I want to move back home

Wanttomovebackhome · 07/03/2023 13:47

I want to come home…to England
I want to raise my Dd, in the British culture.
I want to feel at home and not find everything so hard.
People think I'm nuts to even consider it at the moment.
Am I? Is England really that bad?

Erm, a bit more context might be useful?

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 07/03/2023 13:48

I guess it depends where you are at the moment? But I have noticed a real decline in the last 15/10 years definitely

BitOutOfPractice · 07/03/2023 13:48

I think, more than ever, it depends on where and how much money you have sadly.

EsmeT · 07/03/2023 13:52

It's shocking, I wish I never came back here 5 years ago. Its expensive and depressing.

sunflowersandtomatoes · 07/03/2023 13:53

We came home from mainland Europe 18 months ago for solid, practical non-emotional reasons, so I don’t exactly regret it because those reasons still hold. But our quality of life has declined undoubtedly, everything is VERY expensive and I do have a feeling that things will get worse. I’m not ruling out moving again, and I’m glad DH has an EU passport, although I’d never say it to the children.

Wanttomovebackhome · 07/03/2023 13:57

@EsmeT Where were you before? Is it really that bad?

@sunflowersandtomatoes Where from?

Deathbyfluffy · 07/03/2023 13:58

It depends where you are now - from Russia, totally understandable. From Monaco, perhaps not.

Give us a clue?!

whatadayforadaydream · 07/03/2023 14:01

I moved to the UK 20 years ago. I stay, although for the last 8-10 years it's mainly been because we are already settled - so it's avoiding the disruption and difficulty of moving (thanks Brexit) rather than an active choice to stay. That said, we have a pretty good quality of life and everywhere has its pros and cons. There are many many things I really love about the UK - it's beautiful, it's got a great sense of fun, culturally it's great, there's lots of diversity. It has definitely gone down hill a bit though.

chopc · 07/03/2023 14:08

We came back to UK from the Middle East for one reason and one reason only xx I wanted my kids to finish their education in the UK. They are benefiting from a world class education and you can't compare their lifestyle to the one we had in the Middle East. Granted the middle eastern one was more luxurious but the one here is "real"

However we came back to be in a very comfortable financial position in the UK after saving like mad in the Middle East

Starflecked · 07/03/2023 14:09

I still love living here, its not without its challenges of course and I would say generally things are worse across the board than they were a decade or so ago, but not enough for me to want to move. I've travelled extensively and lived abroad for periods and although i found many places incredible have always been pleased to be home. It depends really where you're coming from, where you'd live, whether you'd be comfortable financially etc.

ItsNotReallyChaos · 07/03/2023 14:22

I would rather live here most other countries in the world. Yes, things aren't great at the moment but most countries are struggling with multiple issues at the moment.

Enthrallingstory · 07/03/2023 14:24

I love the UK, I've also travelled extensively and lived abroad. It's definitely looking very shabby around the edges in comparison to say 20 years ago but it's still a great country to live in compared to much of the world

IMustDoMoreExercise · 07/03/2023 14:32

No it isn't bad unless you don't have anywhere to live as there is a shortage of rental properties.

My husband speaks to his friend in France regularly and his friend is so upset about everything there. And they also have high food inflation (and their food was more expensive to start with), it just isn't reported here so that the Remoaners can keep blaming Brexit for everything.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 07/03/2023 14:35

People who live here just like to moan but don't realise how lucky they are

BMW6 · 07/03/2023 14:36

All countries go though peaks and troughs, Globally things are getting worse unless you are wealthy and protected from the worst.

If you miss Home, come home.

JamSandle · 07/03/2023 14:37

Where are you living now?

Snoken · 07/03/2023 14:38

It really depends on where you are now. I lived in the UK for 15+ years (from Sweden originally), but since brexit it became so dire and then the pandemic on top of that which both basically killed the town I lived in. A little over a year ago I just couldn't stand it anymore and left my husband (who refused to move) and me and my almost adult kids moved to Stockholm. Our quality of life is so much better here and we're so happy we moved away (for them) and back home (for me). Have to say though that family and friends were a big part of it too, so if you are missing family and friends and they are in England, it is probably the right decision to return.

EsmeT · 07/03/2023 14:42

I lived in Malta for 6 years! I much prefer the life abroad.

IncompleteSenten · 07/03/2023 14:49

It's better than some places and worse than others.

We've just started realistically looking at leaving the Uk. For strong, practical non emotional reasons, firstly the education system in most of Europe is to a higher standard than the Uk and mostly, in the country we want to go to, vocationally based, kids are encouraged to do what they're good at, focus on their strengths and improve their weaknesses and that's the ethos I prefer. Uk education system is to one size fits all for me, and my children, my son is gifted and the school he's at refuse to push him, mainly because of the every child matters status in place at that school, he's 8 and doing GCSE level maths, at home, at school he's bored doing his Y4 work, I'd happily home school then if we could trade our large semi for a small holding or land etc.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 07/03/2023 18:14

We are in Europe and will do everything in out power not to have to move home, whatever is coming.

If ww3 hits, we will try to bring our immediate family here rather than us go back (both our mums would need us).

Shamoo · 07/03/2023 18:14

We are debating the other way around, leaving the UK. It’s a hard decision, we have family in both locations but friends in the UK. We aren’t leaving because the UK has got worse, but it would make it easier to leave. It’s nowhere close to the county it was 10 years ago, on so many levels.
