Does lists of tacky stuff change your opinion?

Over the years, I've read lots of posts with people listing tacky stuff such as mirrored furniture, Pandora bracelets, white cars, hot tubs, etc.

I'm wondering if anyone's tastes have been swayed
by reading mumsnetter's lists..for example you
stopped wearing a Pandora bracelet or your Michael Kors bag never comes out anymore..

YABU - Nobody takes these views seriously

YANBU - I've adapted my shopping habits after reading certain threads.

It's classist bullshit

AmyDudley · 05/03/2023 14:49

what are these lists? I've never seen any. Do people start threads titled 'lists of things I like'? - That's a bit bizarre if it is the case. But know I don't care what anyone else likes or doesn't, I certainly wouldn't base my choices on what randoms on the internet say is tacky or not, life is far too short not to do your own thing.

Fizbosshoes · 05/03/2023 14:49

No. My house is full of decor/home crimes according to MN
Brown leather sofas
Laminate floor in the kitchen
Lots of cushions
Eyelet curtains
Feature walls
Metro tiles in downstairs cloakroom and main bathroom
Ensuite bathroom
Bedding that's not washed daily etc
Barely a book to be seen (I think that means I'm a thick, uneducated peasant)
But I'm not planning to make any changes based on strangers opinions!

Not having any books is potentially quite bad (but maybe you are minimalist and read loads on an e-reader, or visit the library regularly). Other than that your list sounds like a normal house.

OriGanOver · 05/03/2023 14:55

This is sad of me but yes. I've been on MN for over a decade, I stopped putting photos on my walls, only buy white bedding and towels and when I moved 6 years ago got rid of my leather L shape and bought a beautiful fabric sofa and decorated mis matchy with things I love looking at.

So MN definitely shaped me that way and I now slightly judge people who have photos on walls, tacky bedding and leather sofas/matchy tacky furniture.

I do think MN has changed since those days as I haven't seen a thread about photos on walls for many years.

MrsDoylesDoily · 05/03/2023 14:59

The day I let anyone slapping away at their keyboard influence my shopping choice/fashion choice, would be the day I left MN forever 👀😂

MrsDoylesDoily · 05/03/2023 15:00

It sounds like it's controlling you rather than shaping you

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 05/03/2023 10:30

All those lists are just one person's opinion, much like the 100 books experts say you must read... It's all bollocks.

Yes. See also 100 places to visit before you die.

Boring.

TheySeeMeRowling · 05/03/2023 15:06

No one with taste pays any noice to what MN thinks.

I’ve seen a couple of threads lately where posters seemed to mostly hate en suites. I didn’t know that was a mumsnet no no until then. I also didn’t know eyelet curtains are ‘bad’, although we have blinds and no curtains at all so who knows what they make of that. 😬

kitsuneghost · 05/03/2023 15:09

Absolutely not. I wear what i like. Bunch of random mums hating it certainly won't affect that.

Mercurial123 · 05/03/2023 15:13

Why do you care? How would you feel if people thought you were tacky? I couldn't care less. I'm an adult and make choices based on what I like, not what is considered "tasteful".

CremeEggThief · 05/03/2023 15:15

Mumsnet is NOT representative of RL, OP.
Not. A. Single. Bit.
The demographics here are heavily skewed towards people who are solidly middle-class and upper-middle class

In my area, nearly everyone thinks new-build 4 bedroom Barret houses are posh. Especially ones with seasonal wreaths and fancy ribbons and bows on their front doors.

Probably to be sneered at by Mumsnet, but a far more accurate barometer of what most people like and/or aspire to in working class and lower middle-class areas.

CremeEggThief · 05/03/2023 15:18

I honestly feel so sorry for you if that is really true that you stopped putting family photos on your wall just because of Mumsnet, Origan. That is awful for you that you were influenced like that.

Mercurial123 · 05/03/2023 15:18

Are seasonal wreaths considered tacky? If so, I love mine even more. I bought it in the sale for next Christmas.

mycatisaloveabledemon · 05/03/2023 15:21

Huh Hmm Been away from MN for a few years and this thread literally describes good friends of mine and myself - as tacky

Oh well. I also go out in my pjs too if I want to grab some milk or whatever from the corner shop. Daily in fact.

Good job I shamelessly don't care what people online think of me I suppose 🙆‍♀️

Reddahlias · 05/03/2023 15:24

No, I already have impeccable taste so I don't own any of the tacky things.

This Wink

Lovelyring · 05/03/2023 15:26

No. What's wrong with Pandora, I've never even heard they're considered to be tacky before!

I used to be influenced by the opinion of others as a teenager. Consequently wore lots of stuff that wasn't Me and didn't suit me. Now I am older I like what I like.

Megapint · 05/03/2023 15:30

No, I enjoy wasting time on mumsnet but it's a parallel universe to my real life. From lists of tacky stuff, what food the kids eat, how much TV is watched it doesn't reflect to my own life or that of anyone I know.

TheConflictOnion · 05/03/2023 15:32

Going against the grain here but - sort of!

Certainly nudged me in the right direction of getting rid of things (clothes/home bits) that I'd been thinking were a bit hackneyed and tired, but which I was clinging on to for too long!

PermanentTemporary · 05/03/2023 15:33

House stuff, not much because I am more certain of what I like. Style and beauty yes I'm influenced because I don't dress or groom myself very well. I value MN for that.

TulipCat · 05/03/2023 15:33

I wouldn't be swayed by the opinions of randoms on the internet, but would care more about the opinions of people in my social and professional circles.

DidyouNO · 05/03/2023 15:35

Do people actually care about this even though we're not at school anymore? How pathetic 😂😂
