To be cross with my husband over this

Youngest dc has a club on a Monday night so goes off to school with a packed lunch to eat after school before club. Ham sandwich, carrot sticks, juice etc and 2 ice packs. DH just collected dc at 8 pm and they hadn’t eaten packed lunch after school so he insisted they eat it in the car at 8 pm. Admittedly dc was hungry. That ham sandwich has been in the sandwich bag for 12 hours. Ice packs no longer cold. Aibu to be cross that he made dc eat it or should he have waited until he got home and I would have made something fresh? Please tell me food poisoning is not on the cards for tonight as I have such a busy day in work tomorrow which would cause chaos if I have to miss .

You are over reacting in my opinion.

missmollygreen · 06/03/2023 20:44

YABU, It will be fine

Knitterofcrap · 06/03/2023 20:44

YANBU

I wouldn’t have eaten it and certainly wouldn’t feed to my own child. Why on earth did he do it?

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 06/03/2023 20:44

It's only a ham sandwich! If it had been a hot day maybe but I don't see how it could make him I'll really. Better than leaving him hungry. Why didn't he eat it before club?

Xrays · 06/03/2023 20:45

I would have got them something else. Maybe even stopped somewhere on the way home. Poor kid is probably starving…! A packed lunch that’s been knocking around all day is pretty gross. I mean it’s fine if you’re literally on a shoe string and you have to make do but it’s not very nice.

MoneyInTheBananaStand · 06/03/2023 20:45

The sandwich will have been fine.

AnyFucker · 06/03/2023 20:46

I don’t see the problem

Palmface · 06/03/2023 20:46

I must be a monster bc I would have made him eat it too..

Cas112 · 06/03/2023 20:46

What's the issue

daisypond · 06/03/2023 20:47

It’s fine. It wouldn’t cross my mind that it wouldn’t be. I’d be more interested to know why they hadn’t had it after school, though?

SunshineGeorgie · 06/03/2023 20:47

Over reacting

Ihatethenewlook · 06/03/2023 20:48

I’d have left it up to your dc. If they’d have been hungry then surely they would have eaten it at some point? They were clearly happy to wait until they got home, so unless it was a fairly long journey then I don’t get why your oh insisted on them eating it immediately.
Actually as I was writing that I just thought maybe he was trying to be helpful by getting your dc fed, and you’d appreciate not having to make food fairly late at night before bedtime?

Inmy40 · 06/03/2023 20:58

Thank you. Some different views. Dc didn’t eat it as wasn’t hungry before club. Dc friends mum take them both after school then we take home due to work commitments. It’s a 20 minute journey home. I think making him eat it was to do with food waste but 12 hours, I don’t think it entered his mind about food poisoning. I’m hopeful some of you think it will be ok and would have done the same. Bag wasn’t in the sun or direct heat and was an insulated bag with 2 ice packs originally.

So it would have been cold and then cool for most of those 12 hours? I think it'll be OK - but I do get your point about not wanting to risk buggering up your whole work day tomorrow for the sake of a 40p ham sandwich.

luckylavender · 06/03/2023 21:08

I don't really understand the issue.

Lcb123 · 06/03/2023 21:09

of course that’s fine. Ham is so cooked and heavily processed , it’s not like he ate raw fish. And it’s cold outside

Inmy40 · 06/03/2023 21:10

Yes hopefully would have been cool for some of the 12 hours. Fussy child will only eat ham sandwiches otherwise would have made something else. He had a hot lunch so probably why he wasn’t that hungry although usually he eats it straight after school

I quite often take home sandwiches from work buffets that have been sat out all day and I've always been fine.

Radiatorvalves · 06/03/2023 21:11

Are you in the uk? If so it’s March and not that warm. If you were posting from Spain n July there might be an issue.

purplediscolove · 06/03/2023 21:11

I wouldn’t have eaten it after it being there for 12 hours or even less and I wouldn’t expect my child to do so either so I totally understand where your coming from

Inmy40 · 06/03/2023 21:12

Yes uk but thinking cloakroom was probably not cold.

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 06/03/2023 21:13

But he's only eaten it 3 or so hours after you were expecting him to eat it hasn't he? It doesn't seem like a big deal.

Beaniesmumsie · 06/03/2023 21:13

I wouldn’t eat it myself. But with the temp what it is atm it’s probably fine. If the kid has food poisoning then your husband should definitely stay home with him

MacarenaMacarena · 06/03/2023 21:14

Er, if your DC has food poisoning tomorrow as a result of DH's decision to force him to eat a dodgy sandwich, I'd suggest it should be up to DH to sort resulting problems and child care. Mention this now so it isn't a surprise tomorrow!

Paq · 06/03/2023 21:15

It's fine. Really. Presume your kid is ok?
