To ask how to stop or ease coughing ?

From about 7PM this evening DH has been coughing constantly with no breaks in between. Am assuming it's covid but have no tests available.
Any tips on how to help ease it? I know he can't help it but it's been going on for hours and I am ready to sleep out in the garage....

Honey in hot water worked for me

I swear by Vicks on the soles of your feet and wear socks. He will not cough through the night. I promise!

DashboardConfessional · 11/03/2023 22:18

Hot bath or shower to loosen some gunk. Covonia if one of you can get to a late-opening supermarket. Lots of warm drinks. Whisky!

Can you tell I have the same?! It's not Covid though. I got hayfever symptoms and then what seems to be a chest infection.

JennyDarlingRIP · 11/03/2023 22:18

Honey and lemon in hot water and a humidifier if you have one.

modgepodge · 11/03/2023 22:20

Pholcodeine linctus cough medicine actually suppresses the cough. I think it’s the codeine that does it, so if you have any cocodomal that might work.
disclaimer: I am not a doctor!

I was going to advise this too. It's the only thing that works for me.

Weirdly ice water helps

Tattooname · 11/03/2023 22:29

I find that Halls Soothers (with the liquid inside) work wonders to stop those awful unending dry, tickly coughs.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/03/2023 22:30

Sookimg on lozenges pretty much constantly.

My grannies have both had thi ls recently but it wasn't covid just another bad virus.

Readyforspringtime · 11/03/2023 22:42

The first time my horrible cough stopped for 30 minutes straight (after a week of relentless coughing) was during a reflexology session as she worked on the diaphragm area. I felt better from then on and the coughing reduced, all gone 2 days later. Probably to do with the relaxation.

This!!! Really helped me. The black currant flavour is yummy!

Also a humidifier helps. Ginger tea with honey works wonders as well!!!

Yes, I forgot to say that for some reason the blackcurrant ones seem to work best! They seem to have more liquid than the cherry ones.

Just fyi. Pholcodine is being withdrawn from sale in the EU. It’s been identified that use within 12 months of a general anaesthetic increases the risk of anaphlatic response.

HarrietSchulenberg · 11/03/2023 23:08

Years ago my GP told me to take honey to soothe my sore throat, honey and the juice of 1/2 fresh lemon in hot water plus 2 paracetamol to ease flu symptoms, and lots of water to over hydrate myself to ease a cough. Works for me every time.

Yes, it's the only actual medicine that works, everything else is just soothing.

WhereYouLeftIt · 11/03/2023 23:12

Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam. Covonia does loads of different cough bottles, but that's the only version I find of any use. It suppresses your cough rather than coating the throat to make it more comfortable. I was coughing so much my ribs were hurting and it was exhausting me, so I really needed to suppress it. It doesn't completely suppress it, but it does enough!

It's not off-the-shelf. It doesn't need a prescription, but you do have to ask the pharmacist for it.

I was advised to take the dose in twice that volume of hot water and down it in one. Has worked well for me.

PuppyMonkey · 11/03/2023 23:13

Another vote for Vicks on the soles of feet and socks. It’s the magic cure.

Cyantist · 11/03/2023 23:13

Opioids are the only things that really suppress a cough. He can take codeine

Barnstormaway787 · 11/03/2023 23:19

It may not be this but don’t rule out whooping cough op. It’s known as the 100-day cough in some European countries and adults often don’t have the whoop bit. The prolonged coughing bouts are really awful.

My grandma had this home remedy in which she added ground poppy seeds to a cup of hot milk. She swore by it for night time cough and uninterrupted sleep.

Poppy seeds have codeine and morphine in them!!!

Whenever I get a bad cough, it can persist for weeks. There is only one thing that works for me: Jakeman's cough sweets. The honey & lemon ones in the yellow packet are nicest. They don't cure the cough per se, but I never have to cough when I have one of these in my gob.

Abraxan · 12/03/2023 00:50

When I had laryngitis my Gp told me that codeine was a good cough suppressant. I already have on prescription in as painkiller meds so use that.

Otherwise, sleep propped up a bit, Vicks or similar, nasal spray if you have one, honey and lemon etc.

We've all had coughs recently. Hasn't been covid for the last few bouts.

bridgetreilly · 12/03/2023 00:54

Iced water or warm drinks.

JarByTheDoor · 12/03/2023 01:00

Be careful with codeine if there's any actual gunk needing to be coughed up. Codeine does really work and suppresses the cough, which means that taking codeine then lying down in bed for eight hours can let your lungs fill up with goo, and you wake up struggling to get a breath. I made this mistake on a camping trip once, which was… not fun. Obviously if it's just hacking away in a constant dry coughcoughcough, there's no rattle and nothing's coming up, then it can be good for getting a few hours of the rest that you need to get better.

Amrapaali · 12/03/2023 01:49

Spoonfuls of pure honey. Preferably Manuka.

But I think he should go to the GP just in case. My daughter had a similar cough in the summer. Constant with no let up. It was a chest infection
