Tradesman ate my crisps - do I bring it up?

We are currently renovating a property before moving in. We have all of our furniture there but are staying elsewhere. The windows are currently being renovated. When I went in to see the progress I noticed my multipack of crisps was empty and there were several empty packets of crisps strewn in different rooms.

AIBU to raise this with the lead tradesman?

I have left quite a bit a food there as we are there most days doing DIY/decorating but haven't been there while the windows are being renovated.

My partner says there isn't any point in raising it. Nothing will come out of it.

When we had our kitchen done. I always made sure there was a few packets of biscuits, squash and tea and coffee for the builders.

MyStarBoy · 28/02/2023 17:19

YANBU
The whole scenario is extremely disrespectful.

I asked my DH (builder) his opinion and let's just say he would have slaughtered them.

He's had similar happen to him with tools/food being taken in the past, and he's made it crystal clear of consequences, to put a stop to it.

First world problems or what.

Have a word of it maked you feel better.

PrincessConstance · 28/02/2023 17:24

Deduct the crisps off the bill at the end.

Let them eat crisps, Marie Antoinette was quoted just before she lost her life due to an angry mob 😅

Surely some crisps are worth it to make his day A-okay ♥️♥️♥️

I don’t think the issue is the crisps, it takes seconds to throw rubbish in the bin, they don’t need to dump stuff on the floor (including your clothes). Overall I wouldn’t be annoyed about this but I would monitor their work to see if they’re shoddy in other areas.

To the guillotine with the builders.

Thank you all. I clearly need to work on my tradesman manners. I know what to leave out for them next time.

I need to chill out a bit Wink

You do sound nice, OP. I'd have been a bit grumpy and then a bit more grumpy for being told I was being unreasonable!

MyStarBoy · 28/02/2023 17:41

@Disneygirl37

What you do is very good and very standard.

But leaving rubbish strewn around and overalls dumped and left on the floor is extremely ignorant and bad mannered, and if I had builders like this, I would definitely be having a polite but direct word.

TBH it would personally make me question their standard of work, if they were so thick and ignorant about something so basic.

maddy68 · 28/02/2023 17:41

I usually leave crisps , biscuits tea coffee etc out for tradesmen so I assume they thought you left them for them

MoreSleepPleasee · 28/02/2023 17:45

If they have the nerve to leave your belongings on the floor and eat your food I wonder what else they've been doing. Yanbu op you should raise it. It's rude. They didn't just eat your food they left the rubbish everywhere. Shows no respect.

Tumbleweed101 · 28/02/2023 17:46

If it wasn't obviously left for them they probably shouldn't have touched them. However when we had a lot of work done on our house I left out tea/coffee, Milk, biscuits and other snacks like that. I've found that this can sometimes buy an extra from them if you have been good to them. We got an extra full paint tin left recently because we left them a few pints beer at the end of a job with instructions on how to best paint the new plaster.

Mrsgreen100 · 28/02/2023 17:52

Cheeky effers , I run building sites really hate these kind or twits it’s like a dog peeing on a tree marking his territory.
if he is doing a good job keep quite sounds like a twat to me personally I think it’s unacceptable
your partner should step up and say hey mate
you shifted my crisps ?
im hungry how and I am brewing up u fancy a tea

Vinomummyinlockdown · 28/02/2023 17:53

After a house extension that took a year rather than quoted 6 months we must’ve spent at least £500 on coffees, bacon butties, ice creams and juices for all our builders. Of course these items were handed to them they didn’t just take them but I do think re the crisps you need to forget it / hide things / give them an occasional treat. They all seem to love leaving rubbish around and dumping stuff in dust! 🫤

Bib1234 · 28/02/2023 17:54

It would really annoy me but I wouldn’t say anything.
the leaving the rubbish all over the place would really annoy me too!

JillinSwindon · 28/02/2023 17:54

Or rather than raising it as a complaint, as someone else says, keep it light, for the sake of keeping on good terms with them. Bring them a waste bin and say 'Next time you borrow my crisps could you use this, please...hah hah...'

bellylaughsalldaylong · 28/02/2023 17:54

Cherrysoup · 28/02/2023 12:54

Of course raise it! They are stealing what is not theirs. I remember a plumber scoffing my grapes that I'd bought as a treat when I was first working and broke. I was appalled.

Stealing? Really?

Walkaround · 28/02/2023 17:55

It’s the total lack of respect for extremely basic standards of behaviour that would get me. If you’re the sort of person who is happy to eat other people’s food when it clearly has not been left out for you (unless you also wear a nappy, so might have thought it possible it was intended for you…); and then chuck the packets and other people’s clothes on a dirty floor, then I would worry you were also the sort of slob who had fuck all professional standards generally and who might well be doing a bodged job of the work you were paid for, and fly tipping anything you actually bothered to take away with you.

Is it just because most builders are men that such revolting standards of behaviour in someone else’s home are tolerated?

Niceeyes · 28/02/2023 17:55

Just leave it….he may have been starving. What are you expecting? A new multipack? 😂

This maybe the most dramatic yet. 😂

Tradesmen are priceless these days. I'd be buying him more crisps and also treating to lunch, and a pack of coke, if he's doing a good job.

100% correct. I also supplied endless cold drinks and ice lollies to our landscapers when the weather was boiling last summer. They literally did anything I asked of them, nothing was too much trouble. Being nice goes a long way and people will work harder if they perceive they are being looked after.

GeorgeA12 · 28/02/2023 17:57

This post had me all in a Quaver and got me jumping through Hula Hoops. Good job he didnt take the rest of your Nik Naks, its a Golden Wonder he didnt!

To be honest it sounds like he is a bit of a Space Raider. I mean Wotsit all coming too? Next time I would Frisp him before he leaves. Sounds like you are in a bit of a Frazzle with it all so I would recommend heading out with some Skips and going to a Disco :-).

I’d be pissed off. It’s the assumption for me, it’s just plain rude.
