Yahoo needs to fuck off and die

How the hell do you get Yahoo off your computer? Every google search is reverting to stupid useless Yahoo again. It isn't in my settings as a search engine, google is my default. It isn't downloaded as an extension. Clean up hasn't got rid of it

I didn't know it was possible to hate a search engine so much. Every time this happens my computer search becomes unusable until I manage to get rid of it, which takes hours, and I have never found the same trick works twice.

Any suggestions? I am desperate to get rid of this Yahoo malware for once and for all

It's not that - there's a nasty wee bastard browser hijacker around. Installs itself as an extension, changes setting so your browser thinks it's managed by an organisation. First symptom wasbit changing my search engine, then started passing my clicks through other pages.

Nightmare to remove, eventual solution included registry edits

Ah I see! I knew there was a horrible browser hijacker around hence my answer above but I didn’t realise that was one of the symptoms.

I didn't think anybody had used Yahoo since 2009. I remember Yahoo Answers, I wonder what happened to that

Click the 3 dots top right hand side.
Click Settings
On the left menu click Search Engine
"Search engine used in the address bar." - Select Google

that is always set to google

Have you checked if it is showing up under Add & Remove Programs? If so you can remove it from there. Assuming this is a personal computer as said.

thanks for that suggestion - I have just checked there, it is not there

Haven’t read all the replies, but sometimes it’s the actual antivirus who changes the setting. In my case, McAffee seemed to be at war with Google search

o, that's interesting - maybe its that

This happens with my lap top too and drives me mad! I have repeatedly set the default to chrome but suddenly discover myself back on yahoo. I've added google to my bookmarks bar 😂

I'll try that, if it can get me straight back to google!

If you go to your browser settings does it say "managed by your organisation"

I don't think so - my default browser is google, unless browser settings is different to default browser

It's easy to do. Some posters have mentioned it & here's a link that explains further: www.howtogeek.com/769001/how-to-remove-yahoo-search-from-google-chrome/amp/

(Also re work / personal computer it shouldn't matter. It's not usually admin controlled so you can sort it out yourself).

This is how to remove Yahoo from being my default search engine, or from being in my list of search engines, but the trouble is, it isn't there to remove

When you have chrome open, click on the 3 dots on the very right hand side (just under the X), then look at the very bottom of the menu. It might say something like "managed by your organisation"

Also go to 3 dots, settings, extensions and take a screenshot of the extensions and post it here - some of us might be able to spot the issue

maybe that's when it went rogue!

sounds like I should at least be grateful I am not stuck with Bing!

thanks for this, is Mcafee not enough then?

Probably mcafee causing it in the first place by changing your default search engine.

EVHead · 10/03/2023 16:45

McAfee sets your search engine to Yahoo. Drives me crazy. I reset it to Google then the next day it’s back to Yahoo. I now have Google on my favourites bar. Fuck Yahoo.

It doesn't say "Managed by your organisation. I am attempting to add a screen shot of "extensions" but there are only two things there.

This must be why it happens then, because I do have Mcafee. I will put google in my favourite bar, if that is a way of getting round it, thank you

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/03/2023 16:50

Looks like it's not the same version, blessedly (it was a proper arse to remove, none of the remover tools could do it)

You could try just disabling the mcafee extension

I will try that, do I just switch it off on that toggle thing?

Thank you for your help, by the way

Yep, it's this. I changed had to change the McAfee settings to stop this. Can't remember which one though

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/03/2023 17:29

Open Chrome
Click 3 dots on the top right
Click Settings
Go to the left side and select Search engine
change the Secure search to Google in "Search engine used in the address bar"

Then watch out every time Mcafee attempts to get it changed again (pop up window)

Or uninstall the entire fucking thing and use something else.

Close and open Chrome. Search and check the changes.

Oh, and never, ever type mcafee into the search bar because that'll still have the nosy fuckers getting involved - to find a mention of them without them getting involved, you have to type mcafee mcafee (bit like Candyman, Candyman in the mirror) and then pick the bottom drodown where it's being searched by Google instead of those busybodying bastards.

You certainly DO NOT want bloody Bing

Neither of you even know what annoyance is until you've had all your search settings invaded by Yandex.ru.

Mummysgonetobed · 10/03/2023 17:36

It’s McAffee causing the issue. Absolute pain in the arse. I just have google as a favourite also as no matter how many times I change the default it changes the next day. Drives me insane.
