So I do suffer with high blood pressure which I have meds for.
I haven't took my meds in about 5days I'm a nightmare. Anyway I'm feeling really tired and headachey tonight just thought I would check it and it's 167/114.
Put this into Google has I have no idea what it all means and it says it a medical emergency!! Now I'm freaking out! I can't go anywhere has I have three children sleeping (single parent). Someone tell me I'm going to be OK 🫨🫨

Have you got medication to take?

Saltywalruss · 04/03/2023 23:50

Have you taken your medicine now? Give 111 a call to see what they say.

Solobear · 04/03/2023 23:52

This. Plus, relax and take your blood pressure a couple more times after you've been sat for five minutes.

But mostly, take your pills and talk to someone who knows more than we do.

MrsDoylesDoily · 04/03/2023 23:53

NHS Calculator says...

Your blood pressure reading of 167/114 is really high.
You should get your blood pressure checked at a GP practice or pharmacy straight away and no later than the next 2 days.

I second the advice to ring 111.

Fluffyhoglets · 04/03/2023 23:54

Take your medication and then take your bp again in the morning. It should be lower by then.

But then ring 111 and see if you need to be seen or need to be prescribed a higher dose.

FannyFifer · 04/03/2023 23:55

It's probably higher as you are panicking..
Calm down, you've taken your medication. Don't keep checking it.
You need to prioritise yourself, you are on medication for high BP you must take it.

Merryoldgoat · 04/03/2023 23:57

Do you have any symptoms? Severe headache? Palpitations? Chest pain? Shortness of breath?

If not drink some water, lie down and see how you are in the morning.

And take measures to ensure you stop missing your tablets. I use a pill box next to my bed.

VerityUnreasonble · 04/03/2023 23:58

It is high OP but if you were in hospital and they were checking your observations you would still be scoring 0 on the early warning charts (0 is the best score!). You can Google NEWS chart if you want to check yourself.

Give 111 a call and get some advice but don't panic.

Found this and other advice to fo some deep breathing exercises to lower it a bit immediately as you will be anxious and getting higher readings

"How to lower your blood pressure immediately without medication
There are a few tips you can try to lower your blood pressure immediately without medication:

Take a deep breath and try to relax. Stress and anxiety can raise your blood pressure, so taking a moment to calm down can help lower it. Learning breath exercises that slow your heart rate and promote relaxation.
Drink some water. Dehydration can cause your blood pressure to rise, so drinking a glass of water can help.
Try some physical activity. Going for a walk or doing some light stretching can help lower your blood pressure. Try to do regular exercise.
Eat some dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which have been shown to lower blood pressure. Just be sure to eat it in moderation.
Take a cold shower. Cold water can cause your blood vessels to constrict, which can lower your blood pressure.
Stop smoking and limit alcohol
It's important to note that these methods may only provide temporary relief and are not a substitute for medical treatment. If you are concerned about your blood pressure, you should speak with a healthcare provider. They can recommend a treatment plan that is appropriate for you."

Solobear · 05/03/2023 00:00

Thank you all for your replys.

Definitely drink water, it really helps

MadamArcati99 · 05/03/2023 00:03

put your feet in a bowl of warm water

VerityUnreasonble · 05/03/2023 00:03

Also, if you are not already, sit quietly and rest for a few minutes before you check your BP, check it, let it completely deflate, wait a minute and check again. Do the same for both arms and keep a note of each. The machines are pretty good but can be temperamental at times so an average is useful.

user1471459761 · 05/03/2023 00:06

If it helps I've just discovered I have high blood pressure and mine was regularly around/higher than yours. I'm now meds for it and they work within a day or two. Just take your meds as instructed. Why would you not 🤷‍♀️.

Eightiesgirl · 05/03/2023 00:08

Obviously, contact someone medical if you are still experiencing high blood, but when it's come down, something to consider in the future is beetroot juice (after checking that it doesn't interfere with any meds you are taking). I had high blood pressure and within about half an hour of drinking a glass of beetroot juice my blood pressure had come down significantly. Its an acquired taste but it definitely works.

EveryoneButSam · 05/03/2023 00:09

When I was in hospital with pre-eclampsia we would be told to lie on our left side if bp was really high, then it would get checked again in 20-30 min. Definitely seemed to help bring it down.

I second the beetroot juice, works like magic and quite quickly (high in potassium which absorbs the excess salt bringing down the pressure)

ToLongToCharge · 05/03/2023 00:20

This was always going to happen without taking your medication and will keep happening if you dont take it

If you keep ‘forgetting’ to take your meds, you will likely have a massive heart attack or stroke.
Your a single mother.
If the risks of dying leaving your children alone arent enough to remember to take your meds, then i dont know what is

NevieSticks · 05/03/2023 00:21

You have 3 children you need to be fit for. Take the meds they have given you or you could end up having a stroke.

Underminer · 05/03/2023 00:43

I’m newly diagnosed with high BP and have been given medication. The first thing I did when I got my meds is to set a reminder on my phone for a set time each day and I also have Alexa give me a verbal reminder just in case I miss my phone reminder.

i need to make some significant lifestyle changes too, but not taking the medication needs a rethink as to how you can remember.

SRS29 · 05/03/2023 00:48

TAKE YOUR FUCKING MEDS! I am 57 and got diagnosed with essential hypertension at 23.....eg tough shit, get over it, take the meds. Occasionally slipped and the impact on my BP was huge.......be thankful we have the monitoring and access to treatment. Just do it. x

Rebel2 · 05/03/2023 00:51

Put your meds somewhere you see them
I have my vitamins on my work desk, but by the kettle, by your toothbrush, somewhere you will see them every morning
