To wonder why nothing can ever just be nice?

My fiancé and I have been having a really though time recently however the main thing causing the tough time was over at the end of January and we have been looking forward to getting our lives back, reconnecting and treating ours selves.

We decided to treat ourself to a new bathroom as the old one was the original from the 90s. Having it installed was horrible and disruptive as building work is but the finished result was beautiful and we were really happy.

Until this evening we noticed it has started leaking into the living room below! I could weep that this treat to get us through a shitty time is now turning into such a ball ache and ruining our decor downstairs…which will be another ball ache to rectify.

Is nothing ever JUST nice?

Currently feels like I have spent £7.5k we don’t really have to have a bathroom that wasn’t leaking, leak 😭

Oh god that's so shit. I've had stuff like that happen before and you could just bloody cry! First thing, are you covered for all this on insurance?

We are covered by insurance but we had the bathroom installed through wickes who do a 2 year guarantee on all the works so I’m expecting them to come out and fix it

Exactly the same thing happened to us. Dream bathroom, burst pipe because plumber used cheap joints and a flood downstairs just a couple if weeks after installation. Needless to say it happened late at night on a weekend when DH was away. I didn’t shower for four days.
I totally feel you Flowers

It's rubbish isn't it. We had a new roof which caused our boiler flue to be a bit wonky, we didn't realise but there was a small leak running down the flue which corroded it. It was so old we couldn't replace it as they didn't make them anymore so we got a new boiler. The pressure in the new boiler was so good that it burst a historical pipe repair (from 15yrs+ before, when we didn't own the house) and flooded our bathroom and the ceiling in the hall had to come down. There was asbestos in the ceiling and the removal and associated plastic tent took all the paint off our newly decorated walls and woodwork on the stairs.

It was all fixed eventually but I didn't walk past that ceiling without staring at it for water marks ever again 😅 Then covid happened and we moved! Wish I'd left the old boiler in and saved 3.5k 🙄

CosyScentedCandles · 28/02/2023 21:03

Thank you for the sympathy, it’s been such a shit time recently and I was starting to feel better but having agg to deal with has put me right back in the bad place and my resilience for dealing with this is extremely low.

I have WhatsApped the people who did the installation but he hasn’t read it yet.

The worst part is that we suspected a leak last week but when they came back they said that because it was dry and they had spilled a lot of water in that place it was probably because of that. One week later that is clearly not the case!

Take your pick from:

Dont you know there is a war on
Cost of Living crisis
First world problem
You're lucky to have a bathroom (even if it is now ensuite to your living room)

I do think there is a handful of posters who go round voting the opposite way to the vast majority of posters.

What a horrible thing to happen.

I hope it's fixed quickly and easily and you can get on with enjoying your home

bellylaughsalldaylong · 01/03/2023 06:27

That’s shit op.

I’ve got a bathroom that’s had numerous leaks and it’s draining (pardon the pun!)

mrsnoodle55 · 01/03/2023 06:47

Totally sympathise.

I sold my caravan last year to fund our new bathroom, which we desperately needed.

The whole thing has been one disaster after another. 12 months on I’ve finally admitted defeat after the company blame the fitters (who were rubbish), who blame the company, but I just can’t face the stress anymore so I’ve dropped it.

Damaged water tanks (extra £2k to fix), toilet leaks, shocking grout, uneven tiling, chipped sink, leak due to poor grouting…. The list goes on.

I’ve a garage full of some replacement stuff I’ve finally managed to get from the shoddy company, but no money left to get someone decent in to rip it all out and start again.

So yes- my sympathies. Why can’t things just be done well and nice.

LolaMoon · 01/03/2023 06:53

I completely agree and empathise. We had an extension built on our house a few years ago- went through 6 (I kid you not) different builders because they all started then seemed to disappear half way through despite them being recommended on check a trade and us paying them regularly for work done etc. It was a nightmare and dragged on for over a year. It was so bad its made me never ever want to have serious work done ever again. Thankfully the house looks amazing now but we have also had minor things go wrong which should have been installed properly from the beginning. I still shudder when I think back to that year.

WonderingWanda · 01/03/2023 06:56

The joys of being a homeowner op. It's frustrating when things like this happened but as you've mentioned you have a guarantee and insurance so it's not too big a deal and won't take long to fix up. Once the lounge ceiling is dry you can paint over it with some sort of stain block then your usual paint. I hope all your other stresses sort themselves out soon.

Vegrocks · 01/03/2023 07:01

Speak for yourself op

Loads of stuff is “just nice” in my life!!

BibbleandSqwauk · 01/03/2023 07:04

Don't worry op..there's a poster on the thread about shoddy tradespeople who reckons she's never had a bad one and it's only if you treat them badly that they screw up, don't communicate and are rude, despite dozens of posts from perfectly reasonable sounding people explaining how they've been let down. It's v frustrating..I always think, "well surely they'd want their own house straight / watertight / safe / undamaged etc, so why do they think that their clients will be ok with it?

CosyScentedCandles · 01/03/2023 07:23

@BibbleandSqwauk the plumber was actually super nice and very professional (chap who did the tiling and plastering wasn’t great mind you). The owner of the business is coming round this morning to take a look. My fiancé has had a little poke around and thinks it is not sealed properly - I would love for it just to be that and not bloody plumbing 😩😩

OP posts:
CosyScentedCandles · 01/03/2023 07:25

@mrsnoodle55 thats horrendous. Dealing with it all takes so much energy I find it all consuming when there is house crap to deal with.

Our boiler is intermittently leaking water as well (unrelated) but I’ve just stuck a Tupperware under that for the the last few weeks because I haven’t got the space to get it dealt with after the first gas engineer we had round said he couldn’t find where it was coming from but it was all perfectly safe 😮‍💨

Tekkentime · 01/03/2023 07:33

Make sure you properly air it out, you do not want any mould. It wrecks your mental and physical health.

CosyScentedCandles · 01/03/2023 12:58

Chap came out very promptly this morning. Thankfully it’s only a problem with the waste pipe so only when it is being used. He has replaced a piece of pipe and redone some of the sealant. Hopefully that is the end of it but we have to monitor it for a few days

it was a thread about plumbing so even though very frustrating… I didn’t think I needed to put my velvet gloves on!

You didn’t start the thread either. What’s your point?

Aprilx · 01/03/2023 13:29

Same thing happened to me when I had a bathroom done. In fact the leak brought the kitchen ceiling down. But it can be fixed, in a few weeks it will be as good as new and behind you. My incident happened in 2008, it was quickly out right and there has been no further problems.

Aprilx · 01/03/2023 13:30

*put right

butterflyrabbit · 01/03/2023 13:32

We had a shower that leaked down below that was put in by trusted, friendly builders we knew well. Don't take it personally! I think he cursed himself (and apologised) for having inadvertently broken the joint thing. It didn't show up for a while either. It is a massive pain but renovations are like that.... hope it gets fixed.
