‘We was’

Arghhh, is it just me noticing SO many people now saying/ typing ‘we was?!’

I’m on so many FB baby groups and I swear every person on there says ‘we was in the living room’ ‘we was scared’ etc. It absolutely drives me insane, why is is it so prevalent all of a sudden?

Am I weird? I can cope with these, it doesn't really bother me and I do speak correctly but for some reason when someone is spelling P phonetically and they say Papa (pu parrrr) in a really posh accent it drives me nuts, really grates for some reason 😂

PuddlesPityParty · 08/03/2023 18:47

Fgs get a life 😂 it’s called a colloquialism

SatInMySpottyOnesie · 08/03/2023 18:47

“Needs gone” grates on me
just like the H - Aitch not Haitch thing

“I aren’t” - is a dialect example - Hull
as is “yous” - Liverpool

“We was” northern? I’m
a northern girl and have never regularly heard it
IMO it’s just lazy, bad grammar

cocksstrideintheevening · 08/03/2023 18:49

Makes people sound thick. Can't tolerate it. H does it with his football crowd. I walk away.

WhenDovesFly · 08/03/2023 18:54

Yes, these all wind me up too.

I'll add those that write "his" instead of "he is" or "he's".

i also read a post on MN earlier where the poster had twice written "I aren't".

Is it a Londoner thing?

Gloriousgardener11 · 08/03/2023 18:58

'I was sat'
Instead of 'I was sitting'
This is used SO much these days I don't think people realise it's incorrect !

Slimmer2018 · 08/03/2023 18:59

The worst thing i hear since moving ‘down south’ is ‘off of’ ie I bought this off of Amazon …. Grrr

darjeelingrose · 08/03/2023 18:59

It's not as annoying as people who say "these ones". It's these. I'd like these. Not these ones. I think this battle is lots though.

poetryandwine · 08/03/2023 19:00

I’m with @LisaVanderpump1 . ‘Do you want a lift with Karen and myself?’ drives me spare. A surprising number of otherwise well spoken people say this, perhaps because they are not confident of the correct form ‘Do you want a lift with Karen and me?’

Wasn’t it Michael Gove who brought reflexive pronouns back into the curriculum? I have heard him make this mistake on television several times. It is pretentious

I am fine with all the other mistakes cited here; they are more natural. I don’t want to make people self conscious or to lose dialects. I agree that an effort should be made to use proper grammar in educational settings

Slimmer2018 · 08/03/2023 19:00

Actually what would be worse is ‘ I brought this off of amazon’

ApplePippa · 08/03/2023 19:00

LuluBlakey1 · 08/03/2023 18:32

The examples you give are dialect because of the area they come from where they have developed over centuries of usage and the sound of the regional accent. 'We was' said by so many today is just ignorance. The one that grates on me is 'I aksed'

Not sure it's as simple as that.

I'm from East Kent, and growing up in the 70s / 80s I remember many people saying "we was" across all age ranges, including elderly people. It's not new.

Interesting article here:

thisplaceisweird · 08/03/2023 17:23

I think it's regional. My midlands friend is forever making the same grammatical errors

Mmmmm...don't think so, it's just piss poor grammar.

Arrocahar23 · 08/03/2023 19:04

It’s really fick.

Arrocahar23 · 08/03/2023 19:05

It’s a Laaaandaaan fing.

Exactly!

redrovers · 08/03/2023 19:06

The other one is come instead of came. And I don't mean in the sexual sense ☺️

As in "my mum come home from the shops" - it sounds sooo thick!

Ellie56 · 08/03/2023 19:06

The number of times I see "could of","would of " and "should of" drives me nuts.

Aaargh!

Led9519 · 08/03/2023 19:07

Was and done I’d annoying but language moves on so there we go.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/03/2023 19:07

SomersetONeil · 08/03/2023 17:30

‘Them’ instead of ‘those’ annoys me. Pass me them oranges.

I have to admit, all of the inaccuracies mentioned on this thread only seem to be said by British (Isles) people - ironically, you don’t hear people from other English-speaking countries say them.

Ooo I don't even say me... I'd say 'pass us them'

Rocketsmocket · 08/03/2023 19:08

It’s regional I think. It’s drives me insane. Which is a shame as it’s quite prevalent where I live currently. I have to grit my teeth when I hear it.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/03/2023 19:10

neilyoungismyhero · 08/03/2023 19:03

Mmmmm...don't think so, it's just piss poor grammar.

It isn't though. Because though I say it, I wouldn't write it.

Siameasy · 08/03/2023 19:14

Omg “needs gone” is the absolute worst. Needs+past participle needs to end asap.

I’m from London but now live in the S E and I’ve noticed “he’s” used a lot in text and speech instead of his.

Obv you’re and your wind me up. If someone gets them wrong I don’t think we can get along 🎵

Yes. As I posted earlier: unless someone sat you there, you were sitting

maddiemookins16mum · 08/03/2023 19:17

I hate it. I hear people at work on the phone asking questions of our customers ‘where was you?’ instead of ‘where were you living then?’ etc

Sometimes I can’t help myself say ‘WERE, WERE’ out loud 🤭🤭
