YABU. It won’t work. You need to fix the issues that have caused this, not try to stick a literal band aid over it.

DuvetDownn · 02/03/2023 17:00

It could work with some counselling as well if you’re prepared to work at it.

UnctuousUnicorns · 02/03/2023 17:00

You'd be better off posting in the Weight Loss forum, OP. More posters with experience there.

Dinoswearunderpants · 02/03/2023 17:01

You're overweight because you consume more calories than you burn. Eat less, exercise more. Surgery is a lazy solution.

I understand it is hard but it's a long journey. Just be patience and keep moving forward.

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 02/03/2023 17:04

You need to address the overeating. I am not sure which gastric surgery my neighbour (a whilr ago) had but she managed to lose a lot but within couple of years add a lot again.

Have you had therapy for the trauma? Because I don't think the surgery will help without it

I think it could work. You have to stick to a very punishing diet for months before to shrink your liver so that is a good prep. You physically can not eat normally ever again afterwards. There is no choices, it's physically impossible to eat a normal meal ever again so it does work for the vast majority as nearly everyone has a bad relationship with food beforehand. Unless you melt chocolate to pour it into you, or drink alchol you will not be able to get enough calories in or keep them down to remain 20 stone. Really look into side effects as they are very real ( like bile dumping and being sick if you eat more than a side plate of food). But it works. So why should you be the exception that fails? Very negative response.

hairyunicorn · 02/03/2023 17:07

I had a gastric band at 18 stone. Lost 7.5 stone and kepted it off for over 10 years. I then decided for many reasons to remove the band and go for a gastric sleeve and i could not be happier.

The band works (as long as you work with it) and can be adjusted so you find your sweet spot, but it takes a while to get too and even the slightest over-eating has you vomiting like crazy.

I much prefer the gastric sleeve, much more gentle and i basically get full after 1/2 a portion of food, which is what i wanted. The restriction is there but not as harsh as the band. If i had to do it all over again i would def. go for the sleeve.

What made you decide on the band over the sleeve?

Bypass is the norm now. You can't reverse it so not really possible with that to go back to normal. Sleeve maybe what your neighbour had I wonder?

Swingwhenyourewinning · 02/03/2023 17:10

The band is no longer recommended i had the sleeve and it’s the best thing I ever done xx

Cherrysoup · 02/03/2023 17:11

Bands aren’t used much these days. For information from people who have been through the process, join this group: www.facebook.com/groups/1523401171294285?locale=en_GB

Densol57 · 02/03/2023 17:16

Definitely not a band. I had a sleeve ( paid privately ) and lost 12 stone. Im healthier and have more energy than any of my friends.

YANBU - use whatever tool you need to make your life better and live longer - good luck and fuck what any of the naysayers say. Its your life not theirs x

thisisasurvivor · 02/03/2023 17:17

I don't think she had bypass. She just said gastric surgery and I didn't want to dig in.

BotherThat · 02/03/2023 17:18

Hello! I have a gastric band and it’s not the ‘lazy’ option. It’s a much needed tool to help me manage my complex relationship with food.

I’ve also had therapy, but sometimes, when already obese, counselling alone can take a good amount of time to untangle and process the root cause of overeating, and to be blunt, by the time you’ve reached 20 stone (not judging, I wasn’t far off that myself) your health has become a ticking time bomb.

It’s not easy. Really not easy, but it can help. I opted for the band over the sleeve because of cost and the option to reverse if needs be. I think most people go for the sleeve or bypass though and I may consider this in future but it’s not right for me at the moment.

You may also want to consider weight loss injections first? They are obviously costly, but not as drastic as surgery. I use them occasionally when I feel myself sliding back in to bad habits.

I wish you luck, op whatever you decide.

bellac11 · 02/03/2023 17:18

You should post this in the weight loss chat. You'll get the normal uninformed people on threads like this otherwise.

I particularly like the 'its the lazy way to do it', clearly has no clue what it involves

However bands are not thought to be the most efficient now, sleeves or bypasses. Also have you really looked into bands, they are hard work to maintain, back and forth for refills or loosening up etc.

You have to weigh up the balance of your current obesity and the lifestyle changes that the surgery will bring.

Being overweight is about far more than calories in/calories out and bariatric surgery is certainly not the lazy option. It is a tool to help with weight loss. You still have to work hard. OP, I think surgery could be an option but l understand that gastric bands are not done very often these days and that gastric bypasses or sleeves are more favoured for long term results.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/03/2023 17:59

From what I understand you still have to diet when you have the surgery so I think I'd rather diet conventionally and eat normally. I've read awful things about vitamin deficiencies and other problems. I think it's safe to say there isn't a quick fix whatever the method.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 02/03/2023 18:00

YABU, but because gastric bands have a high failure rate. Look at the sleeve or newer balloon

Someo · 02/03/2023 18:01

Opt for bypass or sleeve if going to go ahead with WLS. I've had WLS and lost 8.5st. It's been worth every penny.

It is not an easy way out. You will need to be prepared to face some battles. Some physically, some mentally.

It is the best thing I've ever done.

thisisasurvivor · 02/03/2023 18:03

Ahhh fab info
So a sleeve instead??!

OP posts:
Whatthediddlyfeck · 02/03/2023 18:04

@Someo Im glad it’s been successful for you, I’ve lost over 14 stones with a sleeve-best thing I’ve ever done

Someo · 02/03/2023 18:06

A sleeve or a bypass are for go to ops now though as someone mentioned there's also the balloon.

The sleeve and bypass are permanent solutions and cannot be reversed. Well I think the bypass can but I believe only in truly exceptional circumstances.

I'd recommend reading the book Why We Eat Too Much as well. It's really informative and goes on to explain why weight isn't JUST cals in and cals out. It goes quite a bit deeper than that. It is a complex issue.

Whyisitsososohard · 02/03/2023 18:07

I've had a sleeve. Definitely don't get a band. They have. A high complication rate. If definitely look at a sleeve or bypass. But it's a massive thing. So you need to do tons of research. But not unreasonable to consider it. People who tell you it's cheating or to do it on your own often have little experience of being fat.
