Covering up mirrors in school toilets with body positive messages

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 10:18

I love this! There seems to be outright fury in much of the British press where it has happened, but no school girl ( or boy) needs to look in a mirror during the school day.

And the anti make up messages that are being used in many cases give me hope that the tyranny of make up may be losing it's hold

I hate seeing girls fall into it's clutches - beautiful young girls taking on skin-care regimes before they are even teenagers! and needing to cover their faces with crap before they leave the house.

I really hope this movement spreads - lets take down all mirrors in all school toilets

Your use of the term 'beautiful young girls' is at odds with your messaging, and is actually part of the problem.
They don't need to submit to 'the tyranny of make up' because they are young and beautiful?
What about the ones who arent 'beautiful' (its not after all synonymous with being young) or don't think they are? Or when they're no longer young?
Why does their 'beauty' even matter?

EXACTLY!

You can’t say that looks don’t matter in one breath, and then call them “beautiful” on the next.

Not everyone is beautiful. Everyone has beauty; but not everyone is beautiful. And that’s okay. Just like people are differing levels of sportiness, some people are funnier than others, some people are more creative than others, and some people are smarter than others.

Well, congratulations Biscuit

Have you considered that not everyone is of equal ability and some may struggle to coordinate without a mirror to help them? Or are you a little bit ableist in additional to your internalised misogyny? Smile

no, I am severely dyspraxic, so likely to have far more issues than anyone else

How annoying just let people look at their face

Jimhendersonsrelish · 03/03/2023 10:59

As a teenager who had a lot of nosebleeds (still do) and attended a school with no first aid room/sick bay/school nurse, I'd have been pretty pissed off at not being able to use a mirror to check I didn't have blood all over my face.

Festivemoose · 03/03/2023 10:59

Sexist and ableist.

The campaign is to post positive messages in bathrooms - not to replace mirrors with messages (even this is still patronising and can be damaging)

Some groups - mainly evangelical church organisations - have adopted this and taken it further by removing mirrors and in some cases replacing them with bible versus. The link you posted is from a religious website with red flags all over it.

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 11:00

I just love that this is happening, and I think it is such a positive thing.

I really hope it grows, and becomes the norm for school toilets to have no mirrors

You n my at not need a mirror, others will 🤷‍♀️

The world is getting more ridiculous by the second.
It really is.

OP is just stirring the pot but this is really happening. The girls' loos at DD's school now have no mirrors. The boys' ones still do...

GoldDuster · 03/03/2023 11:01

Because what's important for girls is that they smile, be beautiful and positive at all times.

What a crock of regressive shit.

The nugget in this article is the bit where they purport that girls who feel negative about themselves are more likely to engage in activities with the opposite sex that they later regret.

This is just another way around getting girls to remain chaste, and obedient.

It's bollocks.

Jimhendersonsrelish · 03/03/2023 11:03

@Nimbostratus100 For the myriad of reasons already mentioned, not good for everyone.

Grumpybutfunny · 03/03/2023 11:03

If they are checking make up they likely have a make up bag with them which shock horror will have a mirror. I wear a full face everyday as I like the way I look in it, I also wash and dry my hair. I'm a registered professional with a degree and multiple post graduate qualification. I don't need to look plain to be successful.

Booooot · 03/03/2023 11:03

So stupid. I didn’t wear makeup at school but I did use mirrors to check my patches of alopecia were covered or to sort my tie out etc. there’s nothing wrong with having a check over of yourself in the mirror whilst washing your hands.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 03/03/2023 11:05

WandaWonder · 03/03/2023 10:33

I wonder how long they last up?

Not long. They will soon be on the floor, blutack removed and squished up in pockets ready to play with.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 03/03/2023 11:06

There’s nothing wrong with mirrors.

‘Body positive’ is so cringe. It’s turned into ‘judge makeup/fitness/clothes/I’m natural so ALL of you should be too’

WandaWonder · 03/03/2023 11:08

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 10:56

many many many hours......

That is even weirder

limitedperiodonly · 03/03/2023 11:08

It all sounds drearily puritanical to me @Nimbostratus100 . Do you take pleasure from that kind of thing?

We didn't have many mirrors when I was growing up. It wasn't because we were part of a weird fundamentalist sect it was just because my parents didn't think it was necessary. There wasn't even one in the bathroom because when my dad tiled it he got so involved he forgot to leave a space on the wall.

There was one in my parents' room and they thought it was good enough because everyone was free to go and look in it - in fact we were encouraged to make sure our hair was tidy and check our school skirt wasn't tucked in our knickers.

From the age of about 13 my sister and I did our make up in it but the light was terrible so we bought a pedestal one with a normal side and a magnifying side that you could move around and angle for the best light. My parents were always nicking it.

We have grown into well-adjusted and assertive women. I firmly believe being about to check you haven't got a bit of spinach in your teeth or a bogey up your nose before an important meeting enhances your confidence. Same goes for smudged mascara.

blebbleb · 03/03/2023 11:10

Talk about weird and controlling. What if you want to check for food in your teeth?

MumOf2workOptions · 03/03/2023 11:13

PortiasBiscuit · 03/03/2023 10:21

Oh for god sake, let them check if they have bloody dinner on their face or if they have smudged their mascara.
Bloody Stupid!
No wonder our kids are so fucked up, the default position is absolutely to assume that they are fucked up, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy!

I agree the world has gone mad with all this shit!

Sushiii · 03/03/2023 11:13

I’d have had more anxiety if there’d been no mirrors at school! I didn’t have any particular hang ups about how I looked but it was more about just checking your hair looked ok, or a spot hadn’t suddenly got bigger, you know, the normal things that people use mirrors for. To not be able to check on my appearance would have made me feel more self conscious.

PortiasBiscuit · 03/03/2023 11:13

Well 90% of the people voting disagree with you, so let’s hope it doesn’t. 😀

many many many hours......

Umm … why?

Jinpix · 03/03/2023 11:14

I used to put contact lenses in at school. Whilst I can do it without a mirror now, I couldn't then. I expect the op is now going to say contact lenses are vanity.

furryfrontbottom · 03/03/2023 11:16

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 10:43

I think a lot of posters on here have fallen into the make up tyranny trap! Some people might struggle not to be able to look in a mirror for a few hours.

Why would you want to pass that repression on to your children? surely you would want them to grow up free of all that

I'd want my (hypothetical) children to grow up free of sinister mind control experiments of any kind.

woodhill · 03/03/2023 11:17

Fgs let them have a mirror

LlynTegid · 03/03/2023 11:17

Checking a tie is straight where you wear one. Or trousers are properly fitted after going to the toilet.
