AIBU for thinking someone in our family should have been called to serve on a jury by now?

I've never been called and nor have any of my equally middle-aged siblings or our grown-up children or our parents.

I am not sure I'd like it - but feel it is something that should have happened by now. Is it rare?

I was called in my 30's, deferred once. I found it fascinating. DH was called a couple of years after me but the case ended up being cancelled and, much to his disappointment, he was excused.

clairelip · 27/02/2023 23:24

I'd love to do it but never been called, my mother in law was called 10 times before she was 60. Just luck of the drawer( she always wins a prize at any raffle she enters as well)

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/02/2023 23:27

Nobody in my birth family has ever been called to do it. DP has been asked twice but wriggled out of it both times.

My friend's 18yo has done it!

snowtrees · 27/02/2023 23:32

No one in my family has been called but I see jury's in my job. It's mainly a bit dull. But the odd case is horrific

Interestingly different in the two countries!

I have been unable to find definitive reasons for such a difference. A Scottish jury is 15 compared to 12 in England, but this would not account for it all. Crime rates are broadly similar. I'm far from expert in the court systems, but I suspect some of it is that Sheriffs Courts in Scotland may take cases with juries for lesser offences that might be dealt with by magistrates in England (where, if the sentencing limits will not be exceeded, the accused can elect not to go to Crown Court), but again this wouldn't account for such a big difference.

eurochick · 28/02/2023 03:34

I was called twice in five years. I served the first time but was excused the second as it fell during some exams. I don't think anyone else in my family has ever been called.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 28/02/2023 03:48

I was called up in my 20s, and was lucky enough to get a trial in Number One court in the Old Bailey. It was a fascinating case involving a bank robbery, and as it was the accused's third strike, we sent him down for life. I doubt that I'd get such an interesting case again, although I am in a different country now so could easily get called up again.

I guess that there is a cut-off age so perhaps I'll never be asked.
(My parents are into their 80s now - so probably not ever going to be asked!)

Have we missed out on something?

You have missed absolutely nothing.

I was asked, and spent 8 days sitting on my arse doing fuck all. Didn't hear 1 single case before being released.

The most boring 8 days of my life and hopefully I won't ever have to do it again!

Oblomov23 · 28/02/2023 05:02

Always wanted to be called up and gutted I haven't.

pinkfondu · 28/02/2023 05:48

It's a lottery its exactly how it works

southlondoner02 · 28/02/2023 06:29

I've been called, so has my DP. It's a mix of boring (sitting around waiting for a case) and very interesting. DP's case lasted for weeks which might be inconvenient if you didn't have an understanding employer

nonevernotever · 28/02/2023 06:39

I've received the citation 6 times and served on a jury twice. Both cases had their upsetting parts, but the judge and lawyers were great and did all they could to minimise the impact on jurors, witnesses etc while ensuring that accused was treated fairly. That meant in both cases we spent a lot of time in the jury room while lawyers argued over what was admissible. (If you're called, take a book!) Disclaimer: I live in Edinburgh...

supadupapupascupa · 28/02/2023 08:40

I was called twice at 18. Neither time did it go anywhere so didn't actually do anything

Leakingtoilet · 28/02/2023 19:16

Ledwood85 · 27/02/2023 21:48

Same here, nobody has ever been called from my family.

On a similar note, my mum has held a decent chunk of premium bonds since the 1970s and hasn't won anything in over 50 years.

🤔

Yes premium bonds are so random. I've only had 1k for about 2 years and won £100 last month. Much rather be selected in the premium bonds lottery than the jury duty one!

whyhere · 01/03/2023 08:56

Called twice; attended once; age 65. Most of it was deadly dull.

KimberleyClark · 01/03/2023 08:59

61, retired never been called. DH is 72 and he’s never been called and could ask to be excused now if he was. I honestly wouldn’t mind doing it.

BramblyHedge · 01/03/2023 09:01

No one in my family or husbands family has done it.

TickledCrimson · 01/03/2023 09:02

My brother was but he was excused on medical
grounds (having a stoma) Then my mother in law has been called four times!! Me, never!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/03/2023 09:05

My parents were never called, but both lawyers. Neither dh, I or any of our siblings have been either. I'd love to though!

TheOtherHotstepper · 01/03/2023 09:18

DGM became eligible in the early 1920s, so 100 years ago. DM became eligible in 1949 and DF slightly later. DH and I have been eligible since the1970s and our DC since the early 2000s.None of us have ever been called.

Bumply · 01/03/2023 09:34

I've been called 4 or 5 times. Lost count of the exact count.
I was 8 months pregnant for the first one, so managed to get it cancelled.
I've still never actually made it in to hear a case. Closest I got was my name being put in a bowl, but not selected.
The other times I went in or phoned in and was told not needed.

Youcunnyfunt · 01/03/2023 09:47

My mum and I have each been called 3 times!

I served just once. The last time they called about 50 of us because it was going to be such a long case. I was so relieved the judge excused me after the initial selection phase! It's like a bad version of X Factor or something with the selection process. It would have been minimum of 15 weeks! 😱

Youcunnyfunt · 01/03/2023 09:48

It's either boring or traumatic, you're not missing much. And they compensate you bugger all for missing work.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/03/2023 10:02

I've been called once. I'm 52 and was called when I was 34. My DH , my parents, sister , brother and none of my in laws have ever been called. In fact I don't know anyone else who has ever done it!

Yellowdays · 01/03/2023 10:23

I never have either
