‘We was’

Arghhh, is it just me noticing SO many people now saying/ typing ‘we was?!’

I’m on so many FB baby groups and I swear every person on there says ‘we was in the living room’ ‘we was scared’ etc. It absolutely drives me insane, why is is it so prevalent all of a sudden?

No idea, but it grates on me too!

Sux2buthen · 08/03/2023 17:11

It's been like that for ages. I notice but I don't think much of it, I'm sure everyone's annoying in their own way

CamoFlamingo · 08/03/2023 17:12

I hate it too. Urgh.

LisaVanderpump1 · 08/03/2023 17:14

Hate it so much! Along with a new "trend" of saying "myself" instead of just "me".

EmmaDilemma5 · 08/03/2023 17:16

YANBU! My partner always says "I SEE that happen" etc and I hate it! It's saw!

He's actually very clever but was raised in a family with poor vocab and grammar. Old habits die hard I suppose.

AllOfThemWitches · 08/03/2023 17:18

Yeah that and 'I seen' wtf? It sounds so stupid.

Oddbutnotodd · 08/03/2023 17:18

You only have to watch the Apprentice….

Womblemumma · 08/03/2023 17:18

Seriously awful. Makes my toes curl up. It’s as bad as worster… it’s just worst, ffs.

GlassBunion · 08/03/2023 17:19

Pisses me right off.

There will be someone along, in a minute, who'll proudly say that its 'dialect,' but I'd love to know of an English teacher who'll teach that.

AuntieJoyce · 08/03/2023 17:19

Is it not an Essex thing? it’s the one thing I notice in speech when someone comes from that area.

never hear it up north

Reddahlias · 08/03/2023 17:21

That sounds SO wrong..!Confused

SarahAndQuack · 08/03/2023 17:23

Happy to be of service, @GlassBunion.

I can't tell - do you mean you don't believe it's dialect?

The dialect quirk that grates on me is 'ent' (as in 'you ent getting any'). DP says it when she has been with her family a lot and somehow I always get the impression that it brings out the anger from her childhood.

thisplaceisweird · 08/03/2023 17:23

I think it's regional. My midlands friend is forever making the same grammatical errors

Walterwhiteswifey · 08/03/2023 17:25

Instantly makes the person saying it look dim and not exactly classy. I see it on here all the time too.

DashboardConfessional · 08/03/2023 17:25

Same as "I done it." Did. Or have done. Pick one.

DemonSpawn · 08/03/2023 17:26

Where has everyone went? Lol

SarahAndQuack · 08/03/2023 17:26

This is interesting, IME.www.bl.uk/british-accents-and-dialects/articles/grammatical-variation-across-the-uk

I absolutely love regional differences. I work with someone who not only says 'we was' but also 'missen' for 'myself' and 'thissen' for 'yourself'.

Zaliea · 08/03/2023 17:26

Yeah, I speak like that casually. I know it's incorrect.

"We was there yesterday"
"I seen him the other day"

I wouldn't write like that formally or speak like that to anybody other than my friends. I received A*s in English Lit and Lang GCSE and have a degree, it just comes out sometimes with certain people. A tone switch or something, idk.

Zaliea · 08/03/2023 17:28

I also use "I done it already".

I'm not sure it's dialect for me. I grew up in a home county, now in London.

bigbluebus · 08/03/2023 17:29

@AuntieJoyce My DH is from Essex and definitely doesn't speak like that!

DashboardConfessional · 08/03/2023 17:30

That's not incorrect though. It's "My sen" and "Your sen" which comes from Middle English "selven".

SomersetONeil · 08/03/2023 17:30

‘Them’ instead of ‘those’ annoys me. Pass me them oranges.

I have to admit, all of the inaccuracies mentioned on this thread only seem to be said by British (Isles) people - ironically, you don’t hear people from other English-speaking countries say them.

DashboardConfessional · 08/03/2023 17:31

(Sorry, Yorkshirewoman and language nerd!)

LakeTiticaca · 08/03/2023 17:33

YABU. It's a regional thing . A lot of folk in the North say we was , or them instead of they .

superplumb · 08/03/2023 17:33

Yes!! My mother in law speaks like this ( uneducated though) so does my husband ( grew up in Luton). Whenever he says this to my children I shout were not was.! Thankfully my children don't say it!
Oh, another one...that'll learn him..wtf. that'll teach him!
