Cheapskates on Vinted

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/03/2023 21:33

I'm having a (quite protracted) clear out and have been listing stuff on Vinted.

I listed a pair of brand new unworn leather slides, which I bought from Marks and Spencer for £39.50, for £10.

I've had lots of favourites and four people asking if I'd sell for £6. It's already a bloody bargain!

I don't mind people making an offer. It's the ones who message repeatedly in a very short space of time without waiting for me to reply. Today in the space of 20 mins I've had one potential buyer message me 6 times including a message saying "I won't give up" before I'd even had a chance to respond to the 1st message.

I've just started using Vinted and I'm also shocked at the cheapskates. I listed a dress for a fiver and 2 people offered me £3. It cost about £40 but it's 4 years old. I realise now you should post higher so people can make an offer. Seems daft to me on a £5 dress, I would rather give it to a charity shop.

That's what I don't understand, quibbling about two quid! And talking about postage bumping it up - you'd pay that buying online, or if shopping in store or even a charity shop you'd pay parking, petrol, bus fares etc.

Most people will offer unless it's a particular item they've been looking for. I'll always offer if it's been on for months, similarly I'll always accept offers on things I've had for months. It's just how vinted is, you can always write in the description "no offers please"

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 02/03/2023 22:48

Honestly, it's not like everyone is selling some handmade unique pieces you spent time making 😂 Of course people will try to get the lowest price possible or think "yeah that's worth a tenner, but not 15 so need to bring it down to cover postage"

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/03/2023 22:52

I've just seen an Oh Polly swimsuit listed, new with tags and the photos show the seller wearing it AT A FOAM PARTY

But it's new with tags apparently Grin

cocksstrideintheevening · 02/03/2023 22:53

I've sold £80 worth this week, I aways list for a couple of £ over what is reasonable and then accept the offers. Be realistic though, you'd never get £10 at a boot sale for the Vinted is a an online boot sale plus the buyer buys postage and protection so your £10 is nearer £15. Stock them in at £8 they'll probably go.

Jakadaal · 02/03/2023 22:55

I'm pleased you have posted OP as I feel
Exactly the same ! Everytime I put something up people immediately offer a lower price. Like you I am not asking ridiculous prices and now as someone else suggested I am posting with inflated prices.

I like Vinted for the speed of it compared to EBay but if something is posted for £5 eg a Zara top then that's a realistic price and you will end up paying more in postage Hmm

NoInvitesEver · 02/03/2023 22:55

@anythingbutlillies No definitely not gold shoes, it was a dress. Despatched same day she paid but I never got the money as the item came back to me. Had auto messages saying it was waiting for buyer to collect then it came back to me. I didn't get paid but I got the dress back.

wonderofu · 02/03/2023 22:57

If you don't ask you don't get! Better to ask and try your luck! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Highdaysandholidays1 · 02/03/2023 23:01

you don't make heaps of money on Vinted with things like shoes/higher end items, because people are looking for a bargain and also if they are anything like me, they don't want to pay £15 (£10 item, plus insurance, plus postage) for something that may not fit. I don't mind taking a chance on a cheaper item but don't want to do that with shoes/coats even if branded. Things apparently sell higher price on eBay but I'm not sure they shift as quickly.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 02/03/2023 23:02

Also, if you only just listed the item, hold on. Lots of likes and then one person jumping in is quite common. I wouldn't take the first or second offer yet. If you want £10, wait it out and next time list it for a bit higher.

Alargeoneplease89 · 02/03/2023 23:05

As others said list higher then you want that way when you get an offer, it's sometimes higher then you wanted.

Or see it from the perspective of, you aren't wearing it, so your quids in anyway.

fyn · 02/03/2023 23:20

I never get offers but I also price competitively to start with and offer bundle discounts. I’ve sold about £100 of baby clothes in the last two weeks. Nearly all of it was second hand to start with so in some cases I’ve made a little bit of money on top of what I’ve sold.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 03/03/2023 08:36

You have to remember there are sales all the time so you can easily pick up items at half price at the shops BNWT and retain the right to return if it does not fit or you change your mind...so by ordering on vinted the buyer is taking a risk...I always post and happy to accept a lot less if it's something I won't use and will be just gathering dust...I used to give to charities but I am not too keen now that I know most of the profits go to pay CEO's and the likes instead of actually helping people in need.

LonelyBones · 03/03/2023 09:13

Protection and postage should be kept in mind when you are both buyer and seller. I see so many Primark tops and etc that are priced so much, inc p&p, that its same for me to go to the actual store and buy new.
Vinted is great though, and you neednt be offended with offers, just refuse and wait for someone else to buy.

Gillyyy · 03/03/2023 09:25

Following your example, If I don’t want to accept a low offer, I say I’ve got someone else interested but could do £9 if that works for you?

I think sometimes people like to just get something off!

furryfrontbottom · 03/03/2023 09:51

It's not just about the original value, it's about the time and effort you invest in listing the thing, answering enquiries, packing and posting it. Pick a figure below which it's simply not worth your while to go, and stick to it.

amylou8 · 03/03/2023 09:59

I agree it's daft sometimes. I put some stuff on fo £2 and was getting £1.20 offers. I think you should be able to turn the offer function off. I always list everything for about 30% more than I want for it now. If it's not sold after a week then I reduce it to what I actually want. Seems a bit of a waste of everyone's time though, I'd rather just list if for the sale price in the first place.

yousilvertongueddevilyou · 03/03/2023 11:20

Just decline. I sell for £20-£30 an item on there. I list them for more and accept the inevitable offer of a fiver less every time. I've made £200 in two months.

Namechangehereandnow · 03/03/2023 11:31

JMSA · 02/03/2023 22:07

I usually offer a couple of quid less, but nothing pisstakey. What confuses me, is the seller declining my offer but the item has been up there for weeks or even months. Of course they're entitled to decline, but why not send me a counteroffer?!

Well the seller could be as stupid as me 😳 I’ve sold on Vinted for well over a year, didn’t know I can send an offer in response to a buyers offer 😳 I’ve seen the ‘make an offer’ button and thought, “eh, why on earth would I make an offer to myself for my own item?! 😳😳😳 mortifyingly stupid! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ My dd recently told me what this actually means 😳😳😆😆 I’m a very sensible, knowledgeable person! In my defence (I mean, there’s really not a defence for this level of stupidity!) .. why don’t they call it ‘make a counteroffer’ button??!

I don't get this. Just list it and decline offers that are too low. That's what I do and it's fine. The people who know it's a bargain buy it. It's just adding the offer culture you say annoys you!

OhmygodDont · 03/03/2023 13:43

I had someone make an offer this week. So I accepted it then they tried to offer even less because postage. Like nope. Tbh I don’t make offers on there and have my stuff set to bundle prices for discounts if you buy more than one thing. Only ever had two offers everyone else has paid the asking price.

dontstereotype · 03/03/2023 13:46

If I'm selling things online I Witt something among the lines of:

"sorry no offers. This is the lowest price I am prepared to sell for"

Thinkbiglittleone · 03/03/2023 13:58

I don't mind getting offers, at the end of the day it's 2nd hand gear, I am selling stuff I don't want anyone. I would have to drive, park etc to drop it off at a charity shop. It's easier for me to accept a few quid less and know someone is re using my stuff and enjoying it.

I think of offers annoy you, as it's the nature of the beast, maybe use eBay instead as a "buy it now" or find a platform that is geared up around encouraging offers or state in the description "no offers will be accepted"
