Putting a Landseer painting in a modern bathroom

I was hoping to do my main bathroom out in Victorian style (black and white flooring, roll top bath etc) and was looking forward to my Landseer sitting proudly above the bath.

DH now wants to do the bathroom in a modern style … with this bath.

AIBU to think my Landseer now won’t fit? DH thinks it will still go well?

YANBU - That bath does not lend itself to Landseer
YABU - DH is right, it will look nice

If you love it, do it.

I think it would look gorgeous in a modern bathroom, in an old fashioned gilt frame! You’ve given me an idea now…

Me too.
The juxtaposition of the old print with a modern bathroom would look really good in my opinion.

LizzieSiddal · 07/03/2023 21:40

I don’t think I’d want a dog with its tongue hanging out looking at me whilst I’m in the bathroom.

M08my · 07/03/2023 21:41

Imo pictures don't belong in a bathroom, mirrors are better. Put the print somewhere else, and have a large mirror in a decorative frame instead.

The reason being, as everyone points out, a real painting would spoil in the humidity. So you're pointing out it's just a print, and thereby making it look cheap.

WhyIsBogdanSexy · 07/03/2023 21:41

I recently stayed at a posh hotel and it was done sort of like this.

White suite, Modern black taps and black bits round the shower glass, dark green walls and 'old fashioned' sort of prints on the walls in gilt-type frames. It looked great.

I think you really need to go for it not half-arse it. Make it look very deliberate and it will be stylish.

IkBenDeMol · 07/03/2023 21:42

If you like it, and it makes you happy, who care what a "design expert" says?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/03/2023 21:43

Should be fine, I've seen a Constable in a Police Station., and a butcher I once went to had a large framed Bacon.

I love the juxtaposition of modern furniture or fixtures with older artworks, or vice versa. I think it can look better than having everything from the same era.

Denim Drift is lovely. I think your bathroom sounds like its going to look fab OP!

What's the frame style?
I'd go old-school not modern.

Old school bathroom?

its not framed yet so the frame can be bought to fit the bathroom. I was originally thinking of black engraved wood

Sorry, I was talking about the frame - ornate and silver-gilt!

I love the idea of silver gilt! I’m liking that more than my original idea of black wood so thank you ☺️

Thank you! I’m going to go for it, silver gilt frame, really make it look old fashioned against the modern bathroom suite ☺️

I’m afraid I would find a picture of a slavering dog in the bathroom both weird and offputting.

rainyskylight · 07/03/2023 21:59

I have a Bonnard (print) above the bath tub. It features a woman taking a bath and she looks a bit like me.

bamboonights · 07/03/2023 22:12

I love modern mixed with gilt. I also love a Landseer print but I had to get the canine version- she's 3 now and my doggy dream! Enjoy your bathroom 😁

Maybe not a Gainsborough in the council offices though?

Lovely print, OP, I think it'll look good.

Now if it was a genuine Newfoundland..........

The stag is in the entryway
Chillingham cattle on the landing
I really need something in the bathroom as it’s a bare wall otherwise

Oh wow! 😂 bathroom it is then if you don't have a lady shed either.

I don’t think they existed in these days, the Landseer dog was named after the artist

I think any picture in a bathroom would look odd to be honest, but if you like it then go for it. It would look equally odd in a modern or old-fashioned bathroom, so makes no difference.

They look brilliant. We’ve got Hokusai’s Wave in ours.

Crispynoodle · 07/03/2023 23:02

I feel bad I've an original oil on canvas above my bath.....obvs not a hugely famous one but it's been fine there for years!

Won't the humidity of the bathroom ruin a painting??

This. Also trying too hard but getting it wrong?!

What’s trying too hard about having a painting you love displayed in your home? Should only very rich people display art?

Don't worry, OP, most people on this thread don't have such daft notions.
