So I do suffer with high blood pressure which I have meds for.
I haven't took my meds in about 5days I'm a nightmare. Anyway I'm feeling really tired and headachey tonight just thought I would check it and it's 167/114.
Put this into Google has I have no idea what it all means and it says it a medical emergency!! Now I'm freaking out! I can't go anywhere has I have three children sleeping (single parent). Someone tell me I'm going to be OK 🫨🫨

If you take several different tablets, you might find it easier to use a weekly pill case. You can even get boxes which have an alarm to remind you to take the tablets.

I take five tablets every morning for high BP and anticoagulants after a TIA and sit down once a week to fill up my pill case then each morning I just open the correct lid and take them all. It’s important to get into a routine each morning, I keep my pill box near the kettle so I see it when I make my morning cup of coffee - it’s the first thing I do each day. Hopefully you have something routine which you do each morning which might help you remember.

I have had higher BP than your reading so know how scared to makes you feel.

Moraxella · 05/03/2023 01:38

@EveryoneButSam thats to displace your pregnant uterus from compressing the large vessels in your body which can secondarily cause your BP to rise. Not relevant in this situation.

XenoBitch · 05/03/2023 01:47

You will be ok. Just take your meds as prescribed.
If you worry, then that will shoot your BP up too. I called 111 when mine was what Google classed as a hypertensive crisis. I was told to leave Google alone!
And having a high BP wont mean you will imminently drop down dead from a heart attack or stroke. It takes a long time with a high BP for that to be an issue.
Many people walk about with a scary high BP with no idea.

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2023 02:11

I suggest you set out your pills at a certain time and get into that routine and that way you won't forget. I've a raft of pills to take and set them out same place n I know I've had them. Relax op you will be fine. 👍

Forgooodnesssakenow · 05/03/2023 03:13

Have you used nasal decongestants recently? I had to go to a and e for something else recently, ruptured disc in spine it turned out, and my BP was 170/100, they checked several times

They still sent me home with advice to see GP the next day,, which I did, still high. Given an at home ninieo, turned out it was the nasal spray I was taking for my cold, in betwee sprays I was 117/75 ISH.

You n3e to take your emss but if not normally this high could be something pushing it up.

When I was in hospital with pre-eclampsia we would be told to lie on our left side if bp was really high, then it would get checked again in 20-30 min. Definitely seemed to help bring it down.

Not relevant unless she is in the late stages of pregnancy. Left lying is to shift the pressure and weight of the uterus off the great vessels.

OP
Take your meds now
Make sure your legs are uncrossed when you take your BP
Drink some water
Set up a system for taking your medication every day. I have an old fashioned pill dispenser box that sits on my counter. It's plastic and tacky (literally as it got sprayed with counter top cleaner once and is still sticky) but it works. I was forgetting to take my PPI and having symptoms.....or was taking them and still having break through symptoms could tell as I kept forgetting if I had taken my tablets.

ShippingNews · 05/03/2023 04:02

Set a notification on your phone, to alert you to take your medications. You really need them !

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/03/2023 04:09

I had high blood pressure and I was given a form similar to the attached picture. I had to take a reading twice in the morning and twice in the evening for a week and then calculate the average.

A doctor had said an individual reading can be very misleading.

Obviously, contact someone medical if you are still experiencing high blood, but when it's come down, something to consider in the future is beetroot juice (after checking that it doesn't interfere with any meds you are taking). I had high blood pressure and within about half an hour of drinking a glass of beetroot juice my blood pressure had come down significantly. Its an acquired taste but it definitely works.

The cawstons one seems to be the nicer one on the market!

BlueHeelers · 05/03/2023 06:35

YABU.

Why the fuck don’t you take your medication? It works and there are few side effects.

Save you using up resources like 111 when you shouldn’t need to.

Griefgood · 05/03/2023 06:54

What did you think would happen when missing your meds? So now you've got yourself in a situation that may mean the requirement of a doctor. It's hard to get an appointment and had you taken your meds you wouldn't need one.

Set a daily alarm on your phone. It's not difficult.

Blankscreen · 05/03/2023 07:10

I've been on blood pressureeds for about 5 years. Recently been to see a consultant and he advised to take them at night time. Maybe try that as part of your routine.

It is pointless to ring 111 if you haven't taken your meds. They can only prescribe more of what you've got!

That's nothing to do with BP control, we put preg ladies on their side to get the baby bump off their tummy vessels to stop bump squishing them (as the placenta can't control its own blood flood unlike the brain/kidneys etc), it doesn't actually drop your bp

Op take your meds, ring 111, bp readings should all be best of 3 arm on a pillow level with your heart. 111 may tell you to take an extra dose depending on what your on. Try to relax else it will get worse, keep hydrated. Warm bath will vasodilate you and temporarily drop it a little. But u need a plan to make sure you remember the tablets, put them by the kettle/toothbrush etc

Jooliusreezer · 05/03/2023 07:43

You need to make some lifestyle changes, the first one being to take your bloody medication.

Eat well, exercise, drink lots of water, stop salt and reduce sugar.

You do not want to experience what’ll happen if you don’t.

Wasn’t that a bit harsh? We all drop the ball sometimes especially as mothers, when we are looking after everyone’s needs.

Griefgood · 05/03/2023 10:48

@Fern1978 drop a ball it's been 5 days!

So you think you go to the drs fry told you've high blood pressure, take these tablets, it'll sort that.

Take the tablets, all good.

Stop taking the tablets, lo and behold the BO goes up.

Being a mother has nothing at all to do with anything! Stop being such a martyr "looking after everyone", you only need to look after your children. Taking a tablet, that takes literally 2 seconds is hardly arduous and mothers manage to take a contraceptive pill most days.

How can anyone "forget" for five days?

Oh don’t be ridiculous. It’s one tablet per day. I know, I take BP medication. I take it with my morning coffee. The packet of pills is next to my breakfast table. My pharmacist sometimes uses a brand with named days, so you know which day to take. Any idiot could deal with that, but instead you’re encouraging someone to use up shared resource of the NHS because she can’t cope with taking responsibility for herself. Ridiculous.

Griefgood · 05/03/2023 11:10

Well said @BlueHeelers, same people that will
moan about not getting a doctors appointment!

Costacoffeeplease · 05/03/2023 12:33

My mum had sudden extremely high bp a few months ago, she ended up in hospital for a week and was told it was touch and go for a while.

Don’t mess about with high bp it can kill

A doctor had said an individual reading can be very misleading.

I also use a similar form for my gp. He says a single reading is meaningless! I have to do this twice a year which is a faff but well worth the peace of mind, especially after having a TIA which has left me with some loss of vision.

Sunriseinwonderland · 05/03/2023 13:34

Mine was 220/150 when I had a stroke. Luckily I recovered.
Normal is around 120/80.
You should not stop taking your blood pressure meds without discussing it with your GP. Ring 111 for advice on this one.
Its called the silent killer for a reason - no symptoms.
As a result of ignoring my high blood pressure for ages I now have a massively enlarged heart and have to take a whole load of other drugs. You can also go blind.

BlueHeelers · 05/03/2023 14:14

The OP knows all this. She just can't be bothered to take her medication.
