To pick up guide dog's poo?

Poopscoops · 13/03/2023 10:19

I've just picked up a stranger's guide dog's poo. Just wondering if other's think I should have to do this. I don't. I know it's not legally required for a visually impaired owner to do it if they are unable, but why don't they make their dog go at home before heading out and about and leaving poo on a public path? My dog isn't an assistance dog but I have trained her to go for a wee or poo on demand. I thought that's how guide dogs were trained.

Is this how far we've descended?

This reminds me of that episode of Friends when Phoebe was possessed by the old lady ghost who wouldn't leave her alone until she saw the lesbian wedding and said "I've seen it all now" and promptly passed to the other side.

I think I'm there with shit I've seen on mumsnet. How bad does humanity have to be to resent picking up shit from a service dog? Honestly @Poopscoops if you live in West Yorkshire, next time just DM me and I'll pick it up without fuss.

The real question is why doesn't every dog owner train their dogs to only shit in their own garden?

Do people only ever shit in their own home?
If you got to go, you got to go.

WontTheRealSlimSheldyPlsFuckoff · 13/03/2023 23:03

Indeed xeno

And aye Casilero - I hear ye.

People don't shit in the street.

Well, not round here. Admittedly I can't speak for your particular neighbourhood.

People are capable of thinking to hold it in, and maybe rush home. Dogs are not blessed with the same thought process. My own elderly dog will look me in he eye and do her business in the house.

There is a chap who lives in my street who shits in the local park. No idea why.

pinkpotatoez · 13/03/2023 23:09

How do you expect the blind person to see if their dog has gone to the toilet before they go out 😂

MidgeHardcastle · 13/03/2023 23:14

Does anyone else read these batshit threads and immediately think I can't wait to see the reaction on Reddit?

Well humans tend to have access to toilets at work, in restaurants, pubs, friends homes. Generally, I prefer to take my morning poo in my own bathroom, but not gonna lie, I have on occasion used the toilets at work for more than a number one 😱

No because I didn't realise that was a thing. Is this a thing? If so, I'm in for a treat 🍿

@Aganta
I seem to recall when the public loos were closed during covid a whole load of people did indeed shit in the street, and in people's front gardens...

Summerfun54321 · 13/03/2023 23:49

What are you shocked about? That inconsiderate dog owners exist or that one of them happens to also be blind? There are so many inconsiderate dog owners lining the pavements with shit, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that one of them is blind.

MidgeHardcastle · 13/03/2023 23:50

@Casilero there might be other MN sub Reddits but the one I enjoy is called MN trolls

They certainly did not where I live.

Often text off to Reddit to see if my spider senses are right.

Not fake. I'm just obviously a terrible person 🙈 thread has made me think though. I've taken it all on board and I'll work on it.

Yes you are. Its an awful thing to think but to actually post about it???

Where do you people live that the streets are "lined with dogshit"? Only on mumsnet do I see thread after thread after thread with people complaining about dogs shitting everywhere.

I do have a dog, but I pick up after him, as do all the other dog owners I know. I don't even live in a particularly salubrious neighbourhood. Yet, I genuinely do not see dog shit in the parks and paths around me ever. Yet, every day on mumsnet it seems there's another thread with someone complaining you're plagued by these terrible owners leaving piles all over the place. Even the blind are getting in on it now it would seem! Where do you live that it's such a problem? I live in a town with loads of cannabis farms, county lines, knife crime, anti social behaviour and even WE don't have a problem with dog shit! Or maybe we just can't smell it over the cannabis farms 🤷‍♀️

How can it ever be unreasonable to pick up dog shit, whether it be your dog's or another's?

Utterly weird thread.

Interesting, I’ve lived in Scotland, all around London and now in the north in a variety of neighbourhood some more middle class than others, some less so but rarely anywhere super rough and there is often dog poo on pavements or on grass. I wouldn’t say it’s everywhere but for example on my short ten minute walk today I seen a bit in the corner of one pavement. Usually if I walk more than ten minutes I’ll see it somewhere.

PrinnyPree · 14/03/2023 00:49

I once helped a blind person pick up their dogs poo because the dog was caught short. He obviously couldn't see and was struggling to bag it and the dog was stood on the road (unbeknownst to him) whilst he was picking it up so I stepped in to help. He told me they are trained to go at home and that was only the second time in her life she'd been caught short.

I'm glad this thread has taught you that disabled people aren't just lazy and entitled and are in fact just disabled, and attempting to pick up poo like the blind person I met could result in them putting themselves in an extremely vulnerable position.

You did a good deed OP (as long as you weren't audibly tutting), just be proud of your community spirit for picking up a poo when someone else couldn't and leave it at that. 😊

TaunterOfWomenInGeneralSaysSayonarastu · 14/03/2023 00:52

Oh sod off with the virtue signalling, you can't even muster the saccharine phrasing to accompany it, & how the fuck do you reckon a blind person can pick up any dog poo their dog does "at home"?

The right thing to do is pick up the poo, & not bleat on about it.

Maybe I genuinely don't notice it. I do walk around a bit with my dog, plus a bit through work. I'm going to pay more attention, but I have looked the last 3 or 4 days in particular, due to the amount of posts I've seen on here.

Perhaps, I've been treading it all over the place and I need new glasses!

XenoBitch · 13/03/2023 22:33

No, I am not going to pick up a guide dog poo. I would never get anything done, as there is a ton of poo just left where I live. Do guide dog poo's have a little flag stuck in them, so you can tell them apart from normal dog poo?

Is all well and good training your dog to go on command. Wait until they are in their senior years.

There aren't that many Guide Dogs - they're really not an important cause of the dog shit problem (which I agree has worsened)

You know it's a Guide Dog's poo if you see it being done by a dog in its working harness. Or might possibly suspect its one if you see one regularly in your area
