UK would be a pushover if Putin invaded

AIBU to think the UK population would be too busy fretting about rude receptionists, grousing about trans issues and spying on their possible benefit-fraudster neighbours to put up any meaningful resistance to a Russian invasion? It's hard to imagine people coming together in any significant degree.

If Hitler had finished the job at Dunkirk the German army could have pretty much crossed the channel in bath tubs for all the resistance they would have met.

That he didn't, opting to fight on the Eastern front instead was what saved Britain's bacon. Support of Japan pretty much sealed the deal.

Nothingbuttheglory · 04/03/2023 10:42

And it's not like we're worth invading.

I agree, we wouldn't be invaded... just nuked 😭😭😭

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/03/2023 18:07

I think we will apologise to them for having to invade us and will appoint a support worker for every single one of the German Army. We will also signpost them for UC

KatyKlanger · 04/03/2023 17:57

Also, people are here being critical because the UK is very welcoming - and tolerant of people whose second language is English.

You go to Europe with less than perfect Italian, Spanish or French and see how you get on.

I dunno, Brits pretty much expect the whole world to speak English! 😁🙄

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/03/2023 18:11

Ooh, are the Germans invading too?

Icedlatteplease · 04/03/2023 18:15

Nothing unites a divided population more than a shared enemy.

Whether we physically have the capabilities is quite another matter

bamboonights · 04/03/2023 12:39

100% agree with this. Our wokeness must have the world's leaders - good and bad laughing out loud. Putin probably has a greater fear of the west than ever before listening to our politicians refusing to describe a woman.

I always have to laugh when I see posts like this. The idea that today's "youth" are someone soft and incapable is just nonsense.

It's even more laughable when that particular suggestion comes from the two most entitled generations this country has ever known. Generations that never faced a moment of real threat or adversity in their lives complaining that the generation they raised, or that their children raised, aren't made of the "right stuff" without a hint of irony.

Maybe if you'd spent a fraction of the time you spent looking after your own interests on trying to improve society things wouldn't be so "awful" for you now.

I'm sure it's really difficult having to decided between 3 weeks in Portugal or 10 days in Antigua from your 4 bed detached house. Meanwhile, the "youth" get to navigate through a destroyed economy, a collapsing society, and a wrecked planet.

British life wasn’t a cohesive bed of roses prior to WW2.
We were at threat of invasion, people rose to it, came together, and they would again.

This.

cakeorwine · 04/03/2023 18:21

Of course people would fight. When you are threatened by an enemy, you pull together.

The OP is just looking to winge and start a fight.

We do have nuclear weapons but if we fired our nukes at Moscow, they would nuke us.

cakeorwine · 04/03/2023 18:24

junglejane66 · 04/03/2023 17:40

Weather was part of it, but they also needed air superiority, which they didn't get after they lost the battle of Britain

We also had the Navy, which would have made maintaining supplies to an invading army much more difficult.

They could have invaded but could they have carried on fighting. It's hard to attack ships from the air.

PerkingFaintly · 04/03/2023 18:39

I think you've confused your timeline, Vitriolinsanity.

The Dunkirk evacuation was in Jun 1940 - and Hitler did his damnedest to "finish the job" there. In that, and in the Battle of Britain in the skies in autumn 1840, he straight failed.

Hitler didn't open the Eastern Front until a year later, in Jun 1941.

Hitler clearly didn't think he could cross the Channel in bathtubs or that he would meet no resistance in the UK. In fact, the opposite: he postponed his planned invasion, then shelved it indefinitely as Too Hard, and moved onto breaking his non-aggression pact with Stalin and attacking Ukraine, Russia and the other eastern front countries.

Turns out that wasn't easy, either...

I'm not looking to "winge"; the responses on here are genuinely interesting.

And I am sure that if Putin invaded, then trans people would stand up and fight - because Putin is not exactly friendly towards LGBT people.

But I guess that doesn't chime with your views

People might have less of an issue with the so called 'feral teenagers' if this happened. I teach and can immediately think of a good crew of year 11s I could pull together who'd be useful. They might not be the best at making every teacher's life easy but I would definitely want them as my squad if this happened lol.

Mmm. I know what you’re saying but I’m not so sure.
I reckon Putin would just need some slick promotional work from his oligarchs. Promise the youth their dodgy dealings would be respected in the motherland and they could have a yacht too. Throw in a few Eastern European women and maybe a cool hoodie and I reckon you’ve lost most of the lads from my last school

Yes the navy would have been the biggest problem, but most of it was in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. They also thought they be able to bomb ships from the air, but Dunkirk proved they were poor at it.
They made an attempt to invade in summer 1940 with operation sealion but couldn't get are superiority and then the weather changed in September so gave up and also had to focus on Russia

The people yes, I don't think there would be brave men like there has been in Ukraine. Everyone would be trying to flee.

But overall it would be fine, as the other countries would come along to help.

Fleeing an island is hard. Would people in France be complaining about all the boats?

I agree with you.
People would be out stealing, causing trouble etc.
Russia would beat us in a second.

Garbage.

I say that as a member of the armed forces. Nukes aside, the Russian "army" is a joke. Its been the victim of siphoning of of its budget for decades by corrupt politicians. They also have no clue at all how to carry out combined operations and their "elite" units like the 1st Guards Tank Army have been decimated by the Ukrainians. Our armed forces are a lot more powerful than the Ukrainians.

For years we thought they were good, it turns out they're just good at parading across Red Square.

PerkingFaintly · 04/03/2023 21:48

Yip.

January 1st 2022, Russia had the second strongest army in the world (supposedly).
January 1st 2023, Russia has the second strongest army in Ukraine.

Greenshake · 04/03/2023 21:53

I am sure that if Russia invaded the UK, the Ukrainians would be happy to give us a hand 🇬🇧🇺🇦🙂
