Walking across someone's front grass is not acceptable?

I've always considered that you use a path when walking towards someone's house, I share a front garden with my neighbour so we have half the grass each.

My neighbour and their guests repeatedly walk across our side of the grass to get next door instead of taking an extra 5 seconds to follow the pathway!

Even delivery couriers do it! It's infuriates me! It's so rude. Is it just that others think it's fine?! I am I the unreasonable one to think it's not on?

I just find it so rude to walk across someone's property because you can't be bothered to take the pathway. Especially during spring when I've refilled patches with grass seed and trying to get the lawn looking it's best and someone tramples all over it Angry

AIBU? Or are they?! Grin

YANBU

I think it’s rude. I mean, it’s not the crime of the century but it just shows a lack of respect. You don’t walk over other people’s gardens.

Maybe put a cross there? 🪦

BollocksToThem · 28/02/2023 15:22

Say something, it's bloody rude

TrombonesAreNotBones · 28/02/2023 15:22

You need to get a little picket fence or plant berberis or something?

TrombonesAreNotBones · 28/02/2023 15:22

Maybe dig an elephant trap?

Lyricallie · 28/02/2023 15:23

Personally I don’t really mind. Our driveway gates are always open so the posties cut across. Hardly a big deal.

mamabear715 · 28/02/2023 15:23

It would annoy me too. I'd be putting tubs of plants in the way.

TrombonesAreNotBones · 28/02/2023 15:23

A tethered pig might be successful in deterring corner-cutters?

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 15:24

You need to make it easier to go around than to across. Park up, plant up, put a little fence.

I occasionally deliver leaflets and really appreciate people who have a delivery path across the front to their neighbour's. It saves so much time!

refreshingseahorse · 28/02/2023 15:24

It's really annoying. We got a fence, it was very much worth the ££

gobbleguts · 28/02/2023 15:29

@QueenOfThorns I love that idea Grin

I sort of get delivery drivers doing it to cut corners but not the people who live next door and know I can clearly see them being a lazy arse and walking over my side Hmm the plan is to completely remove the grass and block pave it so it will be a parking space so that should put an end to is as we will separate our side with a low wall. If I try to put any separation into the grass now I imagine it will look really odd as it's one big piece of grass from our side to theirs.

I could ask them to stop but it will probably make things a bit awkward because they will likely think I am over reacting and we're otherwise friendly.

But you don't need to block the middle, just your edge.

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 15:32

Your outer edge. By the time they walk past that, they may as well go all the way.

Mind perhaps I've misunderstood as there's NO DIAGRAM!

QuertyGirl · 28/02/2023 15:34

Get a fence?

Some bushes?

Move the path?

We need a diagram

Oldraver · 28/02/2023 15:38

Yep we have had this for the last few years, probably because our garden may look a little sruffy and isnt your usual manicured lawns. I once asked the postie why, and he said it saved time/was a shortcut. I asked him if he was then going to march through the small hedges two of my neighbours have around their, larger than mine gardens and he couldn't answer

For a while we have a makeshift mesh fence while the plants grew but we van only take it out where there are no gaps

One thing that did stop this was threading the lights that are on copper wire round the edge...we have had a few delivery people get tangled uo in it. Though Ive noticed the mesh at the side of the househas been pushed over

TheySeeMeRowling · 28/02/2023 15:41

What do they say when you challenge them on it?

DrManhattan · 28/02/2023 15:41

I feel your pain. I have this all the time and I do tell the delivery people not to do it and the post man doesn't do it anymore. It might be trivial put I don't like having my grass and flowers trampled.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 28/02/2023 15:46

I challenged a delivery driver who climbed through a hedge to get from next door to
us he just shrugged. On the other side our neighbours never put in a foot path to their front door; no need - they just walk through our front garden 😡 shows entitlement but I never got round to
sorting out a wall and it’s been 30 years now!

mymeatballsmymeatballs · 28/02/2023 15:57

Yeah, it's rude. My 4 year old knows not to do it because I've taught him it's rude so you'd think adults would know.

Bunnyishotandcross · 28/02/2023 15:59

Get a cheery Keep Off The Grass sign. Or sprinklers.

stripedsox · 28/02/2023 16:08

A cheery 'Get the fuck off of MY gras' sign would be better 😄

stripedsox · 28/02/2023 16:09

Ffs GRASS !

Knitterofcrap · 28/02/2023 16:10

My neighbours visitors used to do this. I just knocked when they had done it and explained that it bothered me and asked nicely if they could use the path.

All sorted, they didn’t do it again. However, I appreciate your neighbours might not be as nice…

WFHbore2023 · 28/02/2023 16:14

Yup, YANBU

It pisses me off when people cut across my driveway, and have looked at ways to fence it off, but it would make it difficult for the people that live behind us to get to their drive.
