To worry about Tik tok trend protests-Schools

Indigoshift · 01/03/2023 16:44

I know school tends have happened for years and years eg ' being tangoed'.

But these school protests are ridiculous.
I know someone posted the other day about a school with ridiculous rules but now it's happening all over the country just because of tik tok trends.

It has happened at my husbands school and today at mine. It was instigated by the lower years it had potential for someone to be crushed on the stairs. Luckily it was dispersed in 5 minutes. Proud that the y11 students told them that they were embarrassing and the school isn't that bad

Where does it end? A protest with nothing to protest about.

Hasn’t happened at my school yet but we are hearing rumblings, hopefully it’s just talk and it’ll pass. I must admit it’s been playing on my mind - I’m too old and tired to be dealing with added issue in my day to day school life.

Nimbostratus100 · 01/03/2023 17:14

we did this, 50 years ago....

can't even remember why

Swalewhale · 01/03/2023 17:23

They are revolting children

Balloontea · 01/03/2023 17:26

Social media brings out a lot of pathetic and attention seeking behaviour in pursuit of likes. Fair play for the year 11s pointing out how sad and cringe it is.

Parky04 · 01/03/2023 17:26

We had a big protest in the 80s when the boys were banned from wearing white socks!

immergeradeaus · 01/03/2023 17:28

Goodness, I remember trying to start a revolution when I was in Year 10. It was on the grounds that everything was sooooooo unfair. In the end, the people didn't rise, because we were watching a video in the history lesson, then we had PE, and frankly the PE teachers were scary because they could make you run laps of the field. By period three we'd run out of revolutionary fury.

LlynTegid · 01/03/2023 17:42

Concerned yes, worried seems over the top to me. Worth asking the school if they have a plan to deal with such things. Social media no doubtless fuelling things, won't be a protest about something important such as the thousands of children who go hungry in school holidays.

Wonnle · 01/03/2023 17:44

Tik Tok needs taking out of the game I think , it's toxic .

It's also backed by the Chinese government and god knows what data they harvest from anyone who uses it

catsonahottinroof · 01/03/2023 17:48

I think it's good that children are protesting for things like not being able to go to the toilet during lessons and toilets being locked, also the girls being made to line up and have their skirts measured by a male teacher. It's not so good if others are jumping on the bandwagon when they have nothing to really protest about.

It was unnnerving being at the centre of it. Even just for 5 minutes.

There are times when I really wish Mumsnet had a like button.

Did you wear red socks for the protest?

The problem with allowing kids to go to the toilet in lessons is that they miss learning, disrupt others on their way out/in, use it as an opportunity to use their phones/vape/skive. I know it isn't all kids, but I can virtually guarantee the only ones who ask to use the toilet in lessons are the ones want to mess around.
The others follow the rules and go at break/lunch/between lessons.

100% this. I'm tired of people burying their heads in the sand about this. I think the capacity for harm from all SM is totally underestimated but ffs the Chinese don't even allow their own citizens to use it while gleefully causing conflict in other societies. Tiktok is uniquely poisonous because of the grip it has on teenagers.

GoodChat · 01/03/2023 18:16

We protested a couple of times at school because the first one worked.

If you don't want it on tik tok make firmer rules around phones.

Who make firmer rules around phones?

Teachers/schools @Indigoshift

WhoWants2Know · 01/03/2023 19:37

Schools already have rules about phone usage 🤣.

Kids who are protesting are already breaking the rules, so I don't think they're shy about filming and posting it.

Teachers/schools @Indigoshift

But we have a no phones rule and it still happened. They can watch Tik tik out of school.

Have any of you actually used TikTok? I mean have an account and let the algorithm very quickly work out what you like.

The point of TikTok is that it's totally different for every user - depending on what they watch/swipe past.

My TikTok is full of horses, dogs and cooking tips.

BigMandysBookClub · 01/03/2023 20:27

I would love these algorithms to get scrambled one day. Kids end up getting clips on fixing tractors, fake influencers getting signposted to conspiracy theorists and Andrew Tate watchers end up with clips from Sex and the City or Bottom (would be like looking in a mirror for some of his watchers).

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 01/03/2023 20:44

Be glad it's just a protest, my school used to go on whole school riots around the area or to other schools for fights.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/03/2023 21:05

Schools should be provided with water cannon.

Devoutspoken · 01/03/2023 21:48

Or just let kids use the toilets
