AIBU for thinking someone in our family should have been called to serve on a jury by now?

I've never been called and nor have any of my equally middle-aged siblings or our grown-up children or our parents.

I am not sure I'd like it - but feel it is something that should have happened by now. Is it rare?

Same here

Neither me nor DH have ever been called, or my parents or my brother

I'm not aware that either of DH's siblings has either

BringItBackBruno · 27/02/2023 21:39

I've been called 3 times and got out of it twice (thanks breastfeeding!)

Did it last year and it was absolutely awful - I'm still in counselling. Count your blessings you've managed to avoid it.....

singer15 · 27/02/2023 21:39

As someone who continues to be called repeatedly, it's infuriating. I know it's random, but it's the last thing I need. I served happily enough the first time. I was younger, healthier, and found it interesting. This latest time, it's extremely inconvenient, but I don't think they'll let me out of it. (Going to try, though, on the basis that it will put a strain on my very small business to miss the time from work.)

I feel like I've done my duty and wish they'd just take me off their list and call someone else for a flipping change! DH is another who would like to do it but never gets the chance.

Aheeryb · 27/02/2023 21:41

I had never known anyone be called (family or friends) until I got called last year, although I didn't serve as I wrote back and asked to be excused due to a disability.

Lovegossip · 27/02/2023 21:42

I got called up once in 2008, Dh has been called up 3 times and again will ve doing jury service in mid march

QueefQueen80s · 27/02/2023 21:45

Never, nor my family or any friends 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't get it.

Tuesdayvibes · 27/02/2023 21:46

I've been twice!

LakeTiticaca · 27/02/2023 21:47

I've been called twice. Hubby never. My mum and my sister have both done it

Ledwood85 · 27/02/2023 21:48

Same here, nobody has ever been called from my family.

On a similar note, my mum has held a decent chunk of premium bonds since the 1970s and hasn't won anything in over 50 years.

🤔

Deadringer · 27/02/2023 21:49

I have been called 3 times. I served on a jury the first time, about 30 years ago. Was called again 14 years ago but had a week old baby so was excused, then called again about 3 years ago, but asked to be excused again because I help care for my elderly mum. Hoping not to be called again. I would say out of everyone I know, about half of them have been called at least once.

evilharpy · 27/02/2023 21:50

I've never been called and hope to never have to do it. I don't know how people afford it if their company doesn't cover their salary while they're serving. I just looked it up and maximum loss of earnings you can claim is £64.95 a day if it's more than four hours, and £129.91 if it lasts more than ten days. Childcare has to come out of that.

MrsMaudeLebowski · 27/02/2023 21:50

I've been called three times. The first when I was 18 and wasn't selected. The second time in my early 30s and not enough people had turned up for the clerk to select a jury from. And lastly a couple of years ago just after I had my DC but I was breastfeeding so was excused.
Over the pandemic myself, DM, DB and DBIlL were all called. Although none of us were actually selected. I think living near a large town with a sheriff court and a city with a high court obviously makes it more likely.
And funnily enough I think if you work for the local authority it makes it more likely too- perhaps they know it will be easier to get permission to be away from work for a period of time. I worked in the culture sector and every so often 5 or 6 people in our department would be called within the space of a month. I mentioned it to a friend who worked in the courts because it could hardly be a coincidence. He laughed and just said they weren't doing a good job being subtle about their selection!

ViktoriaPlzen · 27/02/2023 21:50

I got a summons a few years ago but didn’t actually serve on a jury. Entire days of waiting around in a holding room and then being dismissed at around 4pm.
When a jury is formed, 15 names are called out and then 12 are selected; on one occasion I was called, but was not selected for the final 12. The case was someone accused of shoplifting so I doubt it would have been very interesting anyway.

I’m only the second person I know who’s been called. My MIL got a summons in the 90s but got out of it citing childcare reasons - I think it was easier to swerve it in those days.

WhiteFire · 27/02/2023 21:50

My Mum was called in 2020 aged 75, COVID then came so it was postponed, and then she was too old as she turned 76 that year. She would have been 75 and 9 months or something like that.

pinksheetss · 27/02/2023 21:51

I was called at age 23, ended up a high court case and one that sits with me to this day still. Week long case

Iheartmysmart · 27/02/2023 21:53

My sister is the only person I know who has ever been called for jury service. She had an appalling case and had a breakdown afterwards. It took a lot of counselling and medication before she was back to her old self.

purpledalmation · 27/02/2023 21:54

None here either. Gutted.

XenoBitch · 27/02/2023 21:56

My dad has been called. He got his GP to excuse him.

Raindancer411 · 27/02/2023 21:57

I have been called once and would love to do it again 😆

Charliecatpaws · 27/02/2023 21:57

My brother attended just after his 18th birthday, that was 30 years ago. I was called to attend but DS1 was only 6 weeks old so managed to get out of it, I've never been approached since. Neither of my parents were called to attend jury service.

soleilblue · 27/02/2023 21:57

I really don't get all these people who want to do it. I would have gladly swapped. I still remember the cases I was on and that was about 20 years ago. It will haunt me forever I imagine.

Rellywobble · 27/02/2023 21:58

My daughter who is a single mother and a full time student studying her MA was called last year. It really was difficult to arrange two weeks care for her toddler, exams, travel to the town because daughter quite a nervous driver and couldn’t face the bypass .She was not allowed to decline despite all the logistical issues! Any other time she would have embraced it because her MA is very relevant.

Oldraver · 27/02/2023 22:03

My Mum was called 30 odd years ago and no one else since ....until Friday when OH (62) was called

Pleasegodgotosleep · 27/02/2023 22:06

I've been called twice. Both times I was breast feeding a new baby so was excused!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 27/02/2023 22:06

I only know two people who have done jury duty, both colleagues but at different places. None of my family or friends have ever done it. I assumed being called must be very rare.
