To want help figuring out where in the world this is?

Anyone bored, got an interest in travel and likes google-sleuthing?

Some of you might have seen social media ads for Journee - a travel firm that books holidays and short breaks based on your preferences, but don't tell you the destination. The idea is you find out where you're going when you get to the airport.

Just out of curiosity I asked them for a trip proposal - which to does sound really good and well matched with my preferences! But I haven't actually got the time or budget to book a trip right now.

So I've no way to find out where the trip is to, and I'd love to know! I reckon with the mumsnet hivemind we could figure it out with the info provided. Completely trivial really, but I know I'm not the only one who likes a good googling challenge.

What I know is:

1-3 hours flight, flying from Luton at 6:30am on 30th Mar, returning Gatwick at 10:50pm 2nd April. Average temp around 15C

Destination is coastal - described as "rugged" "remote old world charm" "coastal vistas", with hiking along a scenic coastal path and a boat trip to hidden caves and coves. But close to an "iconic city" which will be part of the trip.

Base will be a town, arriving there (from the airport?) by train on a "scenic journey"

The country is described as a "culinary superpower".

I figured I could narrow it down then work it out based on the flight times provided? My first guess was the Costa Brava (foodie, coastal hikes, close to an iconic city in Barcelona) but I think probably too obvious (they make a thing out of not sending you to places "like Paris or Venice") and I can't make the flights add up.

Italy fits the "culinary superpower" description, but I'm not sure where it would be.

Any ideas mumsnet?

My first thought was Majorca. Palma would fit the bill for the iconic city.
Possibly staying the West Coast as you reach Port De Soller by train and the caves at Andraxt are pretty famous too.
Just over a 2 hour flight from the U.K.
Culinary superpower might rule it out but Spanish tapas is amazing & Paella 🥘 is amazing.

ChilliBandit · 08/03/2023 14:21

It’s Faro, Portugal. Fly out with Ryanair, fly back with EasyJet. Times match exactly.

Ridikulus · 08/03/2023 14:22

Faro and the Algarve would be my guess too

KrisAkabusi · 08/03/2023 14:22

Beaten to it. It's definitely Faro based on flights. Fits the rugged coastal description perfectly as well.

Circleoffifths · 08/03/2023 14:25

Ooo, interesting. I would have guessed San Sebastian.

journeyofsanity · 08/03/2023 14:29

How do you know what to pack if you don't know where you are going?

Hatehairdressers · 08/03/2023 14:30

Oh you made that FAR to easy! But thank you.

And does to be fair look like a trip I would really enjoy so well done Journee for the suggestion.

How irritating that you are flying back to a different airport than you start from. Late at night too so public transport won’t be that easy, especially if there is a flight delay!

Ridikulus · 08/03/2023 14:34

If it is faro it's a 2 hour flight. Portugal is beautiful, the food is out of the world and the people are really lovely. It's one of the best countries I've visited, you're very lucky if it is there you're off to!

Pinkywoo · 08/03/2023 14:36

I think it's Pisa, the flight to Faro is at 6.40, Pisa is 6.30. Also I've never heard Portugal described as a culinary superpower.

Doggydooda · 08/03/2023 14:37

My first thought was Portugal but I wasn’t massively impressed with their culinary cuisine !

Actually I think you are right!

Tapenade · 08/03/2023 14:40

I was thinking somewhere near Cinque Terre from the description but no idea if the flights work

ChilliBandit · 08/03/2023 14:41

@Doggydooda - I could easily live off Pastel de Nata so it’s a culinary power house to me Grin

veganmayo · 08/03/2023 14:44

Sicily

Hatehairdressers · 08/03/2023 15:25

I did see a 6:30am flight to Pisa, but from Pisa where would you be heading with a rugged coastline of caves and coves?

OP posts:
Pinkywoo · 08/03/2023 16:42

This is the nearest seaside to Pisa, looks pretty rugged to me!

Aww you don't get a surprise now :(

thesonicoscillator · 08/03/2023 17:33

Fly into Pisa for Cinque Terre, and the temperature is right too, but it might be even warmer as it's already around 17°c here in North Italy.

Hatehairdressers · 08/03/2023 18:18

Just to be clear I’m NOT actually going on this trip, I was just curious where I’d been recommended.

I wish I was because cinque terre would be dreamy! I didn’t realise it was so close to Pisa, I hadn’t a quick Google of the coast near Pisa and it didn’t look very inspiring so I ruled it out.

But yes I am certain that is it! All adds up!

I want to go now! 😂

This sounds like so much fun! Shame they don’t do kids under 13 but I may have to do the questionnaire anyway for destination inspiration

ghislaine · 08/03/2023 19:30

Trieste? Fly to Venice and then train to Trieste? My absolute favourite city in Italy.

PicaK · 08/03/2023 19:34

Journee looks fantastic. Has anyone been?

GreenSeaGlass · 08/03/2023 19:36

Polignano A Mere, Italy. Nearest cities are Bari and Naples and is on the train route. Looks a beautiful place full of old charm and rugged coastlines. You can also take a boat trip advertising ‘caves and hidden coves’.

No but it has a 94% 5* rating on trust pilot. The reviews suggest it's pricey but well worth the money
