How much do you spend on lunch and coffees etc on work days?

Forgot my soup yesterday and wound up spending a stupid amount of money on my chicken salad and coffee. Twenty four bloody quid. Prices have risen so steeply in the last while.

What is a normal spend for you in a local lunch place?

One of the most compelling reasons to go into work is the subsidised food and drink. Lovely barista coffee 53p

Bliss.

The question is how to find out about these sort of benefits before accepting the job

GiltEdges · 03/03/2023 18:59

Both DH and I WFH, but on the days one of us walks past the local deli at lunchtime and picks up a couple of salad boxes/sandwiches and drinks it'll easily come to £20-25. We don't tend to do it more than once per week on average.

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 03/03/2023 19:01

I spend nothing as there is nowhere for me to get lunch. If I were to forget my lunch I would just have to go hungry. I’m used to it, I’ve always worked in the middle of nowhere.

I hope you enjoyed your salad, £24 does sound expensive though.

Survey99 · 03/03/2023 19:02

We have a works canteen - Porridge with fruit for breakfast 60p, soup + 1/2 sandwich £1.20. I drink chilled water.

We are moving to new offices with no facilities now so i will be taking in a thermos of Porridge, one of soup and a piece of fruit. No way would I regularly spend that much for lunch.

GreenMarigold · 03/03/2023 19:03

I work in a rural location so there’s nowhere to buy tea and coffee, and it’s provided at work free anyway.

There is a van that comes round at lunchtime. A nice sandwich, jacket potato or hot soup and roll is about £4.

CirreltheSquirrel · 03/03/2023 19:04

I work in a village with no shops or cafes so have to take my own. There is a free bean to cup coffee machine. If I forgot for some reason I guess I'd be driving to the supermarket and picking something up for a couple of quid.

NSA2103 · 03/03/2023 19:05

£3.40 on Tesco Meal Deal, with Clubcard discount.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/03/2023 19:08

How out of touch must you be to think £24 is the current price of a chicken salad and a coffee in a cafe?

Even in nicer places you'd probably have change from £15 and they'd be pushing it with what people would pay.

I don't buy typical lunch food like sandwiches, salads etc because I never eat that sort of food by choice so mostly take my own but if I'm going for lunch out, I'll go to a street food van, supermarket cafe, takeaway sushi, fish and chips or something like Toby Carvery. Even with the price rises it's usually £10 to £15 at most, or possibly about £18 if I go for a lunch meal and a pint at my favourite Indian street food bar.

Xmasbaby11 · 03/03/2023 19:09

Once a week I get a falafel sandwich from a Turkish place near work. Freshly made and really good. £3

I do buy the game odd latte from the cafe at work (university) but only once or twice a week. Otherwise I bring in food and make hot drinks.

Egghead68 · 03/03/2023 19:10

Take my own lunch (costs around £2 to make) and get free coffee. However yesterday unusually, I spent £9.85 on a Brie sandwich, bag of crisps, choc almonds and coffee from Pret and the canteen. Won’t be doing that again.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/03/2023 19:22

If I’m in the office on a Friday I spasm out on a Greggs Sausage roll and a bit of Tottenham cake. £3.

Minimochi · 03/03/2023 19:55

Nothing. We pay £15 per month for lunch at work (main meal, salad and dessert). Tea and coffee are freely available. There's nothing around to buy from anyway, though.

halfthesun · 03/03/2023 19:57

Leftovers plus have a box of herbal tea. Teacher. So cutting back on everything due to cost of living insanity.

Loafbeginsat60 · 03/03/2023 19:58

If I get a 2 course lunch at work it's £3.65

If I go to Tesco I might get tomatoes and mozzerella so maybe £3

I try hard not to spend more than that tho!

WorstBJever · 03/03/2023 19:59

Our canteen is subsidised, so a week's worth of meals never costs more than £10. On earlies I get a cooked breakfast for around £1.50, or an evening meal is around £2. We also get unlimited free hot drinks and a free piece of fruit a day.

HamstersAreMyLife · 03/03/2023 20:01

I always take my own and use my phone voucher for a Greggs coffee. If I get stuck and buy its a meal deal only. I go in once a week and don't get long for lunch so no chance of a long lunch with massive, expensive salad. Does sound nice though.

Teachers have a starting salary of £28,000 so well above those on minimum wage, no?

neverendinglauaundry · 03/03/2023 20:05

About £12-14 for something nice & a drink or, as I work at a university with subsidised food about £2 for cheesy chips and a free tea/coffee from the staffroom. My preferred option is to bring my own food in, but I do sometimes forget or run out of time.

megletthesecond · 03/03/2023 20:07

£0 spend at work.
I always take food with me. Sandwich, crisps, chocolate and nuts.

Fairislefandango · 03/03/2023 20:11

Nothing. I always take in lunch and snacks, make my own tea and coffee. There's a (school) canteen, but virtually none of the teachers eat there. The food is a bit crap, apparently, and most people would prefer to have lunch time away from the kids! Not that the kids aren't nice, but it's nice to feel properly off duty for a while!

StClare101 · 03/03/2023 20:13

Take away coffee (large) is AUD$5-6.

Our work cafe does hot meals for $14 or salads for $11. I bring my own lunch though.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 03/03/2023 20:58

£24 for 1 person on lunch

You must be fucking minted

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/03/2023 23:05

I’m in three days. Tuesday I bring lunch, Thursday I WFH in the afternoon so keep cereal bars at work for a snack in the morning then have something when I get in. Friday I always go to Pret with my colleague. Today I had a hummus and salad wrap and a cherry Bakewell - about £7. I really, really missed Pret Fridays during Covid!

We don’t get free tea/coffee, so I generally pick up a coffee on the way in from Greggs, then get a tea from the on site Costa later. About £3 a day.

Murdoch1949 · 04/03/2023 00:42

Hope it was a whole organic chicken for that price.

silentpool · 04/03/2023 00:59

Nothing. I bring in my Aeropress preloaded with ground coffee and a mason jar salad, which works out pretty well. Oh and I bring some chocolate with me too, just in case.
