messing about etc. Just like they don't fall forwards for no reason, but they do fall forwards far more frequently than older children or adults...because they're running/trip over their feet/don't have complete balance yet as they're still top heavy etc.

purpledalmation · 13/03/2023 14:30

Of course it's not safe. It's a long way to fall for a toddler.
