Does lists of tacky stuff change your opinion?

Over the years, I've read lots of posts with people listing tacky stuff such as mirrored furniture, Pandora bracelets, white cars, hot tubs, etc.

I'm wondering if anyone's tastes have been swayed
by reading mumsnetter's lists..for example you
stopped wearing a Pandora bracelet or your Michael Kors bag never comes out anymore..

YABU - Nobody takes these views seriously

YANBU - I've adapted my shopping habits after reading certain threads.

No. What's wrong with Pandora, I've never even heard they're considered to be tacky before!

I used to be influenced by the opinion of others as a teenager. Consequently wore lots of stuff that wasn't Me and didn't suit me. Now I am older I like what I like.

Nothing wrong with the jewelry itself, or with liking it! They do some great little bits. I've got a ring of theirs somewhere because they made a dupe of a Cartier design - I'm the tackiest of all!

I think a lot of people's discomfort comes from the fact that the high street stores are deliberately designed to give the "look" of a higher end brand when it's actually mid range. Also, it's developed a bit of a bad reputation as something men but for their partners so they can buy a new charm every Christmas and not have to think!

I’ve never cared about buying things to keep up with the trends and actually don’t like having the same as everyone else.

If I like it then I’ll buy it, if I don’t then I won’t.

However, many MNers will only buy things that are on trend and would 100% change things if they thought they majority of MNers didn’t like it.

I’ve lost count of how many homes ‘look tacky’ because they’re not all white or grey and actually have a splash of colour or wallpaper.

I still remember the thread where the OP drank lemonade with her meal instead of wine or water.
It was insane how many posters said she shouldn’t have had lemonade as it’s not the ‘done thing’.

This is sad of me but yes. I've been on MN for over a decade, I stopped putting photos on my walls, only buy white bedding and towels and when I moved 6 years ago got rid of my leather L shape and bought a beautiful fabric sofa and decorated mis matchy with things I love looking at.

So MN definitely shaped me that way and I now slightly judge people who have photos on walls, tacky bedding and leather sofas/matchy tacky furniture.

@OriGanOver

That’s really honest of you but it makes me really sad!

Why would you change the things you like just to keep up with some strangers on the internet and why would you judge anyone else simply for having different taste then you.

KatherineJaneway · 05/03/2023 15:49

I like what I like. Don't care what others think. Spent too many years of my life doing that.

OriGanOver · 05/03/2023 15:53

@CremeEggThief I still have photos. They're on the bookcase and side board, and tbh they do look better there.

It's fairly easy to say buy what you like when you're coming from a place of privilege. I grew up in foster care and furnished the council flat I was given years ago from a job centre grant and my social worker. I had no idea what I liked and no money to really buy things until I went to uni and got a job that wasn't mw. I never had the luxury of growing up not in survival mode before I had a place. MN gave me lots of tips with life and home - having less cheap clutter and pictures/paintings instead of photos and canvases helped me make my now home beautiful. I do laugh at myself about only white bedding though 😂

CremeEggThief · 06/03/2023 15:23

I'm pleased to hear you still have your photos, OriGan.

I don't come from a place of privilege either. I'm just lucky in a way that I have felt confident to do my own thing since childhood and never worried or cared about the opinions of others, I suppose.

TheConflictOnion · 07/03/2023 08:09

I'd love to know where the "photos are tacky" thing came from. I'm a bit of a nerd about interior design, but I've only ever heard about that particular "rule" on MN. Is it just on the walls, or on tables and cabinets?

I know several people who might be described as "old money" with huge houses - photos everywhere!!!

No photos up in my wee flat though. Am I accidentally classy?

BertHandsome · 07/03/2023 08:19

I’m too poor to care what peolle think about my home / things / style. I can’t change them anyway so if you have a problem fuck off 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since when have white cars been tacky? 🤨

Since about the 80's.

Since about the 80's.

Since some random poster on MN decreed it. Top Gear have white as the third most popular colour in 2022.

Conkersinautumn · 07/03/2023 17:31

I'm not particularly trendy, or into specific brands so I've not noticed anything I like as having attracted someone's ire, but then as I don't follow fashions I guess I don't then suddenly find I'm out of date either. A LOT of mn posts equate popular and successful marketing with tacky. I can't imagine why Wink

Bouledeneige · 08/03/2023 10:45

I guess I have my own view of what's tacky but that's probably heavily influenced subconsciously by the style of houses my friends have. But not all of them have money to spend on interiors so I'm very aware of the privilege of caring about it. I do like a certain style - a mix of old and new, good design, art and textures but I know that's a luxury.

But I also hate waste so think that inevitably as we grow older our homes will become more dated even with re-decoration when required. Because it would be incredibly wasteful to keep updating and throwing out perfectly serviceable furniture and fittings just to match current fashions.

For instance the other day my daughter pointed out my TV was old fashioned. It's flat screen (relatively) at least 15 years old and works really well. I can't say I even noticed that it was out of date! When I go into other peoples houses I might notice lovely art, fabrics, rugs or designs but never the TV! Do I care? Not at all.

PinkButtercups · 08/03/2023 10:47

No absolutely not!
I'm me and if you don't like it that's not my problem. I'll never change myself for anyone or society.
